Thank you, this was new to me.
ReplyDeleteWhy? That service is useful outside G+. Damn it.
ReplyDeleteBitlinks is an excellent substite, maybe superior. Try it!

Michel Laine We are reassured by Google that old goo.gl URL links will continue to function.
ReplyDeleteJeff Diver Yeah, until they just don't
ReplyDeleteJeff Diver let’s just say that following Google’s 2018 behavior, most people should take said assurances with a grain of salt...
ReplyDeleteWow, this was announced a whole year ago, and I never heard about it before!
ReplyDeleteSallie Alys Montuori "Announced" like when they were gonna tear Arthur Dent's house down. Beware the jaguar.
ReplyDeleteThat was announced/leaked a while back I think. Maybe it was just the API. I thought it was already kaput.
ReplyDelete(Heh you'd think by now I'd remember to check for comments)
ReplyDeleteSallie Alys Montuori yes, more than a year ago, and it's been stated on top of the site ever since. So people actually using can't really have missed it.
ReplyDeleteKim Nilsson Yeah, and I'm not one of that category. I tried goo.gl briefly when it was still new, but I have a strong dislike for obscured links, so I never used it much, and quit entirely when I stopped using Twitter. I'm glad I finally found out just in time to review all 23 links I had there!
ReplyDeleteMy main use was ... Google Ngram and Book search links posted to G+, where the source URLs broke g+'s parser.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius I'd be interested in hearing if you have better results with bitly. I tried a huge URL the other day. Bitly ate it right up and spat out a nice short substitute that I could modify to suit myself.

Jeff Diver There's own Richard Stallman uses through GNU. I prefer that.
ReplyDeleteopensource.com - 3 open source alternatives to Bitly | Opensource.com
Edward Morbius Thanks! Hadn't heard of these!
ReplyDeleteJeff Diver there's sadly a fairly high risk that email with bitly links will be tagged as spam, since there are so many spammers using it that it has frequently been blacklisted.
ReplyDeleteKim Nilsson Thanks for the tip! I'll investigate the alternatives.
ReplyDeleteBackground explanation According to [ https://seo-hacker.com/url-shortening-tools-2018/ ]
ReplyDelete"The reason behind the discontinuation of this popular service is the result of Google shifting its focus to a new service called Firebase Dynamic links, which is a new technology that aims to create Dynamic Links, which is seen as the future of how link building would be in the next few years."
firebase.google.com - Documentation | Firebase
Jeff Diver yup, sadly FDL isn't for every day users, but for developers. The process of creating an url is extremely complicated, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteKim Nilsson So I see by following (or should I say trying to follow) some of the easy-peasy directions for setting up your own link shortener back there on links on Edward Morbius' post.
ReplyDeleteAs a non-coder I look at them and say, "Whoa, there! Things look complicated!" Open source code is just great, if you know what to do with it and don't have too many questions, like "What's php?"
