Another service biting the dust because of GPlus shutdown

Another service biting the dust because of GPlus shutdown
Desktop Notifications, a browser plugin / Android app for sharing notifications among multiple Android devices and desktop browsers, is also shutting down, in part due to the Google Plus shutdown.
The app started as a research project at the Human Computer Interaction group (http://www.hcilab.org) at the University of Stuttgart (Germany), but soon became a project loved and used by many Android users.

When asked/suggested in the comments if the termination of the service is due to the research project ending, Dominik Weber , PhD student in the Human-Computer Interaction and Cognitive Systems group at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and developer of the app, responded:
"Pretty much, yes. There's also the fact that Google will shut down Google+, the Google+ API and the legacy Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) API in the coming months. Desktop Notifications was built on top of these services and would pretty much require a complete rewrite to continue running."

So, apart from looking for an alternative to Google Plus, some users will also find themselves looking for an alternative to this excellent service. :(
Regardless, I'd like to thank Dominik for providing it, and wish him success in his future research endeavours. :)

Desktop Notifications for Android will be discontinued on February 28, 2019

Dear all,

l will get right to the point: We will discontinue the Desktop Notifications service at the end of February. I plan to create a post with more details in the first week of February.

Planned timeframe: We will push a final update for the Android app and Chrome extension in the last week of February. The update will remove all functionality from the app/extension and offer a one-click uninstall. The servers will be shut down on February 28. Account/device data will be deleted.

  1. Sad news.. Well.. seems that the Kdeconnect can be an decent alternative for this app and browser add-on.

  2. Martina Neumayer the only thing I've found better than KDEconnect is Dell MobileConnect.
The KDE app has a few features that I like better. Dell Mobile Connect is for Windows 10 only.

  3. Pushbullet is also a decent alternative IIRC, though it's been a while since I've tried using that for sharing notifications.

  4. eric peacock Well.. The only problem with it is, that is windoze-only software. I don't use for example win systems at all.. so, for me DMC is simply useless.
