It's gonna be awkward that a few hours from now I won't be getting new notifications and there will be no G+ to log into, after years of doing it every day. I won't declare my signal flare though because... Let's just say I don't want to be found, or I already have established contacts with ex-plussers I wanted to connect with in other places. Chances are you'll bump into me wherever you go out there anyway, because despite what I said above my profile is pretty easy to spot and hard to miss. I don't offer much in my profile to begin with, only dumping random stuff to indicate that the profile is 'alive'.

I just noticed that the now-gone notification widget reincarnated in a new place.

For the very little remaining time we have here I still have one question left to ask. Is it possible to migrate data between different fediverse platforms? For example Diaspora to/from Friendica or Friendica to/from Hubzilla, etc. In the past I went back and forth between Blogger and WordPress a lot. I'm currently in testing phase of my Friendica installation and it just occurred to me what if I wanted to migrate to other platform in the future. Would be nice to be able to just port the data over instead of starting from zero again. Maybe it's already possible but I'm not aware of any tool for that or if any of the fediverse platforms have built-in support for data migration.

G+ data takeout doesn't seem to show the progress bar anymore.

G+ data takeout doesn't seem to show the progress bar anymore. I remember the progress bar was still there yesterday showing "less than 1MB". This is the first time I'm seeing this, considering I've done this more than 5 times since December. And this most recent takeout I'm doing for my community is also taking quite a long time (I think I started 2 or 3 days ago) although I selected only one community that contains only a few hundreds of posts.

The app is still getting updates as usual.

The app is still getting updates as usual. I wonder if they were just following the update schedule or someone in the team are still working their ass off to improve it.

There's a web client for Mastodon that gives Mastodon the look of Google+. You can add as many Mastodon instances to your profile. The client itself is available in English (albeit in broken English) and the documentation is only in Japanese at the time of writing. Since the data takeout seems to have been 'fixed' according to reports by other members here I decided to give it a try again. The archive was 'incomplete' but 12GB is more realistic as opposed to what takeout used to give me a few weeks ago, though this takeout is only for posts; I excluded pictures and anything else. With my 3rd world internet speed this much would take overnight to download. Good thing I chose the 1GB archive size so I could try downloading 2 or 3 zip files per night. Edit: I think I've read somewhere that the 'imcomplete' probably has something to do with interactions with blocked/deleted accounts or contents. Will check it later.

Data takeout finally successful without error at the 4th attempt.

Data takeout finally successful without error at the 4th attempt. This time I made sure I only selected posts (exclude photos and everything else) but still come up with almost 400GB anyway. I guess I'll just use the G+ Exporter app then.

Maybe I should give up the attempts to takeout/export my G+ data.

Maybe I should give up the attempts to takeout/export my G+ data. My first takeout request just completed recently but I was given less than a week to download 478.96 GB of data (both G+ Stream and Communities data). With internet speed of only around 20 - 30 MBps there's no way I could download that in a week, unless I let my PC and internet running all day, and cry at the electricity bill at the end of the month. My second attempt of only selecting G+ Stream produced 'only' 193.03 GB of data, but even that was reported as "archive incomplete". I hope I will have better luck with my third attempt by only selecting Posts from the Stream (unselected Activity Log, Collection Metadata and Events). Seeing how big the size of the data I can conclude that I really used G+ a lot, maybe beyond what most other people consider 'normal'. I've tried the Google+ Exporter tool but even with the latest version 1.1.0 it fails every single time.

In a move to make "a better, more positive Tumblr", they will remove pr0n from the site starting this month.

EDIT: I guess this has something to do with the takedown of the app from App Store recently. EDIT 2: This is why we need post-editing feature, as I forgot to write about the App Store thing. https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr

SOLID is probably what we need to solve the problem with internet privacy but identity could still be a weak link.

SOLID is probably what we need to solve the problem with internet privacy but identity could still be a weak link. "Since the location of your POD is stored in your ID, it is easy to relocate your POD as needed. However, the proposed WebIDs include the domain name of the identity provider. For example, if you get your WebID from Berners-Lee’s own Solid startup, Inrupt, it will be of the form @ inrupt.net . So you can’t easily move your WebID. To make matters worse, it’s likely that if Solid becomes successful most users will get their WebIDs the easiest possible way — from one of the places they already have an identity like Google or Facebook. Those companies would then still have leverage over them, and also would have full knowledge of queries made about the ID. I suspect they’d also be the major provider of POD storage as well, meaning they’ll have fairly complete audit trails of your activity on the web." https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/281334-tim-berners-lees-solid...

"PoP – Platform of Platforms is a WordPress framework which aims to break the information monopoly of large Internet corporations by linking autonomous WordPress websites together, allowing them to interact with each other and become part of a wider network composed of different communities." (quoted from https://wordpress.tv/2016/09/10/leonardo-losoviz-how-to-make-a-decentralized-wordpress-website/ ) Someone is trying to decentralize WordPress. According to the author it is not quite ready yet. I believe this is not the first of such attempt but it's probably the only one active now. https://github.com/leoloso/PoP

I'm an artist who regularly post my artworks to Pixiv (Japanese equivalent of DeviantArt) so when Pixiv decided to host its own Mastodon instance called Pawoo and integrates it with Pixiv accounts, I naturally get to use it too. Pawoo seems to be the most popular Mastodon instance with 420k users (beating mastodon.social itself) but is not for everyone for reasons stated in this article (though you can safely use the app with your preferred instance). Consider this a 'warning'. http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog/2017/08/18/mastodon-is-big-in-japan-the-reason-why-is-uncomfortable/
