I have been posting on Google+ since it started.

I have been posting on Google+ since it started. It has been a great alternative to Facebook, and has been vidal in keeping in touch with my family as I travel the world. I am dissapointed that even though we make billions for Google, they cannot let us have something we really like just because it doesn't make millions a month for them. They are greedy and do not deserve the loyalty we have given them.

Another casualty. Just got this in email to the admin address of one of my G Suite domains:

Another casualty. Just got this in email to the admin address of one of my G Suite domains: Google logo Hello Administrator, We are reaching out to people who may have customized their Google Voice incoming call rules based on Google+ Circles. In light of the upcoming changes to Google+ and in the interests of our adopters, we will be removing call routing rules based on Google+ Circles on March 4 2019. From our analysis it appears that users in your domain have created custom call routing rules based on Google+ Circles. What does this mean for my organization? After March 2019, incoming calls to Google Voice phone numbers used by members of your organization will not follow any settings they may have had for callers in Google+ Circles. All other call routing rules, such as those based on members’ Google Contacts, will remain intact. What actions do I need to take? We recommend reaching out to the affected users and informing them of this update. Google Voice is not currently included

Administrivia: Please do NOT disable comments on your posts to G+MM unless specifically requested by a moderator or owner This is a posting and discussion channel, not a personal soapbox. Mods will be removing posts with locked comments unless there's been a request from a mod to lock comments. Also: if you are requested to lock comments please do so . It's generally because 1) incorrect information is being presented or 2) the discussion is derailing other activity or attention. We've got 61 days left, and that's far to little to get caught up in nonsense. Finally: please don't remove comments, even spam, from your posts to G+MM. It's a lot cleaner and less dramatic if mods do that (and take the heat for it). If there is spam, we want to be able to ban and delete other content from the source as well (and have been doing a lot of that). Thanks for your assistance. cc: John Lewis Cindy Brown

I have created G+ flags for when we are on MeWe.

Originally shared by loomcast podcast I have created G+ flags for when we are on MeWe. - First one is the colonial flag, I kind of temporary flag meant to display that MeWe is a second home and that our main one is G+. This one is meant to be used before the G+ shutdown. It is lightly based off of the Australian flag and also the flag of basically all british colonies and former colonies. - Second one is the main flag, or post-colonial flag. This flag shows MeWe as our sole home, and that we are independent from Google, though it still has the classic G+ colour to represent our origin. This is the flag to be shown on most occasions after G+ is shut down. - Third is the "navy" flag of G+. This flag can be used both during our colonial and post-colonial period and has a functional use to represent us during raids and in other online conflicts in which a symbolic representation of G+ users from MeWe are needed. - The other three are examples of "state" or group/communi

My thoughts on Google's Jan 30th announcement, and a timeline overview

My thoughts on Google's Jan 30th announcement, and a timeline overview Originally shared by Filip H.F. “FiXato” Slagter Google finally provided additional details and dates regarding the shutdown of Google+ Below I've included a copy of the official announcement with more information that was provided today, though I would suggest reading the most recent version at: https://support.google.com/plus/answer/9195133 I've also included the official F.A.Q. further down the page, but I recommend reading the full, up-to-date version at: https://support.google.com/plus/answer/9217723?hl=en&ref_topic=9195238 Most important things (imho) to learn from these documents: • Timeline: ° January 28 (2 days ago): the APIs (used by third party developers to access content from Google+ through programming) will start experiencing intermittent failures. ° February 4th: no longer able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities or events ° February 4th: *Google+ for comments will be

Hubzilla and Pluspora Cross Posting Test

Hubzilla and Pluspora Cross Posting Test Just a quick note, as I haven't seen much of anything about it: Cross posting from a Hubzilla account to a Pluspora account works. Although I set up the ability on my Hubzilla account a few days ago, I hadn't had a chance to try it out before today. I was interested in testing the capability because although Hubzilla seems to have some additional features that Pluspora lacks, and that are nice to use, it also seems to have picked up fewer G+ refugees than Pluspora has. So it's a way to hedge my bet on which site to be on, while waiting to see how development proceeds, without having to duplicate posts across sites. It was quite simple to do. It required adding the Diaspora protocol to my Hubzilla account, then adding my Pluspora account as a contact on Hubzilla. Once that was done, the new post on Hubzilla appeared on the Pluspora account in just a few moments. Hopefully, it will also work in the reverse direction. I'm hoping to

How the shutdown of Google+ affects Google+ Comments for Blogger

How the shutdown of Google+ affects Google+ Comments for Blogger While my post here on Google+ is mostly ranting at/about Blogger for not providing a migration path, and being so late with informing its users, the linked article is Blogger's announcement post going into details on how Blogger will be affected by the #GooglePlusShutdown. In short, any comments posted to Blogger blogs using the Google+ Comments system rather than Blogger's original own Comments system, will be lost. +1 and share buttons and related Google+ web integration will also disappear from Blogger. No migration path is provided. Since the data takeout seems to have been 'fixed' according to reports by other members here I decided to give it a try again. The archive was 'incomplete' but 12GB is more realistic as opposed to what takeout used to give me a few weeks ago, though this takeout is only for posts; I excluded pictures and anything else. With my 3rd world internet speed this much would take overnight to download. Good thing I chose the 1GB archive size so I could try downloading 2 or 3 zip files per night. Edit: I think I've read somewhere that the 'imcomplete' probably has something to do with interactions with blocked/deleted accounts or contents. Will check it later.

About contacts.

About contacts. Is there a way to automatically "harvest" the profile IDs (or even more) of people I interact with here on G+? I am talking of: - people in my circles - people following me or collections of mine - people in my communities - people in communities I'm in or was in - people I've discussed or interacted with in some respect The best would be some kind of AI automatically harvesting their #SignalFlare info. ;-) Any ideas?

I’ve tried a google takeout. My activity has been light and only maybe the last 18 months so not a lot to backup.

I’ve tried a google takeout. My activity has been light and only maybe the last 18 months so not a lot to backup. I’m not a blogger and have no website to restore to so i went with html format. I can see all the text of posts made and comment threads but saved collections and so on all seem to end up with links back to plus.google.xxxx addresses. My understanding is that’ll disappear or become inaccessible when g+ closes. Is this correct? Do i have to save images manually? Or do i have to use json format and maybe also the other 3rd party tool? In which case how do i look at the content inside a json file? I thought I understood things better but obviously not. Rather confused at present.

It appears Google Takeout now works properly. At least it is working now for me, when it didn't before.

It appears Google Takeout now works properly. At least it is working now for me, when it didn't before. Previously for me it created a 34+ GB archive that contained ridiculous numbers of redundant images, as many as 30 copies of the same image, and often they weren't even my images. I couldn't sift my way through the subset I downloaded to make any sense of it, and I didn't have the bandwidth to download all 34+ GB, especially knowing it was mostly duplicate photos that weren't mine. I was sure I had nowhere near that much of my own data in G+. Today, after Google updated the Google+ Shutdown FAQ which included a link to Takeout, I ran Takeout and got just 1.5 GB. I downloaded it and it seems to contain exactly what I would expect. All my posts and photos, in and outside of communities, with nothing obviously duplicated, and nobody else's photos. It does not organize posts by Collection like the Friends+Me exporter does, but it includes some photo comments that

Frequently asked questions about the Google+ shutdown - Google+ Help

Frequently asked questions about the Google+ shutdown - Google+ Help Carefully buried in Google's announcement today of an April 2, 2019 shutdown date, was a link to a FAQ addressing at least some of the questions many of us have had over the shutdown, effects, timing, and more. This is Google's official FAQ on the G+ shutdown and may be useful. Key takeaways: Your data will not be available after April 2. Data export must occur before the shutdown. Google will begin deleting most user data associated with G+ immediately following the April 2 shutdown. There are a few exceptions (some categories of photos, legal mandates), and some surprising inclusions. It appears Google want this data gone, gone, gone. If you don't , you're going to have to do something about it now . The actual deletion may take some months. I suspect this has to do with how data were stored and addressed in different versions of G+, and it's likely that most data will be deleted f

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ Q: When is Google+ shutting down? A: April 2, 2019. Five months earlier than originally announced. March 7, 2019 for Google+ APIs , including Google+ Sign-in and integrations for web & mobile apps . https://support.google.com/plus/answer/9195133 https://developers.google.com/+/api-shutdown Q: Where should I go? A: There is no one answer! This community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most. So given the accelerated timeline, looks like it's time to make choices.

So given the accelerated timeline, looks like it's time to make choices. Where are you going? Where would you ideally go if it was complete/ready/functional/more popular? Where is your community going? And seeing that notifications for posts seem to be broken, and quite frankly, I doubt it'll be fixed, we might be talking to a wall for a while. Personally, I've been on Twitter and newly introduced to Pluspora and MeWe, so I'll use those. I'm moving a community I run to MeWe, just because of the tools, but ideally I would have loved Disapora as a solution... but it's just not good at all for communities. I would love to see how Hubzilla turns out, but have yet to try it out.

Updated Plexodus Schedule Recommendations

Updated Plexodus Schedule Recommendations Given today's announcement that the G+ shutdown will happen on April 2, 2019 , and not at the end of the month, time is even more critical. I've revisited and revised my planning schedule, already truncated from its initial target five months further out . This is what I come up with. Communications and information sharing is key. Talk to your Circles and Communities. You should have been doing this long ago. Time to consider long-shot or risky alternatives is long gone. Find something basic and proven that works now . Back up your data if you plan on keeping it. Post and collect forwarding addresses and information. February * Provide updated status, plans, goals. * No later than now declare new platform(s) live alpha. * Publicise new location(s). * Direct Google+ members to new services. * Select material for import. * Perform necessary edits and modifications. * Import and assess data. * Provide breadcrumbs, hashtags, and

I feel the need to say this now since the end is looming.

I feel the need to say this now since the end is looming. I've thoroughly enjoyed everyone's feedback, opinions, and suggestions in this community. Even though I've mainly used G+ as both a source of information and updates from blogs I follow (which many have stopped posting recently) and to post my work I've found the people to be considerate and helpful. Additionally, G+ has been a nice stay with its simplicity, ad-free environment, and personally feeling like I've been supporting the underdog. So thank you to this community as I'm curious specifically as to what becomes of both Openbook and Micro.blog. They seem to carry the simplicity torch many are craving.

Shutting down Google+ for consumer (personal) accounts on April 2, 2019

Shutting down Google+ for consumer (personal) accounts on April 2, 2019 January 30, 2019 In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content. On April 2nd, your Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April. Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted. The process of deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts, Google+ Pages, and Album Archive will take a few months, and content may remain through this time. For exam

Moving our maker community to WikiFactory

Moving our maker community to WikiFactory Hi all, I've not been an active poster here but reader none the less. I'm owner of another G+ community called 'Build your own ceramic 3d printer' and we've had a lot of active discussion over the last months about where to go now that G+ shuts down. We're a maker community with very specific needs, for example more than 90% of our active members use G+ only to participate in our community, so they don't use it as a social network for which I see most discussion here. But we were looking for something more like a discussion forum. In case it might be useful for this community (I would be sad to see it go!!!) here are some details on our own plans. We will move our community to Wikifactory, a social design and production platform born out of WikiHouse that best resembles something like GitHub for hardware. Currently it's more focused on hosting open source hardware projects and stories but we're actively worki

G+ Migration Outreach And Steve Winwood: Eleven Point Two Million Served

G+ Migration Outreach And Steve Winwood: Eleven Point Two Million Served Summary: Today I reached "another several million people" for G+ migration. Over at G+ Beautiful Pictures . My new goal is to reach fourteen million people [ memberships ] on G+. "I can't find my way home." Steve Winwood G+ Beautiful Pictures has over three point two million members, active or inactive. I like the group but had not posted there, including not for G+ migration. The group rules clearly state "no promotion of other groups". That puts a major damper on my work. Other groups say the same thing. Suhaib Alhashmi posted a poll on G+ shutdown which received 2654 votes and 73 reshares. One of the reshares was Zohra Khan reposting to G+ Beautiful Pictures , again having 3.2M members. On this thread I added my standard G+ migration outreach post. So at this point I am claiming eight million plus three point two million people reached, or eleven point two million membershi

Despite the fact that it's not using my post image, the link below is directly to my post on the new cryptosocial UBI network, Hyperspace. Today marks the third day of the Open Beta. I understand this to be the first iteration brought to term by Dor Konforty - who you may recognize as I do from G+ from when he was trying to launch Synereo. Seems like that project went south somewhere along the way, and this one might actually make it to term. Open Beta is a good sign at least. As I'm not particularly well versed in crypto (don't even have a wallet unless you count my steemit account), I'm not sure how worthless an "AMP" is, and as I go into in the post below, I still don't know how to cash out. However, assuming there is some pathway from AMP to cash in your wallet, the UBI appeal of this social network gives it the best fighting chance of any G+ replacements I've seen to date. It looks like Spaces are a bit like collections, and hopefully they'll

I was just looking at the way mewe is growing so rapidly, and to some extent it reminded me of G+ in the early days. Google Plus stopped its growth when they stopped the ability to share circles. As frustrating as it was that there were a lot of spammers who shared circles, the bottom line was that we grew quickly as a result. I hope someone can convince mewe to add that ability."

Maybe this question is so basic and clearly understood that there's no point in even asking, but what is the problem with starting new groups or activity in places like Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter? The implied answer is that people liked Google + for not being those places, that every site or platform has it's own strengths and drawbacks, and in particular dislike for Facebook was part of the Google + appeal (maybe related to perceived privacy issues too, or because friends and family are on there?). All the same I see people asking about how to establish group functions in other places that are very straightforward in Facebook (privacy options, control of membership, sharing features, free access, etc.). Reddit is limited for functionality, with an odd structure, and I don't like Twitter at all, so I guess it reduces to what is seen as wrong with FB.

Just a mental note, just because a social network allows for anything to be posted without restriction, it doesn't mean that it values freedom or has any particular righteous cause to throw off oppressively censored networks. And in the same manner, those networks that help to keep some amount of decorum, are not necessarily overlords wanting to control everything in sight. Let's see how the comments go...

What I'm doing, for what it's worth

What I'm doing, for what it's worth I've been active on Google+ (Ok, the world's biggest G+ fanboi...) and so I thought I should chime in and let everyone know what my plan is: * My main G+ replacement is a Squarespace blog: https://elgan.com/ * I'm also doubling down on Twitter, mainly because I'm a journalist and Twitter is crack cocaine for journalists * I'm toying with an embrace of Linkedin, because I already have a ton of contacts there * As I type this, I'm downloading all my posts with Google Takeout. I'm probably going to re-post a bunch of them for posterity * I'm also quitting Facebook (because it sucks) and am replacing it with a shared folder on Google Photos. Here's an explanation: https://elgan.com/blog/how-i-replaced-facebook-with-google-photos In other words, and to summarize, I'm scattered to the wind with the closure of Google+, just like everyone else And finally, in case you missed it, I wrote a Eulogy for Google+ for

Google Groups no longer a viable alternative for large communities?

Google Groups no longer a viable alternative for large communities? Note, this is based on the experience and report of a single¹ Google Groups community, so don't take it at face value, but rather use it as a consideration, especially since another Group² reports not experiencing this issue. From the original topic¹ on Google Groups: «After speaking with Google support, it appears that Google has changed the rules on large groups (500-1000 users) to implement a deliberate decision (that has apparently not yet been announced) to not support large groups. The change is to simply block messages based on some unspecified criteria, and the rejection message cites spam but is not actually spam related (and the messages do not appear in a spam folder where we could try to recover them, they are just deleted), and the rejection message suggests making the group moderated (but the group is already moderated). Google support wasn't entirely clear on the details, but said that Google wil

After (re)creating 5 wordpress blogs and one blogger blog, I finally think I have something I can work with.

After (re)creating 5 wordpress blogs and one blogger blog, I finally think I have something I can work with. I'm still not sure exactly how I got there, but I think I have a good guess. The first attempt was blogger. "Google+ Exporter" (G+E) (does it still work?) didn't have direct support for wordpress (wp) in its earlier versions, so I did blogger. That worked pretty well, but left all the media (mainly photos) hosted on Google's content distribution network. G+E quickly produced updates that 1) gave a means to save most of the media and 2) export directly in wp format. I ran it again and generated the export files. Then created a wordpress.com free blog and imported my g+ stream. This is at " mosqueeto.wordpress.com ".
