No one place is a replacement as it will have 1/3 the familiar people, and be divided up by interests and desire to be involved in "groups" vs. post publicly and a whole lot of considerations, like your main goals and whether the people you want to be connected to will be there too.
My latest - if you like Facebook you'd like MeWe, a lot of influx, especially younger generations, their target. Pretty interface, very chat/emoji centric. Good people, also some not-so-palatable ones lurking in the garden. YMMV.
If you're more independent and especially a content creator/blogger, you may be happier in a Federation pod with connections and features you want. Or combine that with a blog-promoting platform. If you just want forum-type conversations and/or selective "circles" to share interests with, try Pluspora, easy-entry into a large G+ refugee community.
In fairness, there are big and quick-growing refugee/expat groups in MeWe (for chatters & groups) and Flickr (for serious photography). So... (last time?) "YMMV"
If you're still seriously wondering what to do, with no commitment... with about 17-18 days to go, IMM the best thing you can do (besides saving anything you want from here mighty quick!) is to try out both MeWe, if you're leaning towards it (and have read the warnings) and try one of the diaspora* pods. ("Use tags!")
I've said about all I can say, and have... Good luck. Read more on this forum to get a sense of what you can do with what's left of G+ data (if that's of interest) and many tales of the New Worlds beyond G+. Best luck!
President Cherry-2 There is no one size fits all replacement. Your particular use case will determine what you need. I tried MeWe and Blogger before deciding on Discord. It suits my communities needs almost perfectly.
I'm enjoying Diaspora. There's a good bunch of people transferred over from Google+ (particularly on the Pluspora pod) and some enjoyable discussion.
I actually like the simpler interface, just wish we could edit posts and that there was a better app, but hopefully that's coming soon as the API is all but finished.
I hated it and deleted my account. Now I'm on Diaspora and Mastodon (Fosstodon server) which I both enjoy but I find the experience very different from G+.
I have mixed feelings about MeWe. I’m there, and have been for a while now to maintain connections with people from g+. It is workable and good enough for me when g+ dies in the short and mid term. It hasn’t stopped me investigating other options like pluspora or friendica. Even twitter.
As has been noted repeatedly, the bias is overt, overwhelming, and both tacitly and explicitly encouraged by MeWe leadership. MeWe's own corporate advisors have described the situation as troubling. The rates and prominance of this activity are entirely unlike that seen on platforms which take a proactive stance against hate, of which I have and have shared direct quantified evidence. And as Yonatan Zunger has noted, an absolutist "free speech" policy preserves it only for those already shielded and empowered, not for the underprivileged and vulnerable lacking access to speech.
And that's before recognising that MeWe has no viable financial model, and that its direct solicitation and recruiting of extremist groups is likely both a consequence and exacerbation of this. old.reddit.com - MeWe: A trip report
Greg Mee No, for the most part, literally unlike them.
FB and Twitter could do far better than they have, but the content I'm describing and which is manifestly and overwhelmingly present on MeWe, and acytively courted by its CEO, doesn't have anywhere near the same prominance on those sites.
And yet, even with that diminished representation, it still quite clearly results in real world impacts to third parties, as yesterday's news out of New Zealand makes abundantly clear. The terrorist had both FB and Twitter accounts, as well as using other, less-regulated platforms, including 8chan.
Epistemic systems require effective and appropriate hygiene systems. MeWe is founded on a rejection of that principle. It will reap the consequnces of that. Unfortunately, so will innocent bystanders.
I'm not. The left side gets away with murder on those sites. Seems hypocritical to slap one down and not the other.
Freedom of speech is freedom for speech that we don't like, which is the whole point. Without it that "freedom" is meaningless. Admittedly FB and Mewe are private companies and can censor what they like.
As for Mewe (and all the others,) it's like a city. It has the nice party and the foul parts. Stick with the one that works for you. I'll avoid the rabidly left sections as well as the others. Avoid the sites with the foul parts and there are zero sites that you will be able to join.
Now, the upside to all this permitted "speech that we don't like" is that it's a big help to law enforcement. Antifa goons want to smash something and there's this lovely record on Facebook, or wherever, that the prosecution can use. Ditto wannabe NAZIs, nutjobs with guns, other terrorists, etc.
It gives us a way to monitor them.
Funny how Gab was slammed when they turned some shooter's data to law enforcement when none of the other sites did the same, for him or anyone else, and were not criticized for it. Funny how the only one that does is slammed.
President Cherry-2 I’m finding pluspora and friendica interesting. Not so many of the people I was following and interacting seem to be there - they went to MeWe or discord or twitter it seems: I am on all three but so far MeWe has worked best for me.
BUT: that doesn’t mean I find it as good as here, sad to say. I may end up maintaining MeWe only for certain contacts and just broadening my horizons to see what presents on the other platforms. Youme and Pashpost have been getting a bit of positive mention so I may try them next. I haven’t found the same feel on MeWe as I did here. I find their UX makes conversations a bit difficult to follow - not by a lot, really, but its amazing how a slight difference can affect how you relate to the tool and thus the environment. Even if the people are good.
So if I find the same mix of interesting things and interactions elsewhere, my focus will probably shift there.
To answer your original question: who do you want to keep in touch with? That was my main driver. Where are they going and where do they recommend? If you know people you want to keep in touch with have gone to 6 different platforms you may feel the need to establish a presence on all of them just to maintain that contact post G+. Doesn’t mean you’ll have to stay there for the next 5 years, or even 1. But if you do go to different places, tell those people here and ask them to look for you and re-establish contact, so you can start rebuilding things: and so you’re not a stranger in a new environment. Even if they’re friendly there, familiar faces help.
A bit late in the day I guess for this advice, but maybe it’ll still help a bit. Good luck.you.me - you.me

Not really.
ReplyDeleteBut it's usable.
I don't it is awful..................
ReplyDeleteMe We is crap. There's some nasty characters on there.
ReplyDeleteDiaspora seems to be the best alternative.

There is no suitable replacement for G+. I'm having a hard time deciding where to go with the many wish-washy options, to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for OpenBook.

David Bell part of the reason I'm hanging on till the very end. Wouldn't it be funny if it was all an extremely cruel April Fool's joke? 🤣
ReplyDeleteShawn Andrew I can't imagine the name without thoughts of projectile defecation.
ReplyDeleteMeWe has an extremist bias with extensive white nationalist, anti-muslim, Nazi, and antivaxxer content and communities.

You mean like twitter? Or Facebook?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I expect it's there. You can find porn, too. That's the problem with free speech, stuff that you don't like will appear.
And, if youi want, you can have a mewe experience, like mine, that's 100% free of that stuff. Your call.

Michael Warburton it takes time to find them but Diaspora does have some interesting people.
ReplyDeleteFriendica, Diaspora, YouMe are my main ones. FTR I won't be touching MeWe. Just the UX alone makes me twitch.
