G+ has been a great place to visit for nearly a decade.

G+ has been a great place to visit for nearly a decade. As we fly apart in all directions, may we find each another again in better times. Goodbyte to all! Final #signalflare (no changes from before). Originally shared by Derek Lichter Other social network presence(s): * Friendica: ozdreaming@social.isurf.ca * Reddit: ozdreaming I will update this as I try other services. My hope is to set up a Hubzilla node at home, but that will take a longer block of time than I have handy now. (I do have a Facebook account -- I never log in, but if you message me I will get the notification.) #signalflare #GooglePlusExodus #Plexodus #GooglePlusMigration #GPlusExodus #GPlusMigration

Plexodus Tools -- data migration

Plexodus Tools -- data migration Originally shared by Filip H.F. “FiXato” Slagter Screenshots of the work-in-progress console frontend for Plexodus-Tools running in Termux on Android Spent some more time today working on the frontend for the Plexodus-Tools Bash scripts. So far I've tested it on #macOS El Capitan + #iTerm2 + #Homebrew, and #Android + #Termux, and Ubuntu GNU Linux via SSH, all running a recent version of #Bash Screenshots show the main menu, the settings menu, the Setup output, the self-update output, Takeout archive data file extraction, and URL extraction from the Takeout data files. All screenshots were taken from my Android phone. As mentioned in my previous #PlexodusTools update, installation instructions are available at https://github.com/FiXato/Plexodus-Tools/blob/master/README.md#installation-instructions Just a few more days left, before part of these scripts become useless... Still have some more archiving and data analysis to do myself too... #GooglePlus ...

Working with exported data

Working with exported data Originally shared by Filip H.F. “FiXato” Slagter Progress on Takeout Google+ Stream Posts Export Tool I've been making some progress with the Google Data Takeout conversion part of my #PlexodusTools project. I can currently let one of the scripts parse all the JSON files in the extracted Takeout/Google+ Stream/Posts directory, and convert the JSON to simplified HTML files in an (imho) logical directory structure, based on what kind of posts it is, and what its privacy setting is: data/output/html/exported_activities/limited/communities/$communityID-$communityName/$userID data/output/html/exported_activities/limited/events/$eventID-$eventName/$userID data/output/html/exported_activities/limited/posts data/output/html/exported_activities/limited/posts/$userID/circles/$circleName data/output/html/exported_activities/limited/posts/$userID/collections/$collectionID-$collectionName data/output/html/exported_activities/limited/posts/$userID/users/$userId-$userN...

Well worth following

Well worth following Originally shared by Filip H.F. “FiXato” Slagter Google+ Exodus Collection If you want to follow just my posts about the shutdown of Google+, my ongoing development of the Plexodus-Tools set of export / migration utilities, and other news related to the Google+ Exodus, but aren't interested in my other content such as my photography and multimedia interests, you can either follow my account and unfollow individual Collections, or solely follow my Google+ Exodus Collection. :) Since it's at 1936 followers, I'm kinda curious if we can reach 2000 before this place is torched to the ground. ;) #Plexodus #Google #GooglePlus #GPlus #GooglePlusExodus #GooglePlusShutdown #Goofle #2April2019 #FollowFriday #ShamelessPlug #MassMigration #SocialMedia

Google Groups no longer a viable alternative for large communities?

Google Groups no longer a viable alternative for large communities? Note, this is based on the experience and report of a single¹ Google Groups community, so don't take it at face value, but rather use it as a consideration, especially since another Group² reports not experiencing this issue. From the original topic¹ on Google Groups: «After speaking with Google support, it appears that Google has changed the rules on large groups (500-1000 users) to implement a deliberate decision (that has apparently not yet been announced) to not support large groups. The change is to simply block messages based on some unspecified criteria, and the rejection message cites spam but is not actually spam related (and the messages do not appear in a spam folder where we could try to recover them, they are just deleted), and the rejection message suggests making the group moderated (but the group is already moderated). Google support wasn't entirely clear on the details, but said that Google wil...

Another service biting the dust because of GPlus shutdown

Another service biting the dust because of GPlus shutdown Desktop Notifications , a browser plugin / Android app for sharing notifications among multiple Android devices and desktop browsers, is also shutting down, in part due to the Google Plus shutdown. The app started as a research project at the Human Computer Interaction group ( http://www.hcilab.org ) at the University of Stuttgart (Germany) , but soon became a project loved and used by many Android users. When asked/suggested in the comments if the termination of the service is due to the research project ending, Dominik Weber , PhD student in the Human-Computer Interaction and Cognitive Systems group at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and developer of the app, responded: "Pretty much, yes. There's also the fact that Google will shut down Google+, the Google+ API and the legacy Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) API in the coming months. Desktop Notifications was built on top of these services and would pretty much requ...

GitHub repositories are still limited to 1GB

GitHub repositories are still limited to 1GB I’m trying to help out one of the #googleplusexodus #3dprinting communities, makers of Eric Lien’s HercuLien and Eustathios printers, archive years of information onto a static site to preserve it. It’s about 2GB of content, mostly images, but 7.3MB of text too, so not insignificant. It’s perfect for github pages, except: 1. GitHub still limits its repositories to 1GB total content 2. GitHub pages still don’t honor lfs, as of last report I found when it was marked won’t fix, and the answer was essentially “well don’t do that then.”... Feedback provided regarding Google Takeout archive issues:

Originally shared by Filip H.F. “FiXato” Slagter Feedback provided regarding Google Takeout archive issues: Because I am still running into some issues with cropped filenames, even when exporting to a zip64 archive, I've filed two tickets through Google Feedback ( https://www.google.com/tools/feedback/reports?hl=en or rather the Send Feedback form on takeout.google.com ). I'm sharing them here to make them public record, so others are aware these issues can occur, and perhaps can also provide feedback to Google in case they're also affected. Regarding Contacts with periods in their name: When a Contact's (first?) name contains (ends with?) a period, the exported VCF tends to lack the .vcf file extension. For instance, I had a contact named: First name: 'wolf.' Last name: 'nanaki' The exported vcf however was named: "Takeout/Contacts/Chat4All/wolf.nanaki", no .vcf file extension at all. This makes exporting specific file types only from an arch...
