Not sure if this has been shared here yet, but I read each of the 250 descriptions and found it somewhat useful to see what's out there. Though I doubt it's a fully vetted list, it has the link to each platform and is a helpful reference. I also offer a Google Plus Meetup Group on Facebook for any interested. Some observations I posted today about some alternatives I'm busy actively testing - I'm a heavy G+ Collections poster so it is this type of functionality I'm seeking to allow followers to tune into a specific topic I post on vs just profile posts. Originally shared by Danie van der Merwe My observations on alternatives to G+ that I'm testing and especially MeWe Groups It's been about two weeks now (I think) since the announcement about G+ shutting down by August 2019 and I've been testing out MeWe, Minds, Friendica, Diaspora (Pluspora) and Hubzilla quite actively. It's a pity I did not record the exact follower numbers as I did have Diaspora, Friendica and Hubzilla accounts open with some followers but Minds and MeWe were brand new so those are good indicators from a clean slate. I post the same content so there is no difference on that front except that for MeWe, Minds and Diaspora I have to repost manually which is a bit of a pain and I'll mention wh

If you're familiar with an alternative to Google Plus - particularly if it's a relatively obscure service - please consider posting an entry here to tell our members what that alternative is like. It would be great if you could include screenshots , and describe some of the details of how you use the service. Tell us what you like about it. You can certainly talk about flaws, too. If possible, please include the #WhatItsLike hashtag. Thanks!

From the link below: One of the questions for Bill Ottman, the Co-Founder and CEO of Minds: Do you have any advice to share with other entrepreneurs with regards to growing a brand or business? Build something that puts equal attention into your philosophy and principles (eg transparency, privacy, free speech) while simultaneously hitting the human nature nerve (eg. incentives rewards, viral reach). Keep the branding clean and open for evolution. We have made a few small pivots and that wouldn’t be possible without a brand/domain that was too limited in language. Control your tools. Use as much open source software as possible and don’t cave to the convenience temptation for aspects of the product that matter. For instance, everyone who used Facebook login on their apps just decimated their user’s privacy in the recent hack of 50m accounts. Reliance on major tech companies for your infrastructure is high-risk. October 30, 2018 https://masur.com/lawtalk/bill-ottman-co-founder-ceo-of-m

I just found out MeWe just made Pages available.

I just found out MeWe just made Pages available. So I quickly snapped up pages for Gazing Skyward TV, Trinity Aviation Solutions and The Flying Cloud. Come on over and give them a follow if you are interested in aviation. I am feeling pretty confident MeWe is going to be my new platform of choice. Gazing Skyward TV https://mewe.com/p/gazingskywardtv Trinity Aviation Solutions https://mewe.com/p/trinityaviationsolutions The Flying Cloud https://mewe.com/p/theflyingcloud Also don't forget to follow my profile. https://mewe.com/i/johnchvatal If you are over there on MeWe, post links to your profiles in the comments. I want to connect with people who love aviation and are in the field of WordPress web development. I also have an interest in online privacy. So I may be posting about that over there in the future... #avgeek #MeWe #GooglePlusMigration

I have been seeing a lot of social media sites mentioned, and there is no way that I have the time or energy to try them all out myself. So I thought it might be helpful to have some screenshots of various alternatives. This is the main page of my journal on Dreamwidth. Most of it is obvious, I guess. The Reading page contains posts from people and communities that I have designated. I can create many different views for my reading page, with different communities and individuals, of course. I have great flexibility and control for who can see each post, including me-only and public. Public posts can be shared with non-members and indexed by outside search engines. From the posting page I can also post to any community that I'm part of. The inbox allows private messages as well as containing copies of any comments made on my posts. I'll include a second screenshot with more detail in the comments. #WhatItsLike

FYI for anyone complaining about the lack of public posts on MeWe, this is from the CEO, who is doing an AMA on Reddit: Q: Will public posts on MeWe be indexable and searchable by outside search engines such as Google? If so, will the results from a search be able to directly link to individual posts? Or will non-MeWe members have to sign up to see them? A: We're working on this - in V1 in late 2018 they will not be, we want to make sure we get the open post model perfect for our members and their followers/profiles. In V2 which we expect early in 2019, we expect them to be indexable and searchable and visible. Most importantly we are committed to protecting our members and their data, so we are carefully exploring how best to do this. Which is what I tried to explain to some asshole on here the other week. The official release notes haven't referenced this, but the developers over there have been hinting that true public posts, versus "open posts" visible to everyone

I have opened an account at https://steemit.com/@cade.johnson On arrival there one is made strongly aware of the focus on monetization of content. Not being particularly interested in that aspect is simplifying in a way - I can ignore about 80% of the content. Promotion of photography posts seems to occupy much of the remaining bandwidth. There are, as far as I have been able to ascertain, no news services posting there. A couple of topics which I personally follow - offgrid living and artificial intelligence, don't make their list of "all tags". So I am mildly discouraged, but only beginning. If anyone else is there, please advise me here or on steemit so we can share notes. http://Steemit.com

Thoughts on APIs

Thoughts on APIs One of the best parts about G+ has been the API that allows services like FriendsPlusMe to exist. I asked them whether they were going to support MeWe, Mastodon, or Diaspora. Their response: ”Almost no reasonable G+ alternative offer an API, MeWe and Diaspora are no exception. We’ll have to wait for these two but we should be able to come up with Mastodon support in upcoming months. Stay tuned!” Given the current existence of a decent iOS Mastodon app (Tootdon), that platform Is looking better and better.

Takeout.G+Streams.Activitylog seems to be working.

Takeout.G+Streams.Activitylog seems to be working. At first glance the output is a bit weird. 4 files, each containing ALL the entries for that data type. Where full text is available, the html seems to have lost all the linefeeds. So you get one big block of text with no para breaks. +1s on comments.html Full text of the comment +1ed. +1s on posts.html Full text of the Post +1ed Comments.html Every comment you've ever done. With a link back to the post it was on. But of course that will probably disappear or 404. The section for each comment is in 2 parts. Primary text = Your comment, secondary text = Main post text. The HTML runs these together with no obviously visible break, which is confusing. My comments.html is 13Mb of text which is pretty anti-social! Poll Votes.html Link to the poll, which will presumably disappear No sign of the other datatypes visible here. https://plus.google.com/u/0/apps/activities The JSON seems to be fairly well structured and is broadly similar in

Question: Is "social networking" a worthwhile goal?

Question: Is "social networking" a worthwhile goal? Why, or why not? Some sub-questions: What is it? What does it offer? For good or bad? What doesn't it offer? Are the bad parts fixable? What practical alternatives are possible? Are there elements particularly resistant to repair, which generate frictions, or hard to replace?

Information to consider when choosing a new Social Media home:

Information to consider when choosing a new Social Media home: The world view of a network owner drives how they govern the service. This is turn drives what money backs them and therefore stimulates initial growth. Over time, the market drives the rise and fall of any network. This directly correlates to whether the network is moderated without bias or moderated at all. We already see evidence of bias in certain networks governed by the alt-right. Gab is only one of them. Reports by multiple users, proud announcements by owners of their political views, and obvious marketing show MeWe and Minds are also in the same space as Gab. While I give each technology a fair shake, the world view of owners of these networks matter. Reports of bias by some in moderating user content should concern everyone looking for a new home. Influencing a company owned service politically is a fool's errand IMO. Businesses, organizations, and individuals have a legal right to decide who their customers w

Pillowfort.io: "A better social media platform"

Pillowfort.io: "A better social media platform" Kickstarter: Pillowfort.io is a new blogging platform that aims to improve the current state of social media by providing better privacy and communication tools. We saw people on today's major social media networks complaining about the limitations and flaws of these sites, yet lamenting that there was nowhere better to go. We aim to be that better place to go: a user-friendly space on the web for creativity, communication and content-sharing. We’re creating Pillowfort.io because we are avid bloggers ourselves, and have long dreamed of a platform that would bring together all the best features of the various platforms we’ve used over the years, allowing each user to customize their own experience. Pillowfort is currently in closed beta with over 10,000 users. Everyone who donates $5 or more will get a registration key (or keys) on September 1st to create an account on the site, so if you want to try out the site while it&

Everything You Need to Know About Facebook Groups

Facebook Pages & Groups I am researching the difference between "Pages" and "Groups" on Facebook. Hi everyone

Hi everyone I found MeWe the most intresting social network till now It has so many options (ALMOST ALL OF THE OTHER NETWORKS & TELEGRAM FEATURES) with a nice interface I think it is a good choice to migrate

I've been thinking about the Alternatives spreadsheet.

I've been thinking about the Alternatives spreadsheet. It seems to me that for the kind of data it contains, form entry would probably not be ideal. We'd get lots of duplicate entries, and the editors would have to spend a lot of time trying to reconcile them. That wouldn't be at all efficient, and I don't think it would serve the purpose of the sheet - which is to assemble an objective list of the features all all available alternatives. So I'd like to leave things as they are for that one. You can ask me for editing access by emailing me at my Gmail address, which is my first initial and my last name, with no spaces or other characters. However , what if I created a form to assemble impressions and feelings about alternatives? They'd feed into a spreadsheet that would be publicly viewable, and it would give people the chance to see how G+ users feel about various alternatives overall. What do you think?

My invitation for you

My invitation for you The consumer version of Google+ will be discontinued in August 2019. All profiles, collections, and communities will be deleted by Google without any succeeding comparable service (as for now). I moderated the largest Apple-related community on G+ with more than 900k members successfully keeping out spammers, trolls, and sickos even in the comment sections of posts. It was absolutely clean admittedly it needed really hard work. Now I’m on MeWe after looking for an appropriate alternative. Please join my group ‘Apple iThings’ https://mewe.com/join/apple-ithings on MeWe. Why MeWe? MeWe feels like Google+. Lots of exciting improvements are announced for this year to let the expatriates feel well. Thanks a lot. Looking forward to meet you on MeWe.

You can write posts and share photos, and your followers will retrieve them using BitTorrent running over the I2P anonymous network. It is still experimental and not well-tested, but the goal is to have uncensorable, untraceable communication and file-sharing on mobile devices and PCs. Join the discussion on /r/Nightweb and read the blog. Tent.io ( http://tent.io ) Tent lets you control your data instead of handing it over to service and app providers. Just like email, you choose a Tent provider or can set up your own Tent server. Tent data and relationships are portable so you can change Tent providers easily at any time. Also like email, all Tent users are first class citizens,

foodies+ community is headed to Facebook

foodies+ community is headed to Facebook (Not clear if temporary or permanent) Originally shared by Azlin Bloor Foodies+ Community on Facebook I'm sure you've all heard that G+ is closing down. Everything is going to be wound down until the complete shut down on the 31st August 2019. As we have built quite the community here, we don't want to lose all the hard work that we've all put in. So I've created a Foodies+ group over at Facebook, in the hope of transitioning all that we do here. I think Facebook groups are a great alternative to G+ communities, because: 1. As long as you have Notifications on, you won't miss a post. 2. There are categories in a group, so most, if not all the categories will be carried over. 3. Conversations will still take place on all our posts, as they do here. The group is brand new, and we shall continue life over there, just as we do here. We would love to see you in the Foodies+ Facebook community. Here is the link: https://www.f

Board Games community are looking at MeWe

Board Games community are looking at MeWe Originally shared by Ben Gerber Hey everyone, here's the deal as it stands right now. We're going to be experimenting with MeWe - and have set up our group there. It's not G+ but it's the closest compatible platform we've come across. It's got some decent image management, a built in chat feature which is nice, and will be fairly familiar to everyone here. We wish it had built in integration to Google Photos - but not yet. Perhaps if enough of us suggest this, they'll adopt it as a feature. mewe.com/join/board_game_community is the link. Also, if there are any seasoned Discord mods here in the wild, hit me up. We're toying with the idea of also having a Discord up and running at the same time. The only real reason not to is lack of knowledge/moderation for it. Right now, we're going to be looking at and moderating two communities. This one and the MeWe one (with Discord being a possible third). So please bea

Has anybody actually had any luck with Takeout exporting their Google+ Stream ActivityLog, JSON or otherwise?

Has anybody actually had any luck with Takeout exporting their Google+ Stream ActivityLog, JSON or otherwise? It fails consistently for me for at least two and usually all three of these: +1s on comments +1s on posts Comments Everything else I can get just fine, but not these three. In nine attempts across roughly a week, I managed to get one that claimed to contain "Comments.json", but actually didn't, and one that contained a "+1s on comments.json" with some sane-looking data even though the report overview claimed that it didn't.

There's been a recent update post from DiasporaHQ on new features, which seems semi-inspired by the recent influx of G+ expats: https://joindiaspora.com/posts/12993702 The announcement seems to be taken with a spoonful of scorn in some parts of the Fediverse/ActivityPub world: https://social.nasqueron.org/@deadsuperhero/100948954799049039 Also burried in that thread and semi-related: Hubzilla might lose federation capabilities with Diaspora in the future: "Zap and Osada will not be providing the Diaspora protocol as an option. It is also somewhat unlikely Hubzilla will be able to continue federating with Diaspora when it is upgraded to Zot6. I'll try to preserve the current federation options, but it does not look promising." https://osada.macgirvin.com/item/5828f6b5-f4b7-4929-bc98-67848c2743b7 https://joindiaspora.com/posts/12993702

A reminder: REQUEST JSON FORMAT for Google Data Takeout

A reminder: REQUEST JSON FORMAT for Google Data Takeout Google HTML is absolutely worthless. The instructions don't make this clear, but you're going to see this advice repeated repeatedly and repetitiously. With great frequency. Repeatedly. REQUEST JSON FORMAT for Google Data Takeout Why? Because the JSON format can be used by tools for extraction and import. Two things everybody can do to create a better alternative

Two things everybody can do to create a better alternative If you do not code: Software like Mastodon runs on Open, recommended Protocols (see below). The awesome people who made this possible are volunteers from the W3C Social Working Group. They need some money because without bread they can't write. The co-author of ActivityPub can be backed up on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cwebber/overview Awareness and working on the other protocols can be supported via indieweb on OpenCollective: https://opencollective.com/indieweb If you code, just do it. But comment here, we organise and sponsor a Hackathon to create communities right before FOSDEM ! The specifications for ActivityPub, MicroPub, WebSub and WebMention all reached the W3C Recommendation level (the highest level). https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/ https://www.w3.org/TR/micropub/ https://www.w3.org/TR/websub/ https://www.w3.org/TR/webmention/ https://opencollective.com/indieweb

I only found out last night Google is shutting the door.

I only found out last night Google is shutting the door. Too bad, I really invested in this site and made many great friends. Anyway, due to owning several communities here, having many friends, acquaintances and so on, I created a Google Meetup Group on Facebook. It's for anyone needing a place to land, advertise, talk about what's next etc. It doesn't matter if one plans to go to MeWe or another site, having a stable meetup group on G+ should help as things wind down and members/friends need a place to find out what's happening. I'll promote it more in the next few months to get the word around.
