My Migration story, some thanks, and thoughts of two social sites I seriously considered.

I found out about the sunsetting a few weeks later than many back in October 2018. I had been away and when I came back, I hadn't been online more than a day when I found out G+ was sunsetting by August 2019

I had my reservations immediately about features that would continue working, but when the powers that be chopped the time frame down by several months to April, it was a kick in the face.

Anyway, at the outset, I had several friends telling me to migrate to MeWe. Wow, I thought, this was unexpected. How could these friends choose a new home in the span of the two weeks I was offline?
Though I had full trust in these friends, I wanted to do my own vetting for the members of my communities, and the so many others I have made friends with on the Plus.

To be frank, my main concern was focused on the community aspect.
Members and friends needed some easy layman's information, and doubly needed a place to meetup.

For the past few years, communities were pretty much where I spent all my time. Hey, interest based is my thing, and communities/collections fit the bill.

To do my part, I immediately created the Google Plus Meetup on Facebook. I thought to myself, ya know, it's a stable site, and will be there for the long term.
I chose a few experienced long time Plussers to help run the group. Phew...good thing as I had no idea the learning curve I was about to face with so many issues.
John R. Ellis, Christian Nalletamby Heather Wallace and Ricrab, with the addition of so many other G+ refugees that added their thoughts, queries, and opinions, have each been a godsend with helping build a group offsite into something useful and informative for refugees.
Thanks to you all :)

It's also no surprise that the mainstay of our Google Plus Meetup discussion thread, along with our permanent Digital Library, gained many entries from sharing the incredible work of John Lewis Edward Morbius Julian Bond and other members from this very Google+ Mass Migration community.

So, a Very special thanks goes out to the creators, mods, and members of this site!!
You've all contributed to my own, and many other's education concerning the sunsetting and migrating.

It's no surprise anymore at this late hour that Google+ Mass Migration is the go to site for information on any number of issues,. education and information.
Again, Big Time Hats off to the owners, mods and members that have contributed to Google+ Mass Migration

While I'm thanking people, I'll give a special thanks to John R. Ellis for the years of help...both public and private he's provided for me on any number of issues. John has truly been a G+ stalwart for so many years. Myself, like a few others that know John, noticed when he saw the end coming. He just happened to realize it long before many of us.

I'd also like to thank all the members of our Google + coms. Even though I use sock-puppets many times, thank you all for supporting our similar interests!

A further thank you goes out to the general G+ atheist community. Though I have my constant beefs with some atheists, the overall community itself is one of very well read and intelligent members that hold themselves spectacularly with knowledge in the many facets of the atheist/theist/agnostic/igtheist/apatheist/deist/theological/philosophical areas. Heh...how's that for a summation of positions? And I didn't even touch the surface ;)

A special thanks goes out to Ricrab, Fidem Turbāre, Andreas Geisler, cecilia FXX, +Carlos Landzatt , Rich LaDuca and Chris Talbot for their years both public and private with driving the greater atheist community to be something quite special.
Please...I know I missed so many names...please know I'm appreciated of you all :)

So, back to migrating...

I took two of my favorite communities...OUR HUMANITY and The Big Questions and created them again on fb. My thought was, I wanted new sites that were going to be around basically forever. I didn't want to have to do this all over again in a year or two.

At the time, outside Facebook, my only real in depth research was with MeWe.

As I said, from the very first day I came back from my break, some friends were convincing me to go to MeWe, I wasn't convinced...but, I joined and thought I'd give it a try.

It wasn't long till I did the least amount of research that I realized they had a negative marketing model. From their ad in the New York Times (or Post?) with how they leveraged another social site to sell their own. It was very much a turn off for me.

If one has a product that is so good...it should sell itself, and positively compare itself, not ride on the back of another site with negative advertising.

Furthermore, looking at their business model, I had my doubts it was scalable.
Venture Capital always wants its return and I'm highly skeptical of creating anything from the top down.

Of course, I"m just a bottom up type of guy. Build something step by step with goals and adjust as need be.
MeWe's plan is purportedly throw Millions of dollars in funding into the site, hire 30+ employees, and advertise growth by 30, 000 members a day...WUT??

I smelled a rat. shysters, something was wrong, my spidey senses went into overdrive.
As someone else said, it was the shiny new toy that everyone was being sold.

Anyway, since this time, there's been any amount of ads for MeWe in the G+MM com and elsewhere. Most of them quite a turn off to me. Negative advertising is bound to fail. It's scraping the bottom of the barrel in advertising and integrity imho. It made me wonder at the sincerity of the overall site itself, and definitely makes me wonder where those millions are being spent???
Where are they spending their money? What do 30+ employees do? Can we trust the numbers like 30, 000 plus a day they easily quote? Add to this the negative advertising and I smell trouble from the top down.
All in all, I do not recommend this site for these reasons and more others have stated time and again,.

Anyway, continuing on my migration journey, I came upon a site called YouMe.social. What drove me to join..I don't know as I thought I was solidified in rebuilding on fb. I wasn't really open to checking out the vast amount of offerings I was coming across, but I spent the minute it took to sign up with my fb plugin and...wow...I found something interesting~!!

My first reaction was, yes, YouMe.social fails on so many levels...yet...it goes beyond so many expectations with finding a similar home to G+.

I was skeptical, I wasn't sold, yet I did some initial testing of the site and then tagged the owner with a Q&A. He showed up pretty quick and answered my questions.
This was a good start for me. I continued to test the site, and put questions to the owner.
Through time I realized the site suffered from many things...but one thing became very apparent...

The owner created it solely for us Plussers. He wanted us to have a home, to have a place to set up our coms (now called groups). He wanted to create as similar as possible a site to cater to us Plussers.

But after the MeWe debacle of research, what were this owners motives?

Humph, I thought, I'm gonna keep on being skeptical and pressing issues. Finally at one point...no doubt to my skepticism and want to know more, I received an offer to come into the back-end and see for myself what's really going on. To see if the owner is really what he says he is, to see if he's capable with providing a home for plussers that's sustainable, on the level, and has potential longevity.

Umm...okay, I got a much more rounded view concerning all my skepticism. The owner, Jamez Frondeskias, was capable and is providing for our Plusser needs with integrity at the forefront, and in an honorable way.
Huh, to my surprise, he's continually evolving what many of us have seen and will upgrade and upgrade to make many Plussers happy to call it home.

Of course, I still had even more questions, I mean, where's all the members? Where's the busy site that's to be expected?

Yet...slowly, and a little step at a time, the site really is becoming another G+. Members are trickling in, the site is about to present major upgrades, a back end team of ex Plussers has/will join with helping, and overall, It's got such promise.

Most importantly ,the owner is not dissing others, he is not riding on the back of negative adverting, in fact, he's creating something that stands on its own. Something members are realizing is something quite special.

I will say, I remember back to the early days of G+. Wow...how about a time warp with YouMe.social? Much the same feel with forerunners and builders who made the Plus into something special.
It's my personal hope that many of the early adopters of G+ will spend some time on YouMe.social. It's got that same vibe that we can do this. We can build this. We can create our home!

Of course there are going to be bugs. Of course there's going to be features some want that won't be there...but as myself and others really look for a site that closely mirrors G+, I've concluded, without reservation, to call YouMe.social my new home~!!

I'm a realist. So many of the new sites and offerings presented in the last few months will inevitably fail...but not YouMe.social.
I know it has motivated Plussers running it, and if enough check it out, while realizing it is being built from the ground up, it can only succeed.

If you blog about this stuff, if you like to see what's out there, then you must come check out YouMe.social while realizing it will continue to evolve.

I'm building two groups there right now .
One is called OUR HUMANITY,
Another which is debate based called Debate-Able.

We've yet to put tlc into them, but we will...just like we did on the Plus.

Wow...this is so long...sorry ;)

I'll end by thanking two last people. One from the past, while both towards the future!

First, Jamez Frondeskias. Thank you my friend. You've provided something I am more than proud to get behind. YouMe.social as it currently looks, is only the beginning of our long journey together. Following your leadership is my pleasure. Few people I've met are so motivated and full of integrity. Along with your leadership, I'm so relieved you are providing my new home. So big time thanks for that :)

The last thanks goes out to Heather Wallace. She and I have been teammates from day one here on G+.
We've tried many experimental ventures, had failures, arguments., good ole cries together, and through it all, I found the nicest person online that anyone could ever meet.
We've been community building together for many years. We've seen so much, and continue to learn together daily.
In fact, Heather consented to helping YouMe.social herself.

For any that know Heather, if she supports something, you damn well better check it out. She doesn't easily put her name behind stuff. Yet here she is, and her and I are two very happy parts of a greater admin that helps Jamez bring us Plussers our new home.

Thank you for reading my thoughts.
Google Plus was our site...we built it. We put years into it...and the powers that be failed us.

I would rather have a site we build together, bugs and all, along with ownership that wants us to be there for no other reason than to provide us a home, much more than a site needing to make money to stay afloat with us as the experiment.

Allan M.

  1. Wasn't quite sure how to categorize. It's my goodbye and thanks, as well as where I ended up.

    ReplyDelete
  2. That all sounds good, but here's my problem with all these sites. You're forced to sign up for them without seeing what you're signing up for. There's no way to just just go and look around and see if you'd even be remotely comfortable with them.
Kind of how I ended up up on mewe and a couple of the sporas. No choice but to sign up and do a full fledged profile. Now I'm in them and, in spite of knowing many people in all of them, I kinda hate them. I have no interest in signing up for something else if I'm not gonna even like it a little.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Heather Hult Then don't sign up for any of them:) Easy peasy :)

Out of curiosity, where did you migrate?

    ReplyDelete
  4. I missed Christian Nalletamby re atheist coms.
I know I know...I'm missing so many, but I'd end up having to list all my friends etc and it'd take away from the message ;)

    ReplyDelete
  5. al m as I said, I'm on mewe, pluspora and diaspora. Those are where most of my friends are. I don't like any of them. But I don't want to lose contact with my friends either. Basically, I'm just using them as place holders, hoping against hope, that something better will come along.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Heather Hult Without giving anything away, there are major upgrades coming to YOuMe.social.
I'm simply under non disclosure to discuss :)
Thanks for sharing an issue ;)

    ReplyDelete
  7. al m thank you. I'll try to keep that in mind. And please forgive my little rant. I'm not a very tech-savvy person, and until the shut-down announcement here I'd never been on another social media site. So this entire situation has had me very distressed.
    Thank you again.

    ReplyDelete
  8. al m You signed an NDA for a company you're not vested in?

Or do you have a vest, and I missed the disclosure :D ?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Heather Hult with the new site launching at the end of the week, the main stream will be publicly viewable so you can see what's going on without joining.

Thanks al m for the mention and write up.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jamez Frondeskias thank you. That's good to know. I'll visit and check it out.

...and maybe even join at some point. :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Heather Hult when the new site goes like, I will be promoting it here on G+.

Find a place you feel comfortable with, whether its us or someone else. Its going to be your new home after G+ finally closes the door.

If you have any questions whatsoever about YouMe Social, please let me know. I generally come here once or twice a day. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Jamez Frondeskias What's your policy on people who want very bad things, and whose speech is directly harmful to society and the world?

    Like, say, anti-vaxxers?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Jamez Frondeskias comfort. That's been my biggest problem. This has always been my home, and now I'm deeply uncomfortable anyplace else.

And after I've had a chance to explore your site a bit, you may be sorry about the questions invitation. Chances are I'll pepper you with them! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Heather Hult Me too. I had no interest whatsoever with going anywhere, learning about other sites outside the Plus.
Meh...it takes times like this that forces us to investigate.

I wish you the best in whatever site you finally call home :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Jamez Frondeskias Well there you go...Jamez says what I couldn't ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Andreas Geisler These are the no-nos of YouMe Social

    1. Porn
    2. Child porn [those that share this, will have their details sent directly to Europol, as we are based in the EU]
    3. Hate speech
    4. intimidation/harrassment/solicitation

Re the likes of anti-vaxxers, personally no time for them. IF they care to share their posts, they better be backed with documented scientific evidence or they won't last long on the site.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Andreas Geisler Surely we'll bring back "You Be The Judge" and continue on ;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jamez Frondeskias I would say much of anti-vaxxer output is mainly classifiable as "promoting self-harm or harm of wards". Might want to add that under point 4, as it is quite a frequent feature of online speech.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Jamez Frondeskias What about unsolicited chat ups? Is there a way to report and block the dudes who think your platform is a hookup site?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Youme social offers to sign you thru FB or email or G+...so facebook is offering this outside app??

    ReplyDelete
  21. Brenda Rebel Angel No no, it's simply a plug in that's presented;...which i used for easy signup. Took all of 30 seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Heather Hult Thank you, as well :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Linda Tewes Report them and they will be dealt with.

And if it is from those lovely ladies who are looking for relationships with "honest men", do flag them so we can show them the proverbial door. Only had a couple so far, but the door slammed real hard on their rear ends.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Andreas Geisler with the launch of the site on Friday, there will be a details "no no" list provided to all members and will be pinned to the stream.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks for shouting out to the atheist community al m

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jamez Frondeskias Can you clarify if you have block tools and if so how they work?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Marcus Burggraf yes we do and no, I can't tell you how they work.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jamez Frondeskias Why not, block features are user facing. I mean I see a poster behaving shitty, I report them and immediately want them to be blocked from seeing what I post and I don't want to see anything by them. Sometimes I just want to block people without them breaking any rules so no need for reporting but the block feature needs to be there.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Marcus Burggraf my apologies. I read your initial comment as something relating to the back end of the system.

You can block members quite easily as a user of the service. You don't need to notify anyone that you have done it.

IF the reason is that they broke the rules or you suspect they may be likely to break the rules [eg, spamming, solicitation etc], we need to know about it so we can then address it from the website side of things as well.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jamez Frondeskias Thanks, that's what I was wondering. Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Marcus Burggraf apologies once again for misreading your initial comment

    ReplyDelete
  32. Looks nice, but some misfeatures (IMO) / unnecessary hurdles: needs Javascript for signup, but you'll learn that only after you entered your credentials, which (of course, sigh) disappear on reload, when JS gets enabled. Expects a full (real?) name, requires an avatar image before signup (so be prepared to have one handy).

    ReplyDelete
  33. I definitely will check out Youme.social by the end of the week and give it a try... thanks for sharing your migration story al m

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks for the mentions. Notifications icon is now off for G+ and I found this by going to my Notifications Link. Will reshare to Public (if that still works!) even though I have not tried YouMe yet - I trust Al M to be promoting a solid endeavor.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wow! All those "thank you's" I thought I was at the Oscars:)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Approximately 5 weeks ago, I asked the following question in a thread (see https://plus.google.com/u/0/+JamezFrondeskias/posts/U97usefb7SG), but never received a response. Can you answer it for me?

    > Does Youme.social support functionality for hiding
    > memberships and posts in communities?

This particular functionality is crucial for me because I have certain interests (namely, computer science and otaku subculture) with incompatible audiences. Without this functionality, it is impossible for me to maximize the number of my followers because as soon as I submit a post in my main circle on one of the two topics, most followers who are interested in the other topic will leave (this is the main reason that I do not join pluspora, for example, despite preferring pluspora to MeWe (which I also refuse to join, albeit for the reasons that you outlined above)).
plus.google.com - Hi all, The new site is now open. Please read below before joining. Profile...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Benjamin Russell apologies but never saw your question. I have answered it, but in brief ... Yes we do have secret/private groups where the posts etc are only seen by the members of that group.

Please note that the site moderators and I can see everything that is posted on the site

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jamez Frondeskias How will you prevent YouMe from being used for porn or worse pedophilia if they can hide? I’m not against privacy or private groups but this functionality can be misused.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Linda Tewes they can't hide as everything is viewable to me and the moderators.

    With porn, it's instant banning.

With child porn, the member's details will be sent to Europol (we are based in the EU).

We have zero tolerance for that stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jamez Frondeskias Thank you. It’s good to know that even private groups are being monitored.

Do you have a clear definition of porn? To distinguish it from kink or pin up art? Is it limited to pictures or is writing included in the definition?

    Same question about pedos.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Linda Tewes anything that involves intercourse or depictions of it, we classify as porn. That includes stories but does not include famous statues or paintings.

With child porn, anything that depicts a child in a sexually suggestive image is child porn

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jamez Frondeskias Unfortunately, pedos can get off on an Old Navy ad. On G+ it’s difficult to separate professional photographers sharing their work from pedos collecting wank material.

As for porn, I get really irritated at people who post clearly recognizable body part but claim it’s not porn because they aren’t naked. e.g. camel toe.

Porn is intended to arouse. And that’s why they post it. My thought: if it looks like it belongs on FetLife or PornHub maybe it shouldn’t be posted here.

I guess I’m preaching to the choir.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I certainly feel much more comfortable with the way YouMe is going than with MeWe. Sadly, a set of the communities that I was in on G+ decided to jump ship early, before YouMe turned up, and I fear they won't want to move again ☹️.

Sure, there are missing features, and notifications are a bit of a PITA at the moment (leading to "too focused" data - just a single comment - on desktop, and way too general - the commenter's profile - on mobile) but I've submitted feedback about it all, and am optimistic that these things will improve.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Jamez Frondeskias, quick question I was curious about. This post initially questioned where the funding for MeWe came from but I haven't see where the funding for YouMe is coming from.

Pluspora was set up by fellow Plussers as it appears this has been which is awesome. I imagine this is a similar situation. But even the most altruistic fellow netizen can only go so far alone. Server and bandwidth costs will eventually creep up.

So, what is the long term plan? Or is that still being hammered out?

    ReplyDelete
  45. John R. Ellis Thanks John. See you on the other side of migration ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Christine Bichler Thanks so much for reading ;)

    ReplyDelete
  47. British Bob Ha ha...me too! Got carried away and a little sentimental ;) Lots of years of memories built up on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Scott Jordan My post asked what they were doing with all the money. Something doesn't seem right to me.

As for YMS, there's a sizable amount of money dedicated to keep the site running. It will last for quite awhile. If needed, there are other revenue sources that Jamez Frondeskias wishes to keep private for now.
Yes, there is a long term plan. One which Jamez is not going to share.

I will tell you this, I offered to pay if it ever needs ongoing capital. I got a nice pat on the head sort to speak with reassurance there's no need for that.

    ReplyDelete
  49. al m So where did YMS get the money?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Scott Jordan It's solely funded by Jamez Frondeskias.

    ReplyDelete
  51. al m How is that different than MeWe? Some dude with means starts their own social network based on their personal philosophy/worldview.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Scott Jordan Everyone starts a social network with some purpose.
MeWe's is to be the next facebook. They'll fail horribly.

YMS's is to provide a home for Plussers, created by an ex plusser and run by ex plussers.

There is no want to be the next fb.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Scott Jordan MeWe is funded by VCs which will be looking for a return on their money.

Youme Social is solely funded by me and if it succeeds, it succeeds. If it fails, at least I tried to give something back to all those G+ers who I have known since the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Jamez Frondeskias Great. I am just trying to nail down what that means. "Success" can mean different things which incurs different levels of cost. And when costs are involved, things inevitably get wonky.

To be clear, everything I have seen so far has been inline with my views. Privacy policy, content restrictions, etc are all good. I am not knocking you or YMS at all. I am just trying to understand where this is eventually going.

Just asking the usual questions folks have about any new platform under consideration which is why this community exists. We all want to know the intricacies of where we are going when this comes tumbling down next month.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Scott Jordan no offence taken :) I hope my response didn't come across the wrong way.

If you have any other questions - let me know. Am G+ once or twice a day till it finally shuts down.

    ReplyDelete
  56. al mJamez FrondeskiasI have been impressed by what I've read here and Jamez constantly coming forward to answer the many questions.

    I have signed up.

I have a couple of issues with the site (function nothing else) and I messaged Jamez who replied almost immediately to investigate.
It is not resolved but hopefully it will be soon.

You can find me there with the same name

    ReplyDelete
  57. British Bob Very similar to how I chose it as well.

    ReplyDelete
  58. British Bob - I am normally online from around 8am till 10pm London time every day. Thankfully mobiles exist so not tied down to a laptop. On occasions, I may take a bit longer to reply as am out and about doing real life stuff, but I do try and get back to people as quickly as feasibly possible.

My inbox is always open to everyone, no matter what the issue. How that pans out in the future is another thing, but I will always be there to respond to any issue or question.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Frankly I am waiting until the upcoming upgrade to check out the site because there is such a steep learning curve for new platforms and I want to learn on the new improved version. In advance of that, I have a few questions about censorship in general - is it all spelled out clearly in the TOS? People will always test the boundaries of course, and there is some famous quote in Merika from maybe a SCOTUS that "I can't define porn but I know it when I see it". It sounds like from the above discussion that "Private" groups will be monitored/moderated and Porn is right out. Same for Hate groups? Terrorist groups? What about Fake news/Conspiracy theory groups? Where is the line from toxic to tolerated - which is the bane of social media - where you have to either err on the side of "freedom of speech" vs "censorship"? From what I see so far, Emenator and Minds allow most anything, while Facebook, MeWe (and I assume YouMe) are more heavily censored?

    ReplyDelete
  60. John R. Ellis I think most of this has been covered above by Jamez Frondeskias in some detail. Although you have raised some points which I'm sure Jamez Frondeskias or al m will respond to.

As to the learning curve...It seems to function much like here. So dip your toe in..
Of the sites I've seen so far... YouMe seems the most like home (G+)

One last thing....When you assume... You make an ass out of sumption:)

  61. I see our profile photos have begun to disappear....

  62. After posting a post on youme to do with atheist beliefs, a known atheist supporter, who promotes abusive robust discussions, had a robust interaction with me. Considering that the main supporters and contributors of youme are atheistic or atheistic supporters, I was banned. I immediately asked to be removed from youme because of the endless harassment. Jamez Frondeskias, the owner of the site, is also an atheist by the way.

It doesn't take an Einstein to put two and two together. These people made an excuse that I had an overly robust discussion with a person who supports abusive robust discussions, this is the reasons I was banned.

Other people have complained about being banned from G+ and FB. I have never been banned from G+ or FB, so why was I really banned from youme? And these same people talk about religious people, in how they ostracise and harass people not of their own.

It was too obvious when you consider that I blocked an atheist for their obvious indiscretions in relation to me earlier on, which the atheist who promotes abusive robust interactions was very good friends with.

Never have I had any trouble like this on MeWe. MeWe is truly about free speech and expression unlike youme. I am neither an atheist nor religious, just open and honest with the truth in how it is, not how many would desire it to be.

I do have a copy of a lengthy private discussion I had with the owner and another known atheist on youme, not very becoming or professional. When I was removed from youme, I was latter on harassed by the owner of youme. I told him, you must be stupid or something, people are listening to me, stop harassing me. The harassment, which is the reason I asked to be removed from youme, finally stopped.

Evidence can be supplied if needed.
