Quick Start on using Friendica

Quick Start on using Friendica Shelenn Ayres recently shared posted a series on the essentials of getting comfortable with Friendica. I like having tutorials in printed form - as they're much easier to skim through and use than swapping windows on a laptop, so I've pulled all these together as a PDF. It's pretty much identical to the originals apart from minor tweaks so the pagebreak are in reasonable places. This is recirculated with Shelenn's approval. I'm settling on Friendica as my new home, and this guide helped. Thanks Shelenn. https://www.dropbox.com/s/f2ropueobszkqcu/Friendica-Quickstart-by-Shelenn-Eyres.pdf?dl=0

The end is near! Come into the light. The latest round of G+ disruption appears to be in high gear. In a week you won't see notifications for my annoying comments on you posts :-) For my remaining 2 Followers on G+, please look my up elsewhere. Hello, regarding album archive :

Hello, regarding album archive : (I did use community search and my browser's find in page before posting this, but had trouble finding the information) I know the "photos from posts" album, along with "profil photos" and "scrapbook" will be deleted, but on top of that I have an additional 100 or so automagically created albums, all following a DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD naming scheme, that contain usually 1 photo/image, mostly from my G+ posts, sometimes from my Google Photos uploads, which I find very weird. There's no option to download all the album archive at once, and it's unclear whether they will be included in a Google Photos takeout (unnecessarily big AND I have to manually select the albums with no indication of their origin) Quoting the faq : "Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April."

A little test/demo/observation

A little test/demo/observation #1 Activity "here" has suddenly slowed, robots gone, I'm guessing the majority of people with a long sustained presence on G+ have already re-settled & are busy settling into new homes, new communities. #2 It feels rather nice to see, re-acquaint "old friends" from G+, and know that the mutual desire to stay connected goes far - be it to a pod/instance of Federation (e.g., Pluspora, where many G+ers are heading), or a blog platform or MeWe - which to be fair and honest, is exploding with new users from G+, with many photo and discussion groups, and many bells & whistles people love (e.g., chat and emojis) - but no real public visibility, and no real formatting options. But it is pretty and easy, like Facebook or G+ . So - this is not about me, except trying to share... I've been focused on salvaging hidden (album) images "here" and Collection photos which I posted only on G+ (and don't want to sift t

Do you use "OpenID"? Thinking this would be a useful shortcut for signing up in various Fediverse situations, I signed up using my Google+ profile url, which happened to be an OpenID. Hello all

Hello all, the instructions from Google say: "If you’re a G Suite customer, Google+ for your G Suite account should remain active. " Does this mean that to keep a G+ Community going, one could simply purchase G Suite with the Google Account used to create the Community?

I'm going to hear this from all my G+ friends who tried to warn me: "I TOLD YOU SO". I joined MeWe in December after hearing the news of G+ shutting down. I joined MeWe despite warnings about all the extremists and societal rejects of all sorts. I thought, the space is surely big enough to accommodate moderate mainstream liberal politics, right? WRONG. While MeWe claims they don't shadow ban, it's a big fat lie. Our humble little liberal politics group, is very active and growing, as were a number of other liberal and progressive politics groups. I just did a search for our group and it no longer is searchable. Up until a couple of weeks ago it was searchable. I searched for other liberal groups and there are only a couple still remaining out of gajillions of extremist political groups. It turns out that all one has to do is report a group for whatever made up reason and MeWe automatically removes your group from being searchable, thus starving the group from grow

Is there's a recent list of multi-platform sites (i.e., with desktop access, not just apps)?

Is there's a recent list of multi-platform sites (i.e., with desktop access, not just apps)? As the end of G+ is sooner than expected, and trying to find desktop friendly sites is a mess to find to try out. I simply can't use app sites (smartphone screens are too small to read type comfortably; and they're not friendly but for Twitter communication/microblogging).

Sold on one of the Federated Social Networks?

Sold on one of the Federated Social Networks? How did you choose? Mastodon has by far the most subscribers, but it is a "microblog." Friendica has fewer subscribers, but I think has been referred to as a "macroblog," perhaps more similar to G+. It looks as though "AGPLv.3" is the emerging standard. Should I steer clear of the others? Image from [ https://the-federation.info/#projects ] Click to enlarge.

Sorry for the other post, but here's a much more positive one. What if we all banded together to convince Google Plus to spin off Communities into its own service, thus keeping the groups we love? Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ Q: When is Google+ shutting down? A: April 2, 2019. Five months earlier than originally announced. March 7, 2019 for Google+ APIs , including Google+ Sign-in and integrations for web & mobile apps . https://support.google.com/plus/answer/9195133 https://developers.google.com/+/api-shutdown Q: Are any other Google services being shut down as well on April 2, 2019? A: No. This includes Gmail, Google Photos, Blogger, YouTube, Calendar, Google Drive, Google Docs, Hangouts, AdSense, and many, many other Google products which will NOT shut down on April 2, 2019. Q: Where should I go? A: There is no one answer. The Google+ Mass Migration community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most. Major alternatives are listed here: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Established_G%2B_Exodus_Communities Q How do I know where people are going? A: Some have used this form: https://goo

Another approach to a new distributed social network:

Another approach to a new distributed social network: It turns out that git has practically everything that's needed to act both as storage and protocol for a social network. Not only that, but it's very well-known within and used, deployed and maintained in the circles I navigate, it scales very well (see github), it's used for critical infrastructure (see kernel.org ), it provides history, it's distributed by nature, etc. It's got almost everything, but not quite everything needed. [Image & File Storage Features]

[Image & File Storage Features] As I get closer to the end of G+'s run, I'm more concerned about image storage in relation the posts I make. I do art, and I also work in virtual worlds (like Open Simulator) and in both cases I want to make posts that show images (and to a lesser extent videos) of both. Now using G+ has spoilt me in that regard, in that it was easy just to upload a copy of an image directly to the post, and there was no extra cost for storing that. This was important to me because I'm on a fixed income , and paying a subscription fee for storage is something I have to consider carefully (one reason I don't use Adobe's Cloud apps). It was possible to copy the URL of the images on G+ to share elsewhere. Google Photo complicated things in that after it was split from G+ ,if you uploaded more than one image you couldn't add individual descriptions for each. It was possible to do that in GPhoto, but that was only useful when you were in GPhoto,,

#Google+ #GooglePlus #Takeout #Shutdown #JSON #PostgreSQL I rarely do public posts this technical... I'm not sure I ever have but since the reality is that the G+ shutdown is happening, I wanted to share my thoughts on using Google Takeout to get my data. I'm also posting this to the Google+ Mass Migration Community in hope it might help someone else. ~ ~ ~ Let me give you a quick reason for this post. What I think pains many of us who really embraced G+ and to be honest, are very upset about this shutdown, is that we spend a LOT of time posting here. As of my last takeout archive on 2019-02-13 I have made 4237 posts since 2011-07-10 (you'll see how I know that later). That may seem like a lot but it really isn't compared to other people I know. The number isn't what's important, its my time and that is something that can't be quantified because time is invaluable. For that reason, the prospect of losing the results of nearly 8 years of my life spent h

Create your own social network?

Create your own social network? Instead of knocking somebody else's efforts, it is possible to create your own. Receive rather than dispense criticism! I wonder if we need more silos. Are we wasting our time creating or selecting from dinky walled environments instead of concentrating our collective efforts on reforming existing social networks? Are there any collective efforts organizing to reform Facebook, YouTube, etc.? We had the Early Access Community here on G+ which, though in house, worked fairly well. https://alternativeto.net/software/moosocial/

John Ward posted an in image (that I was forced to screenshot and manhandle because I couldn't find a way to effectively reshare it) that goes sort of in the direction that I'm thinking of. It is working in my development environment, and I'll be offering it in a PR to Discourse. Importing Friends+Me (perhaps also the eventual Google Community Takeout format?) into Discourse will be able to preserve both Google login and community content with continued ownership of that content in the new community for users who choose google login to their Discourse forum as at least one authentication method. ~I have been hacking away at an importer for several maker communities moving to forum.makerforums.info and there's also a bounty that a professional Discourse developer might be interested in, so between us it is likely to happen. Don't count on me (this is my first exposure to Ruby) but feel free to sweeten the bounty pot at https://meta.discourse.org/t/bounty-google-private-communities-export-screenscraper-importer/108029/11 if you want to make a profe

I have multiple G+ Communities which were created for work tasks and functions under my personal account before my organization joined G Suite for Education. I have been trying and trying to figure out how to get the ownership of the content switched to my work account, or alternatively to export and upload the data into a new community owned by the correct account. I've walked through the export process multiple times, but am still waiting on the download links from Google. I understand that can take a while, but for one of them it should be super tiny — a custom export just for one small mission-critical community page. I've been digging around online for info about how to do this, and I've also worked through our org's IT support folk (again multiple times). I must be missing something, right? I found a lot of discussion of tools to import the data to other places(MeWe, LifeCloud, Wordpress, Blogger, Medium, ...) but I don't see a criteria tool to help with a dec

Reading this discussion of MeWe, PlusPora and other alternatives, I'm thinking I'm not interested in investing my energy in another proprietary or niche platform unless (1) my friends are ALREADY there (2) It has some potential for mass appeal or (3) there's something else really fantastic about it. MeWe, PlusPora etc. don't seem to hit all those buttons. I'm active on Facebook on a Group, Things Mitch Wagner Saw. I have a blog at mitchwagner.com . I'm on Twitter, @mitchwagner. My blog automatically syndicates to Tumblr, mitchwagner.tumblr.com . The blog automatically generates an RSS feed of course, and a newsletter http://eepurl.com/YlKbH And I'm active on Reddit and getting active on Hacker News. All of those things are either nonproprietary -- not somebody else's platform -- or they have mass appeal. And that's enough to keep me busy.

While saying #farewellgoogleplus here some boring thoughts of mine

While saying #farewellgoogleplus here some boring thoughts of mine I've tried #mewe along with #pluspora 3 times and ended up deleting my accounts. I don't see point of this alternative social media thing on my way of using. I was using #googleplus because it was seo friendly and connected to my blogger and I didn't had #instagram back then. I've never had more than 900 followers and 5-10 likes on my best post in G+ ... I've never made any friends here or anything. At least in instagram my posts reach 40-50 people. In Twitter I have some interesting contacts like cast of Frasier and few great artists and at least in Facebook I have some family and arguable friends. What will I have on an alternative social media? In mewe there was already a semi naked girl who getting a lot of attention. Why people ever want a boring guy like me with landscape photos and renders? I think I'll let my G+ demise and don't sweat on a making everything from scratch in an alterna

In acest mod nu esti nevoit sa-ti stochezi pozele sau clipurile video in MeWe ci doar in Google Photos si postarea arata "curata".

DON'T PANIC

DON'T PANIC Please keep in mind that you can live your life without G+ or a G+ alternative. You may not like it, (I know I don't), but you can. Download your data. You can continue to look for a G+ alternative long after G+ closes their doors.

I've put together a site called Friend Xone which has groups, pages, forums, etc. It's nothing special, but it is an alternative to anyone who wants something like Facebook but without the spying and selling of your data. https://www.friendxone.com/ Note ** It was created for my family initially, but it is open to the public. https://www.friendxone.com/

Originally shared by Kent Crispin Well, I've been playing around with my blog ( mosqueeto.net ) and got the WP => diaspora and WP => mastodon plugins working -- it's really pretty nifty. I finally got around to opening up the blog for user registrations, and immediately got several from people I never heard of. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that... But while thinking about it, it occurred to me that a wordpress blog would be a fine place for a g+ community to migrate to. WP themes exist that are sort of like g+. There can be lots of registered users, and users can have assigned roles: administrator, editor, author, contributor, and subscriber. These seem like a rough superset of the roles that exist in g+ communities. Free hosting is available at wordpress.com , and there are endless alternatives for paid hosting....

Originally shared by Frank D The YouMe.Social Android app seems to be working. An announcement was made that improvements are coming in March. As I said before, I prefer YouMe over MeWe. The creator of the new social media platform, Jamez Frondeskias is trying to bring in more G+ like features, including communities. Please note: The only way to sign into the mobile app is with email & password so save yourself some grief when creating a YouMe account. Skip the Google/Facebook option. Use email instead. When you get to YouMe, look me up.

tl;dr Stop just complaining about MeWe, it's not productive , instead be sure to also start recommending something other than MeWe that works better. (edited the tl;dr: I don't mind complaints if they're used productively to point people to other places that work better. Complaining just because you can isn't productive to the people trying to figure out where to go, not where not to go) Ok community, let's play a game. People have split opinions about MeWe. Those that seem to like it like it for the familiarity of the system, the way it works, and the fact that it feels "complete"... ish anyway. It's a bareable... or really, so far, the only substantial replacement for G+, especially for communities. ( edit : that I know of ... which is where I'd like to be enlightened as well) Now the people who dislike it, and there's enough of them with legitimate concerns that are really vocal about it on every post about MeWe ... instead of yet agai

Action: Content Reuse Licensing of your G+ contributions

Action: Content Reuse Licensing of your G+ contributions A few weeks ago, Filip H.F. Slagter posted a "Licensing details for republication of textual content submitted by me to Google+". It provides permission, under specific scope for others to archive his work on Google+: https://plus.google.com/112064652966583500522/posts/atqNXYS4FSp This is an excellent idea, and I encourage others to do this. There are a number of questions as to what license you should use, and how you should apply it. I've been thinking about this, and am going to suggest a basic approach. The TL;DR: Using the CC BY-ND-NC license should be a safe minimum start, add it to your pinned SignalFlare post, your G+ "About" page, and an off-G+ location. The Creative Commons licenses are a well-designed, widely-used, and well-understood set of licenses. FiXato is using one of them. The full set is listed and described here: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/ Considerations For the purp

CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF MEWE AHEAD

CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF MEWE AHEAD I think I know the main problem of MeWe. It's Mark Weinstein. Everything about him. His strange obsession with Facebook, his insistence toward the Libertarian idea of free speech, and his awful business sense. Mewe, while not completely original, is still a pretty cool concept. I like getting into groups to talk and chat about things that interests me because it's fun. This is what a social network should be about. This is the only reason why people join social networks, to have fun, talk, share pictures, etc. And yet Mark Weinstein talks about everything BUT the fun aspects of MeWe. He'll talk about privacy, which is great but not a feature. He'll talk about Facebook's faults. He'll talk about MeWe Pro. He'll talk about custom emoji packs. He'll talk about being a free speech proponent (who cares). He'll talk about "the good guys". He'll talk about MeWe as if it's a revolution (LOL). He'll talk a

Still need to merge the Gist's README into the existing one from Plexodus-Tools, and update some of the documentation though, but at least all further development on it should occur in the Plexodus-Tools repo, rather than spread over both projects. I need to hurry up though for it to be of any use, as the APIs will be turned off in less than 18 days... Time passes by way too quickly... So, keep following https://github.com/FiXato/Plexodus-Tools/ to keep track of its progress. ¹: Blogger Google Plus Comments CLI retrieval tool Gist: h

What we have found is a platform that offers much of what we wanted in the original G+ communities. Some of the advantages of Discord are: 1. Customization of Roles 2. Pinning multiple messages (posts) 3. To all refugees from Google Plus

Originally shared by David Anderson To all refugees from Google Plus I am moving to both MeWe and Pluspora; Over time, I'll settle on one of them. Would love to follow any of you from my circles if you're on either. HMU in the comments or PM me with your contact info on either MeWe or Pluspora. I'll specifically be tagging some of you so that you see this post. I'm saddened, traumatized, and empty at the prospect of leaving/losing Google Plus. Here's a toast to the great conversations and support we've had on G+. MeWe developers are planning on adding G+ features soon, such as Circles, Collections. MeWe seems to have a look similar to G+. Pluspora is a Pod within the Diaspora federation and is composed of G+ refugees. Still a newbie at learning to find people and similar interests. To anyone worried about replicating the function of "Circles" on another network -- as I myself was -- the closest thing I've found are MeWe's "Groups." they can function exactly like your cirrcles -- where followers can "view only," with comment privileges, or you can set it up so that followers can also post their own items to it. Just posting this as an FYI -- as for me, myself, I've been really concerned about how to replicate the way I've become accustomed to sharing here on the Ploos. If you want to compare the two, my MeWe acct is https://mewe.com/i/reverendjesus ; you can compare my groups to the communities on this profile.

Image Download Issues

Image Download Issues FWIW - I set out to download some G+ photos (directly from my G+ collection) in order to relocate them. I got one and then the next several only partially download and I get "Failed- Network Error". So... I hope I get to all the remaining images I want to (easily) download and relocate - not many left, but it feels like the machine is getting wobbly. I have no idea if there's any impact on "takeout" (or if it's a result of high demand), but just wanted to note this. "I see things" - including this - as Google + functionality (from widgets to downloads) sputters and fades away. :( If this is a harbinger (along with all the other bumps and fits)... Just another reminder IMM to finish up packing and saving ASAP if still doing it, as the end is not only near, it is here. Grab what you want and what you can!! Nice (but sad) to see so many people and groups already safely landed in a new safe haven, hopefully more responsive to h

DO NOT NEGATIVELY COMMENT ON THREADS WHERE PEOPLE ARE ANNOUNCING THEIR DESTINATIONS, NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK OF THE SITE THEY ARE MOVING TO. I have started removing comments, I'll start to ban/block soon. If someone has made a decision and is announcing that decision, the time for discussion or persuasion is over. Wish them well, wish them good luck, don't say anything negative about the site they choose or the person for choosing it. If you want to Private Message the person, off the community, and explain your point of view, that's up to you . Here, we respect people's choices. If someone says they are going to move to FaceBook, I consider that a major mistake, but I will not say that in their Signal Flare message and I will not try to change their mind after they have announced their plans. Be civil and allow people to make their own choices or leave the community because we don't need badgering of people who are announcing their final destinations. I hope thi

So G+ consumer is shutting down, yet our Gmail accounts will remain.

So G+ consumer is shutting down, yet our Gmail accounts will remain. Obviously, no matter how hard one tries, they'll sooner or later be forced in one way or another to support massive companies like Google. I simply don't see any way around it. This got me thinking about shutting down G+ consumer version as a cost vs benefits issue. G+ shuts down vs Google still retaining a majority of emails where they can basically get whatever usage they need from the accounts themselves, without having to continue putting money into the consumer site. Am I wrong? Am I simplifying this, or something? Let me know your thoughts.
