I'm trying to track down an online (?), third-party, G+ Communities extract tool Update: Found it, thanks, Adam Black! I thought I'd posted it myself though I cannot seem to find it. Ring any bells? SOLID is probably what we need to solve the problem with internet privacy but identity could still be a weak link. "Since the location of your POD is stored in your ID, it is easy to relocate your POD as needed. However, the proposed WebIDs include the domain name of the identity provider. For example, if you get your WebID from Berners-Lee’s own Solid startup, Inrupt, it will be of the form @ inrupt.net . So you can’t easily move your WebID. To make matters worse, it’s likely that if Solid becomes successful most users will get their WebIDs the easiest possible way — from one of the places they already have an identity like Google or Facebook. Those companies would then still have leverage over them, and also would have full knowledge of queries made about the ID. I suspect they’d also be the major provider of POD storage as well, meaning they’ll have fairly complete audit trails of your activity on the web." https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/281334-tim-berners-lees-solid

MeWe: A Trip Report

MeWe: A Trip Report Among the more frequently mentioned G+ alternatives at the Google+ Mass Migration community, and others, is MeWe, billing itself as "The Next-Gen Social Network" and the "anti-Facebook": "No Ads, No Political Bias, No Spyware. NO BS. It is headed by professed Libertarian CEO Mark Weinstein. As the site reveals no public user-generated content to non-members, it's necessary to create an account in order to get a full impression. I thought I'd provide an overview based on recent explorations. This report leads of with background on the company, though readers may find the report and analysis of specific groups on the site of interest.... There's recently been a question about moving G+ Photos to Google Photos. [That is, Photos posted to Google+] Just been playing with this. Here's one route. 1. Go to Google Photos settings and set Google Drive - Sync photos & videos from Google Drive. 2. Google Takeout. G+Streams.Photos. 3. Unzip locally. 4. Copy the contents of 'Takeout\Google+ Stream\Photos\Photos from posts' to a directory in Google Drive\My Pictures 5. Fire up "Backup and Sync from Google" to upload 6. Check the photos are now present in Photos. It obviously helps to have fast up and download from your internet provider. And it is a bit cumbersome to have to download, unzip and then upload the photos. There may be some shortcuts in there. I haven't tried saving the Takeout direct to Drive. It's possible that is all that's needed if you've previously set Photos to sync from Drive. This stuff is so confused and confusing. It's extrordinary how much cruft Google ha

There's been some question over whether G+ Profiles will survive the G+ Sunset. I just came across this. https://plus.google.com/u/0/+PeggyKTC/posts/Ex4fqEf6Lo5 Google seems to be taking steps to unify the Profile display across other apps. So the data and content in your "aboutme" is displayed consistently. G+ is just one of the properties getting this change. Suggesting that this display will continue. This hasn't really migrated across yet to Android Contacts although they look somewhat similar. https://aboutme.google.com/ and Preview from the hamburger menu on that page. In typical Google fashion this is really messy and progressing piecemeal.

Walking through the Google Data Takeout request process

Walking through the Google Data Takeout request process This is an experience report and NOT a "how-to" guide. I've finally made my first Google+ Data Takeout request since the G+ sunset was announced, and in fact my first since 2013. I've written up the process at #PlexodusReddit, which is pretty much me going into the process cold, though with a few references to look at. Mostly I just stumbled through the prompts with some educated guesses. The archive is being created presently, I'll update the piece when it's done with information on how it turned out. I've captured screenshots of most of the process as well, I'll post the finalised article to Diaspora, which allows inline images (Reddit does not, a long-standing gripe of mine with the platform). For those who've seen my repeated REQUEST JSON FORMAT posts, I've detailed just where and how that applies (I hope) as well. For delivery option, I've selected delivery to Google Drive

It might also be worthwhile to start thinking about what people would actually want to do with their G+ takeout data.

It might also be worthwhile to start thinking about what people would actually want to do with their G+ takeout data. Given that there are huge mismatches in capability and features between platforms any data transformation will likely come at a loss based on what the lowest common denominator between these platforms is. And then there are also the pesky questions of copyright, ownership and control. The simplest use-case would be a static archive of some part of the G+ experience, reproducing semantic and/or visual structure of the data on the G+ site today. At the other end of the spectrum would be a live transfer on a new transfer with entity remapping (user identity, posts timeline and interactions) and with full referential integrity. I don't know if anybody would want to be ambitious enough to attempt something like that. What I am planning to do is somewhere in the middle. Take only a small subset of the data (my own identity & post data) and transform it to create new,

The State of Solid for Social

The State of Solid for Social The promise and premise of Solid can be boiled down to these core concepts: The user retains control of their data as it is stored on their own pod instead of a centralized service "Pods" are datastores that are under control of one user. they can be hosted by the users themselves or part of managed hosting It is a logical entity, not necessarily a single installation/server if it is offline, the data is gone from the web, unless some cachine is implemented (not yet specified) get your own here: https://inrupt.net/ Data can be linked across Pods, so the comment from A can point to the picture of B These links also apply to people to map the social graph The architecture makes it easy to use the data in different web services and to move from service to service. Notifications ensure that these links become visible... More at link... https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Solid https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Solid

I've been enjoying Mastodon for a few days, starting by joining an instance targeted to a community that I already associate with, and then poaching people from the federated timeline. After a couple of days, the feed seems ... useful and busy enough. It isn't a G+ though, it's a Twitter. There are some thoughtful conversations, but there are lots of throw-away tiny posts that don't necessarily add to your life, just like Twitter :-) There may be some use of #tags, but I don't see much like Communities. Pleroma and GNU Social seem to be in the same format, with small UI differences (yes there are probably significant structural diffs, but ...). I'm looking for the form of G+, not necessarily the number of users. Does anyone here have more suggestions for me? :-)

Today I talked a little bit to Joel, the founder of Openbook via their workspace on slack and here are some interesting quotes from that talk for you: Joel Very good answer. Reason I’m asking is because we’ve changed so much in the behaviour of the social network that it seems we have 2 options. We polish the mobile app to great length and release the web app a month or 2 later or we get the mobile to the core features and bring the web version to the same level of functionality. Cyrill Kunze When it's time to migrate it's easier to manage all these things on a desktop. Looking for the people you know on a new network, reconfigure your "circles", try to find and follow what you have before... These things are hard to manage on a little screen. If I have to make a decision, I would release the mobile and web app at the same time with the core features you need. At the beginning of a network it's easier to say "These features are comming, we work on it" i

G+ Notable Communities Database

G+ Notable Communities Database We've just updated the #PlexodusWiki community directory page with known announcements and decisions for communities migrating from G+. This is a self-serve resource, if you're a Community owner or mod, please do add your community to this directory . We're aware the formats a bit crufty and all that, but if you can provide in the following information, we can edit it into shape: * Community name and G+ URL. * Short description (your G+ tagline should fit fine). * Any announcement link, if possible. * Links to the primary forum, blog, microblog, social media, and/or feeds (RSS/Atom) that you've established. (You'll likely not have all of these.) (If you have other links you want to provide, please do, we're still working on the format here.) This article talks about how Facebook modified its groups settings. Originally, there was an option for groups to hide posts from the general public, but have the name of the group visible to the public - with that option the names of the members of the group were also public. Then there was the secret option, in which the public would not even be able to find the group - membership was by invitation only. They finally realized they needed to have a group setting that would make a group visible to the pubic, but hide the names of members from the public. I will confess I didn't read the entire article - I read about half-way to learn about this problem with settings. They also added ways for monitors to screen potential group members - I didn't read far enough to see if the details of that were included. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/10/facebook-emotional-support-groups/572941/ https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/10/facebook-emotional-s

Pterotype: Wordpress Plugin for ActivityPub / Mastodon syndication

Pterotype: Wordpress Plugin for ActivityPub / Mastodon syndication ...Pterotype makes your blog look like a Mastodon/Pleroma/whatever account to users on those platforms. So, if you install Pterotype on your blog, Mastodon users will be able to search for blog@yourawesomesite.com in Mastodon and see your blog as if it was a Mastodon user. If they follow your blog within Mastodon (or Pleroma, or…), your new posts will show up in their home feed. This is what I meant in my last post about ActivityPub making sites first-class citizens in social networks – you don’t need a Mastodon account to make this work, and your content will show up in any service that implements ActivityPub without you needing an account on those platforms either.... h/t Isaac Kuo / Diaspora https://jeremydormitzer.com/blog/announcing-pterotype/ https://jeremydormitzer.com/blog/announcing-pterotype/

PlexodusWiki: Migrating Google+ Communities

PlexodusWiki: Migrating Google+ Communities Google+ Communities have a number of specific considerations for migration. This page discusses these. There are over 7.9 million Communities, though an overwhelming number have few if any members. This still leaves a fair number of larger communities, 57,000 with 1,000 or more members, for example, and the potential for numerous smaller-but-vital communities. While it's possible to estimate number, membership, and size distribution (see below), measures of ''activity'' and ''vitality'' are far more difficult. Exploration suggests a relatively small share of truly active communities, perhaps an upper bound of a few percent, and quite possibly far less, of those with more than 100 members being our estimate as of 26 November 2018. Regardless, there are many groups faced with the question of how or whether to continue themselves, where, and how.... This is one of the guides I've had in mind to create

Estimating G+ Communities by size

Estimating G+ Communities by size I've been kicking at the problem of trying to estimate total G+ activity for a few years, and with the Plexodus, the question of how many active Communities are there is particularly pressing. Setting an arbitrary cutoff, consider communities of > 1,000 members. Based on some preliminary results -- 6,000+ completed of a larger randomly-selected communities sample of 12,000, I'm going to suggest there are about 55k - 65k communities > 1,000 members on Google+, from a total Communities population of 7.974 million. I'm using my old familiar method of working from sitemaps for Google+, with a running commentary as results come in posted to Diaspora here: https://joindiaspora.com/posts/dbee1250d0680136d1dc0218b70db60d Briefly, you can grab the top-level sitemaps via Google+'s robots.txt file, at https://plus.google.com/robots.txt One line of that file reads: Sitemap: http://www.gstatic.com/communities/sitemap/communities-sitemap.xml

Once upon a time, I used to route G+ public posts to my blog, Twitter, Facebook.

Once upon a time, I used to route G+ public posts to my blog, Twitter, Facebook. The idea was "Post once - Cross-post everywhere" . So I posted once on G+ and the system cross posted the article or a subset of it to all the other platforms. This originally used http://dlvr.it but then they stopped reading G+. I was never completely happy with the layout. And I needed to code for this in my own blog anyway, so I wrote a G+ post to Atom convertor. This gave me an Atom feed to push into http://dlvr.it as well as a source for my blog to auto-create posts. Then Facebook stopped allowing external apps to post on a personal timeline. This process always had to start with G+ because that didn't have a write API. It could only be a source for cross posting, not a sink. http://dlvr.it and IFTTT have become less and less useful as they monetise and keep reducing support for free users. Meanwhile, new systems started to turn up with their own APIs like Mastodon, Diaspora, Hubzilla

"PoP – Platform of Platforms is a WordPress framework which aims to break the information monopoly of large Internet corporations by linking autonomous WordPress websites together, allowing them to interact with each other and become part of a wider network composed of different communities." (quoted from https://wordpress.tv/2016/09/10/leonardo-losoviz-how-to-make-a-decentralized-wordpress-website/ ) Someone is trying to decentralize WordPress. Google TAKEOUT now.

Google TAKEOUT now. You should probably be doing a Google Takeout once a month. Just FYI, the format of the data keeps changing. We have people tracking this, but since Google is modifying what data is included and moving it around, you may want earlier or later copies. If you have the hard drive space, keep them with dates so you can refer back to older copies when you get a chance. The reason this is important is because all this data will most likely be gone after the close Google+. You'll probably have no way to look it up and if you ever wanted to migrate, this is the only way. We are currently recommending JSON as the format to take out in, but that might change. You can't really go wrong with JSON, as it ports easily to other formats... and programmers like to use this format. Questions? Ask in the comments. https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout

When we consider new homes, where social capital is generally quite low - where we don't know anyone and they don't know us; we have to anticipate that the process of creating the happy place we have had on G+ will not come overnight. I have tried to kick around some reasons for that in the linked wordpress posting. Originally shared by Cade Johnson some thoughts on how communities bank "goodwill" and how this might affect social networks. I think G+ has no measure of the social capital present here. Value which will be largely destroyed. https://cadejohnson3.wordpress.com/2018/11/19/social-capital-and-social-networks/

Cross-commenting Universal Social Blog client idea

Cross-commenting Universal Social Blog client idea The prospect of migrating my posts and comment threads has focused my idea of what I really want in a social media application. And I think this is it: 1) New Blog entries are crossposted to multiple social media sites. 2) Comments from one site are cross-posted to other sites, so everyone participates in the same replicated comment thread. For example, if someone posts a comment to my pluspora post, replica quote comments are commented onto the G+ and Mastodon posts. 3) Local storage of my Blog, including comment threads. 4) Ability to migrate my Blog (including comment threads) to any new social media site/pod. For example, I decide to create a Mastodon account. Then, I make a Mastodon plugin which autoposts all my blog entries and comments on them to replicate the comment threads. What's so great about this? A) It makes it easier to participate in social media sites which may not have legs. For example, I'm wary of MeWe. B

A considerable chunk of Tumblr is comprised of these users or people who follow these users, and use Tumblr as a primary revenue source.... https://social.libre.fi/objects/1656dd4a-cef7-46e1-bc62-1cfc8d5eb58a https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/tumblr-for-ios-missing-in-app-store/ https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/tumblr-for-ios-missing-in-app-store/

The Facebook Era is Over

The Facebook Era is Over It's more than just the Plexodus ...Here are three predictions: There’s no Facebook Killer. There will be no single company or app that will take Facebook on and win.... The three most obvious alternatives people are turning to are: Private Messaging Platforms.... Vertical Social Networks and Subscription Content.... Highly Curated, Professional-Led Podcasts, Email Newsletters, Events, and Membership Communities...With awesome experiences and low switching costs, time spent will fan out among hundreds, if not thousands of different services.... Growth halts on the edges, not the core. Facebook’s prominence is eroding as the sources of creativity and goodwill that gave it magic, substance, and cultural relevance are quietly moving on. The reality is that Facebook stopped giving creators a return on their time a long time ago.... Big brands will be the last to leave.... https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/facebook-era-over-gina-bianchini https://www.linkedin.com

Alternative blogging platforms

Alternative blogging platforms Originally shared by Lars Fosdal Viable blogging platforms? If you want to get away from Blogger, and don't consider self-hosted solutions or WordPress hosting, what are the alternatives out there? Moves: Jeff Diver 's new home for "Imaginary Flower Gardens" Originally shared by Jeff Diver My G+ presence is being gently moved . The "Imaginary Flower Gardens" Collection, formerly [ https://plus.google.com/u/0/collection/UfSSWF ] is now on FLICKR: [ https://www.flickr.com/photos/thevictorian/albums ] and Pinterest [ bit.ly/ImaginaryVictorianGardens ] Comparisons welcome! I'm just getting used to these new environments. I think I like the FLICKR presentation best, so I'm concentrating on that for the time being. (Actually, I like the G+ option best, but....) I moved the Collection post by post. Perhaps Google will come up with a better option after a while. Please comment if you have advice to share. Thanks!

USB Type C Tester & Reviewer migrating to Medium

USB Type C Tester & Reviewer migrating to Medium Benson Leung, known for his extensive tests and reviews of USB Type C products, especially those falsely advertised as Type C on Amazon, is moving his USB Type-C Explained Collection from Google+ ( https://plus.google.com/collection/0Vdov ) to Medium: https://medium.com/@leung.benson Originally shared by Benson Leung Migrating to Medium. Here is the final draft of the chart Social Networking Platforms 2018.

Here is the final draft of the chart Social Networking Platforms 2018. As before, see the community spreadsheet for details of particular platforms. Note the interesting reorganization of the chart, plus a few additions and corrections. Many thanks for the insightful and helpful comments. Yay community! Intent of the chart is to provide a researched list of current viable platforms within a simple architectural framework. Three factors: (1) Closed/open standards and centralization/decentralization (which tend to go together). (2) Organized by the pacing and effort typical of user interaction within the communities on the platform. One special group singled out for use of tokens, rewards, tips to form an economic social climate. (3) Major/minor user base - shown by bold/light text, admittedly my quick swag at it, may need corrections. If this version is reasonably stable, I'll put future updates on a website to avoid cluttering up our stream here with minor changes. [Edit: Note a c

So, it has been almost 2 months, since the time of migrating to MeWe.

So, it has been almost 2 months, since the time of migrating to MeWe. There are some decent people on the site. However, there are those from Google Plus on MeWe, that have massive egos. When saying that, I noticed that it tends to be some of the self-published authors, who don't want to help support other authors. They believe that visiting another blogger/writer's website and blogs is "stealing traffic" from their group pages. Mind you, some of these same authors I speak of know NOTHING about font style or how to read a blog on Blogger. Yes, these people speak English. Judging from their appearance, they seem to be mostly self-published authors in their 50's and older, who are not tech savvy. I'm in my mid-30's and I'm not the most tech savvy either, but I know how to navigate a website and how to read a blog. Because they're too incompetent, they want to patronize me about how to arrange my Blogger page, that they DON'T want to visit anyway

So I know it says that GSuite enterprise G+ will continue, but who knows what that means? Here's my situation. I have a collection called The Future Is Pretty Rad, focusing on science, tech, sustainability, futurism, etc. I've managed to amass a solid 114k followers to that collection, and it's been a fun engaging group. It's really just an aggregated news site of cool stuff happening. While I've already migrated my photography activity to other platforms, not sure if there's anything I can do to preserve this collection? Is there a way to transfer it to a GSuite account I have for my VR company? As far as alternatives, I like MeWe, but, well, truth be told, it's just another platform that may very well disappear down the line, and not to keen on building another following and then starting all over again, which is why I'm leaning towards something like Tumblr or even, (gasp, gag, hold my nose closed) a Facebook page. Also, MeWe does not have public acce

My top nine

My top nine I have decided to create accounts everywhere and see which ones I end up using the most. I have downloaded apps where available or saved links to mobile web versions where not. So, how to track which are my favorites? I turned off all device notifications, including count badges, so as to not conflate frequent notices with my organic interest. Before I open an app, I drag it to the top left of the first page of icons. So, the order of icons ends up being an indicator of how recently I last checked in. Here’s my current top nine. To give you a feeling for this, I don’t think I have checked Twitter even once in the past week. Facebook I checked exactly once. Tootdon is slowly slipping down the list, as I get less and less enamored of its Twitter-like feeling. Meanwhile, MeWe has inched its way up to the number 2 position.
