That's a huge success for Jamez Frondeskias!

Time to move to a new location

Our final post on Google+

We have been on Google+ since late 2011 and its been a great site to share news and information on the European Union. However like everything, it is now a time to change where we will be located due to Google+ shutting down.

We looked at three potential homes, these being MeWe, Pluspora and YouMe Social.

The criteria we used was the ability for people to view the content both within the site as well as outside, the general political stance of the site itself, the ability to establish collections and communities [or similar], the location of the site, the potential to expand our followers within the European Union etc.

After assessing all three sites, we ruled out US based MeWe despite having about 50,000 Google+ members due to its location, its restriction on public viewing of our content, the political stance of its owners and the required features we are looking for.

US based Pluspora was also ruled out due to the current inability of establishing communities and collections, despite being the second largest of the three.

The only one that is based within the European Union, has communities, collections, allows for posts to be seen not only by members but also by the general public outside the site, and has a more neutral stance (neither right nor left) is YouMe Social.

It is the smallest of the three, however we see the potential of its expansion within the European Union being the greatest of the reviewed sites. It is not perfect however as a site which is barely 3 months old, it also has the closest feel to the current Google+.

Once YouMe Social introduces the ability of importing our content from Google+, we will be moving all the posts here and in the European Union community to the site.

So, thank you for following us for the last 7 years and thank you for your comments, your +1s and your support.

To Google, thank you for giving us the opportunity of being here and for a great social media site.

We will delete this site and the European Union community late on April 1st

Our new home is here: https://www.youme.social/-europeanunion

Thanks for supporting Google Plus and sharing European Commission (and allied entities) content here over the last seven plus years... I'll look at YouMe as a potential replacement for Google Plus based on your move there.

You really should have looked at posting on the fediverse (Mastodon, Pleroma etc). You could even run your own instance.

I'm still hoping that'll happen at some point, even if it's just cross posting from other services.

Worth noting btw is that while Pluspora is US-based, it's only a single node/instance in the broader Diaspora* network.
To sort Diaspora* pods/instances by country, you can use https://podupti.me
Collections are indeed still lacking, though you can come a long way by using unique pre- or suf-fixed hashtags, for instance #Brexit12345 or #12345Brexit where 12345 could for instance be your userID, or username, and Brexit would be the 'collection' name. Unfortunately there's nothing stopping others from using that hashtag.
Likewise, you could take the same approach to Communities, and try to reserve a pre/suffixed hashtag for your 'community' and instruct your users to use that in their posts, though you won't be able to remove posts from that hashtag.
So, yeah, both are kinda hacky workarounds, but I thought I'd share them nevertheless.

Alternative federated solutions that do have Communities though, would be #Friendica and #Hubzilla, both of which are fairly established federated networks in the same vein as Diaspora*.

The G+MM community here has some useful references for all mentioned networks: https://plus.google.com/communities/112164273001338979772/

Though as that resource will soon cease to exist with the shutdown of consumer G+, I'll reference searches on the G+MM community export blog maintained by +Jeff Diver :

MeWe's Groups are a pretty good replacement for G+ communities. If YouMe won't get users, please consider MeWe. It has so many more users and things are improving every month, more content and users.

Although what I was looking for in a social network was something different, after doing a comparative analysis I came to the same conclusion and opened an account in YouMe.Social, where I am very satisfied, not only because it looks like Google+, has incorporated some of its features and has planned others, but also for additional features and immediate and personalized attention.
