This is not a good sign for Openbook social.

This is not a good sign for Openbook social. I signed up for the beta and the confirmation email they sent goes through MailChimp maillist services. I'm sorry but MailChimp is a market surveillance company. I did some research on mailchimp and they are very intrusive. Just look at their cookie policy and see that they allow themselves to suck up about 50 various data points from your computer, which is assimilated into a huge marketing conglomeration of databases. Umm, no thank you. https://mailchimp.com/legal/cookies/ How do you know it's mailchimp? Look at the link in the email. You'll see that the domain name is " list-manage.com " owned by mailchimp, with open-book a subdomain of mailchimp.

Another take on alternative platforms, coming from Tumblr refugees this time.

Another take on alternative platforms, coming from Tumblr refugees this time. We should take notice that now, with both g+ and tumblr making changes, there are really a lot of social network refugees looking for new homes. https://internationalhouseofblupjeans.tumblr.com/post/180778796271/masterpost-of-tumblr-alternatives https://internationalhouseofblupjeans.tumblr.com/post/180778796271/masterpost-of-tumblr-alternatives

A better, more positive Tumblr

As reported in the Verge and explained in their company blog post, Tumblr will be clearing out their adult content beginning this month in an effort to become a respectable blogging site. They seem to be doing this in a thoughtful but expedient manner. https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/3/18123752/tumblr-adult-content-porn-ban-date-explicit-changes-why-safe-mode https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr

Two interesting items here, Twitter's discussion limitations, but also a big page of all of google's sometimes fantastic castaway products. check out gcemetery.co Originally shared by Jason ON Have I mentioned how much Twitter sucks? Sure, it's great for broadcasting, but actually having a discussion? No.

Here is the final draft of the chart Social Networking Platforms 2018.

Here is the final draft of the chart Social Networking Platforms 2018. As before, see the community spreadsheet for details of particular platforms. Note the interesting reorganization of the chart, plus a few additions and corrections. Many thanks for the insightful and helpful comments. Yay community! Intent of the chart is to provide a researched list of current viable platforms within a simple architectural framework. Three factors: (1) Closed/open standards and centralization/decentralization (which tend to go together). (2) Organized by the pacing and effort typical of user interaction within the communities on the platform. One special group singled out for use of tokens, rewards, tips to form an economic social climate. (3) Major/minor user base - shown by bold/light text, admittedly my quick swag at it, may need corrections. If this version is reasonably stable, I'll put future updates on a website to avoid cluttering up our stream here with minor changes. [Edit: Note a c...

My take on g+ alternative and related platforms.

My take on g+ alternative and related platforms. Comments invited. A few startup open source platforms not included, such as Social Home, Pleroma, etc. Also Reddit isn't included because it isn't stream/feed oriented.

I like Diaspora, and as i was trying to figure out their sharing model, i noticed a couple misleading and confusing points they make. When you add someone to your list of contacts, you start following them. But instead of saying that, they present a popup that says you are now sharing with them. That's misleading and confusing. You start sharing with them only when they add you back, or if they manually visit your public profile (which they can do whether or not you have followed them.) [Edit to add: when you add someone to your contacts, it sends a notification to that person you are following them. Maybe that's what the platform is trying to say by "you are now sharing with them"]. Second, their term "Aspects" is weird. What an Aspect is is a sub-collection of your contacts that identify privacy permissions. Similar to g+ circles. They could call it a privacy group, but it's not a membership group, just a sub-grouping of your own contact list. I don...

Excellent list.

Excellent list. I don't think this has been posted here yet. Lists alternative products for google services. Also, interestingly enough it uses product hunt to gather upvotes, something i hadn't bothered to check yet, but seems interesting in itself. I don't know if it's just me becoming aware or not, but boy oh boy, the internet recently seems to be blossoming with new services. https://nomoregoogle.com https://nomoregoogle.com

I've been checking out the federated social networks. Here are some links i've found that provide brief observations about Diaspora, Friendica, and Hubzilla with a couple comments about Mastodon. Any observations you'd like to add? 1. My personal Friendica vs Diaspora breakdown so far https://diasp.org/posts/62bdc15037c2013698e1047d7b62795e 2.
