I never really had much of a chance to use Google+ because I had only recently rediscovered it after making a profile years earlier. I was starting to look into building some Communities on it. It seemed like it would work for my needs. I think it is so sad that it is going away right when so many people are leaving Facebook. Seems like such an unfortunate cosmic coincidence...

Sorry, just wanted to get that off my chest.

  1. It's very sad. It feels almost like losing an old friend.

  2. Many agree: it's sad. Maybe also short-sighted (or just as usual, indifferent to users). Because as you say, FB is losing people due to distrust and all its lying. I won't say "go here" or "go there", but for sure MeWe, the diaspora* pods, Flickr, and others are benefitting from a tidal wave of now-homeless G+ users, many of whom called it their main or only home. One tip: while learning about &/or trying/settling in at a "replacement" spot (a misnomer), use tags (in general) and specifically #gplusrefugee both to set up your interests (which will show in your feed on e.g, Pluspora) and let people find you easily. There are also active refugee/ expat groups to help & welcome.

Life goes on, absolutely, and with a lot of energy in some new homelands, and a resurgence of use in others. No one place does it all as G+ does/did. Some say it's the beginning of a new era across social media. We'll see...... Happy travels.

  3. Michael Fenichel Well since I wasn't an active user yet, nobody will be wondering where I went. :) I was mainly interested in the Communities feature. FB groups is a horrid tool. I was just experimenting and about to get some groups launched when they announced the imminent demise of Google+. This happened to me with Google Health too. Starting to feel like it's me!

Been looking at groups.io for some groups I want to start. It seems like it will work pretty well for a lot of what I want to do. I am also curious to see what they have planned for Google groups, which I have been using for a few years now. Seems they are going to be doing some housecleaning of that.

  4. Pamela Conroy Well, I've done a lot of preaching about the fact that everybody has different wants and needs (and online goals). Nothing's perfect, though for many G+ was, in its prime. Read some of the posts on this community, going a month back - some sage advice on options, for bloggers, photographers, marketers, and "social". BION, many seem to have gone to (or returned to) FB groups, and some are saying it's bliss. Many others are focused on blog platforms or social platforms (be it twitter or new things) in order to be findable in the first place. Hard to predict even Google search, these days. Will they algorithm-up their enterprise users, their only focus since killing off consumers after they served their purpose? Stay tuned. See whats out there and please read what some of the big movers & shakers, developers and community hosts, are saying and mostly by now, doing. Good luck!
