Someone mentioned OPenbook earlier?

Someone mentioned OPenbook earlier? Is that where people are heading? Or MEWE? Or both? Thank you. The ending of Google + has taught me that I do need to take time to enjoy some of the online communities as opposed to staying completely focused on client work.

  1. Individuals are making individual decisions. Your best bet is to directly ask your key contacts where they're planning to go.

We're collecting forwarding information for a few thousand higher-profile Plussers, and that will be available at https://social.antefriguserat.de after the shutdown. But really, just asking the crowd (most of whom aren't going to see or respond to your post) isn't useful.

Who are your top ten contacts? Where are THEY going?

That's where you want to be.

  2. Edward Morbius Thank you. Outside of a couple people I follow I haven't been in touch with a lot personally. And now that Google + is ending it has made me realize the lack. Most of my time is spent working on clients' brand pages, and other social media. So this is really a new beginning for me to try and interact more as "me" and not just for business. So I am only now learning about some of things like Openbook, Weme, etc.

  3. Cathy Mosley In my personal case, most of the people I'm more interested in following will at least have a presence on Diaspora (mostly Pluspora), though they're scattered all over the place.

An alternate strategy is to realise that you can create accounts at multiple locations and see what works for you.

I've got major concerns over MeWe: culture, business, leadership, and more. Most other options are fairly neutral.

But really, it's your call here.

  4. Edward Morbius I am hoping to try several different avenues - now that I know they exist. We the sheer amount of advertising I saw about MeWe, and some of the reviews I have looked at, I am iffy about it, but will poke my toe in the water.

I am guessing that this is the same Diaspora we are talking about? joindiaspora.com - JoinDiaspora* I had bookmarked it a while back, but been back to it yet.

  5. Cathy Mosley Yes, or rather, that's one Diaspora "pod". There are others, and I'd recommend taking a hard look at https://pluspora.com/, run by Di Cleverly and David Thiery (both plussers, though I'm having trouble tagging them right now). It has 12,000 members, mostly Plussers.

  6. Openbook is being quite late - they are not making it in time to provide smooth transition for G+ communities. They only started closed alpha so far.
I don't know absolute numbers, but it looks like MeWe was a winner in this race, despite all controversies around it. And PASHpost started to take off recently.
I wish Openbook all best, but they got strong concurrents while they are still getting ready for proper launch.

  7. Cathy Mosley Hello, I have been on MeWe since October and I will say it is no G+. But they listen to the members. They actually answered feedback requests. They are the biggest of our options and they are working around the clock on their servers to accommodate the mass exodus from G+ and many from F-book. They sent memos to everyone that there will be temporary outages as they upgrade their platform. I dont see how the smaller ones will be able to handle this. And MeWe only has 30 employees!!😅 I give them credit. MeWe is different, but if all goes well they will be on top. The people are very in gauged with the members, and that is something many are not use to. Feels good!! Hope this helps.

  8. Cathy Mosley I think you'll find a majority went to MeWe.

  9. I have to say OpenBook has been fun so far. We alpha users really feel like we're helping build something new. Feels like early days of Google+.

It has limited features right now but we've seen continual small improvements already, and they have a roadmap of things being worked on.

  10. Edward Morbius Thank you for the information on Diaspora. Just joined, and tagged the #GPlusrefugee hashtag.

  11. Christopher Gaul I have also signed up with MeWe. Now that I have committed myself to taking more time to explore I am happily willing to try the different sites.

  13. Thank you to everyone on the recommendations! If nothing else the ending of Google + reminded me how much I really missed the community interaction. Far too many years ago I was very active in several usernet and email groups, but as those faded, and I started running my own business, all of that fell by the wayside and I didn't go looking for anything to replace them. Thank you again and hope to see you at the other sites.

  14. Christopher Gaul Thank you. Just put my application in.

  15. Cathy Mosley Just so you know, they are upgrading their servers so they can handle the amount of people flooding in and there will be outages from time to time. Currently they are upgrading the phone app. So it may be glitch.

  16. Donald Schaefer Thank you for the head's up.

  17. Cathy Mosley I just made sure you got approved. Welcome.
Check the hashtags post in that group. You can click on the listed tags to find MeWe help and tips etc.

  18. Donald Schaefer that's a good point. Currently MeWe is a bit of a victim of their own success. Users were already flooding in from Facebook due to their various issues and treatment of customers and privacy violations etc.
Then the Google Plus news dropped and a whole new, additional stream of new users started flooding in.
Next they built a data migration app for Plus users which lead to thousands of users uploading gigs of data for their servers to much on. The overall impact has been to put a heavy load on their systems and network. A load which IMO they've handled admirably considering they don't have the mega resources like Google or Facebook to throw at the problem.
Right now the key word for Plussers going anywhere, not just MeWe, is patience while they deal with all the new activity.

  19. Christopher Gaul Thank you! I look forward to learning more. I wish their tech team good luck - it sounds like they are in for a long, long week!

  20. Christopher Gaul Indeed, and not only that they were thrown a curve ball when G+ decided to cut the time in half and shut down in April. I also tip my hat to MeWe for burning that midnight oil.
