Following Tags in Friendica

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Following Tags in Friendica Tonight I made a new contact who shares a love of mine: modeling in 3D. I saw they tagged a post with the hashtag #Blender so I want to follow that hashtag. In the image, you will see what I entered in the global search box and the result. There are actually many other posts underneath their post with the #Blender hashtag in them. I like this result so I click the plus icon under my profile pic to follow that hashtag! #Friendica #tips #tutorials

Categories vs Hashtags in Friendica

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Categories vs Hashtags in Friendica I mentioned using hashtags in another post using the tag cloud. Friendica also has categories you can use as well. This is quite useful in community forum posts to categorize types of posts. How do you find them and what do they look like? The image on the left shows them just above the tag cloud in my status page or wall (found when I click the home icon). Notice the ones without the # in front of the words? Those were created when I gave at least one post a category when it was created. The image on the right shows the different colors for a hashtag versus a category. I will illustrate the usage with a community forum on another post. :) #Friendica #tips #tutorials

So, I like the ability use BBCode on Friendica but it's a pain to type it in manually.

So, I like the ability use BBCode on Friendica but it's a pain to type it in manually. And, I looked for a Firefox addon for that, and found EDIT. It adds an extra sidebar (toggled by CTRL+SHIFT+Y) from which you can BB format selections and do more. Nifty. #Friendica https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/edit/

I've been checking out the federated social networks.

I've been checking out the federated social networks. Here are some links i've found that provide brief observations about Diaspora, Friendica, and Hubzilla with a couple comments about Mastodon. Any observations you'd like to add? 1. My personal Friendica vs Diaspora breakdown so far https://diasp.org/posts/62bdc15037c2013698e1047d7b62795e 2. Is there an overview of social network alternatives to G+ with an emphasis on #GDPR or #PrivacyShield compliance?

Is there an overview of social network alternatives to G+ with an emphasis on #GDPR or #PrivacyShield compliance? I'd very much like to use decentralized alternatives not connected to (global) companies like #diaspora or #friendica or anything from the #fediverse but as far as I can tell each (EU based) server admin becomes responsible in regards of GDPR. All my querys on that regards to such admins either came to no conclusion or to something on the lines of "if a legal dispute over gdpr comes up I will shut down the server immediately" which makes me wonder why I should register at all. Has anyone taken a closer look to such topic or can point me to some external resources?

Friendica and Mononyms

Friendica and Mononyms Just a short note regarding #mononyms on #Friendica (or at least on the #Libranet instance, as I haven't tested others yet): During registration I could not register with a mononym; it expected a First Name and Last Name. From the #Nymwars I remembered the workaround that Google Plus uses, namely substituting the last name with a single period. This fortunately worked, but the period was however visible in the name. Not only that, but it had downcased everything but the first letter. Fortunately both issues can be fixed by editing your name in your profile after registration . Worth noting though that I also had some issues with password generation, possibly because of my attempt to register with a mononym. See more details in my #FirstImpressions post over at https://libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-285b-c88d-113b-b9d656090161 UPDATE the mononym thing is an anti-spam measure and not an actual policy issue, according to Libranet Admin Steffen: https://libranet...

Now that I’ve spent a couple of days with MeWe and Pluspora I feel like I have a good general idea of them.

Now that I’ve spent a couple of days with MeWe and Pluspora I feel like I have a good general idea of them. I’m starting to look at others now so that I can make a proper decision of where I want to land. Today I’m checking out Friendica. It’s a decentralized social network akin to Pluspora, but it has the means of bridging to other social networks. This bridging ability gives it a hub-like feel to me. I am able to link to individual users on Diaspora/Pluspora, Mastodon, and Twitter. I am told that the test posts I made on Friendica appeared on Pluspora but I’m unable to see them. I have been unsuccessful at pushing posts to Twitter. Friendica has a few major issues. For starters there are a ton of options at set-up – enough that I think most casual users will simply walk away. Then it has issues with crashing and it has no mobile to speak of. There’s a junk app on the Play Store and there’s the clunky mobile site and that’s it other than desktop. I’m probably going to pass on Friendic...
