One more #signalflare …

One more #signalflare … Originally shared by Ade Oshineye As I sit here waiting for the Google Takeout process to generate one last backup of everything I've posted here I've finally started that newsletter I've been talking about for ages: https://tinyletter.com/acnpov The title comes from the phrase that's in my Google+ profile photo. It's going to be an irregular continuation of my Google+ stream. I was going to finish up by paraphrasing Dr Seuss: "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" but then I found this article which did a better job of conveying the mixture of feelings at times like this: https://thoughtcatalog.com/ari-eastman/2014/04/why-i-hate-the-phrase-dont-cry-because-its-over-smile-because-it-happened/ Time to say "bye" and put Google+ on a plinth alongside Jaiku and Buzz. We tried. http://tinyletter.com/acnpov

Keep Your Takeouts

Keep Your Takeouts And folks, keep your Google+ Exporter installed, because its database contains all those articles you downloaded, which might be worth to be transferred to archive.org - Internet Archive later on. http://archive.org

#signalflare Originally shared by European Union Time to move to a new location Our final post on Google+ We have been on Google+ since late 2011 and its been a great site to share news and information on the European Union. However like everything, it is now a time to change where we will be located due to Google+ shutting down. We looked at three potential homes, these being MeWe, Pluspora and YouMe Social. The criteria we used was the ability for people to view the content both within the site as well as outside, the general political stance of the site itself, the ability to establish collections and communities [or similar], the location of the site, the potential to expand our followers within the European Union etc. After assessing all three sites, we ruled out US based MeWe despite having about 50,000 Google+ members due to its location, its restriction on public viewing of our content, the political stance of its owners and the required features we are looking for. US based Pl...

one more #signalflare Originally shared by Daniel Suarez The (Google+) End is Nigh... We're a little over a week from the G+ apocalypse. If you've enjoyed my posts here on Google+ over the years, please consider following me on Medium ( https://medium.com/@Daniel_Suarez ), where I'll be doing more and longer posts in coming months. Likewise, you can follow me on Twitter ( https://twitter.com/itsDanielSuarez ), Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/DanielSuarezAuthor ), or go to my web site, www.daniel-suarez.com , to get news about my books and upcoming events. I'll also be choosing another new social media platform in coming months (perhaps Mastadon or a yet-to-be-launched service like Darcy). However, with my new book, Delta-v , launching in a few weeks (on 4/23), now's not the time for me to be sifting through new social networks. So in the meantime, if you'd like to stay in touch, and if you want me to ping you when I finally set up elsewhere, send an email t...

Mewe App Permissions

Mewe App Permissions Hmm, interesting list of permissions required … hmm, contacts, oops? I prefer "social" media sites, which work ok in a smartphone browser, e.g. the DuckDuckGo browser and shun "specialized" apps. Originally shared by stefan holzhauer HAHAHA! So MeWe, the network that honors privacy so much and hates Facebook, just downloads all of your contacts just as Facebook does. I can't stop laughing. https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/40444/ https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/40444/

Chronological Streams

Chronological Streams One of the nice things about Diaspora (I'm on pluspora.com BTW) is that you get chronological streams. That's what I missed here at G++ from the beginning on. What does "chronological" mean? If you scroll through your notification list until you see the last article you looked at earlier, you know that you saw them all and didn't miss one. Because they are listed chronologically and not randomly as Google thought to be a clever way of doing this. http://pluspora.com

Some Background Information on Diaspora

Some Background Information on Diaspora If you’re new from Google+ and are wondering what diaspora is all about and what inspired the creation of this distributed, federated social network, it was this talk by Eben Moglen. Four college students in the audience were inspired to set themselves the task of creating a decentralised social network as a summer project. A Kickstarter campaign followed, and then the really hard work began… Source: https://pluspora.com/posts/26515 https://invidio.us/watch?v=QOEMv0S8AcA&t=2m2s
