What will you do with links to G+Photo Albums?

What will you do with links to G+Photo Albums?

Perhaps you run a blog or forum that contains posts that have links to G+Photo albums that you create back in the heady days of Picasa. When publishing public photo albums was really easy.

It's 11-Mar and there's 22 days till G+Sunset. On 2-April all those photos will be gone and all those links will fail.

You can download the "G+Photos from posts" albums, upload them to Google Photos or some other shared space. And then go through your blog adjusting all the links.

Or you can just let them 404.

  1. well I actually haven't links to G+Photo albums, but lessons learned, nothing will remain forever!

  2. You can archive them to Inernet Archive.

  3. Edward Morbius I'm wondering how that helps.
    1) Blog post with an embedded tag pointing at a https://lh3.googleusercontent.com image

    2) Blog post with an embedded tag pointing at a https://plus.google.com image

    3) Blog post with an embedded tag to a https://plus.google.com album.

If you force an internet archive grab of the blog post, in each case, the link or the image will fail won't it?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Julian Bond You can submit the images themselves.

Alternatively, spider your blog for the images, and update references.

(You'll have to re-edit the image links regardless.)

  23. Wait.I thought all our photos in posts were automatically IN Google Photos! So they should be saved even if we do nothing.PLEASE advise!

  24. Leathur Rokk Go here. https://get.google.com/albumarchive
The album "G+Photos from Posts" is going to be deleted and needs backing up. All other albums on that page are unaffected.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Leathur Rokk albums created in Google+ before Google Photos split off in 2015 should be in your Google Photos, and the Google Photos copy will not be deleted. But the sharing link to an album in Google Photos may be different than the original link to the album from Google+.

If you have a Blogger blog, any image you inserted into a post should be fine, as that usually makes a copy into the blogs own album.

  26. Spent a lot of time agonizing over this, beginning with G's "not-crystal-clear" explanations. #1, it seems like anything specific to G+ albums or posts is toast. BUT, for long-time users, some of our albums have magically been converted to Photos albums, ostensibly safe. Another G-explanation states that "shared" albums (Photos, not G+) are safe, so what I did was go to albums, saw most already designated as shared, and added others to "shared", plus took them up on an offer to share with others. Shared with myself and got a link to 1500 (max) photos, tile-style, and no indication these would not be enduring. So I have sharable links x3 different ways, plus the actual original photos (between takeout and backup + posted elsewhere). Then I get to the question of "who cares, anyway?" and would make an effort to find my old triviata and whimsy, be it indexed or in amber in the Internet archives? Again I'm back to "YMMV" and doing what works for yourself.

  27. I have blog posts with links to G+ collections.

    Not many of those, fortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've got a self-hosted Wordpress blog for which I had used the Google+ Crossposting plugin to import my G+ posts and comments over the course of several years. Until this moment, I hadn't realized that the images weren't likewise imported but, rather, the URLs refer to their original Google locations, although I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Happily, I did a takeout of my Google data, including the G+ Post image files, so it should just be a simple matter of transferring the images to my own server and doing a global edit of the Wordpress database to change the location prefix on the image URLs.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Julian Bond Do you have a blog with G+-hosted images you're trying to preserve?

    Stack Overflow:

stackoverflow.com - How do I use Wget to download all images into a single folder, from a URL?

Note that the second response discusses disabling robots and enabling spanning options.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Edward Morbius Useful information. Does my blog contain posts with links to content that will disappear with the G+sunset. I'm not sure. My "G+Photos from posts" album is small. And there's nothing in there I need to keep. I'll be self hosting my final Takeout and that will come with a photos download.

So this whole post is really about other people and links and images across the whole web. The G+ Sunset will break stuff all over the place because the URLs are not persistent and permanent.
