On 30 March Alois Bělaška posted the latest version of Google+ Exporter [ https://gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me ] version 1.8.4 The link below provides instructions on how to use it, plus this contrast with Google Takeout:

"Whats the difference between this tool’s backup and the official Google’s data download files?

"Google+ Exporter tool exports ALL your posts (profiles, pages, collections, and communities) including comments and transforms them into a well-documented structure and prepares import files for your Wordpress blog. (You can choose files prepared for Blogger or JSON files, as well. The default is Wordpress. Be sure to download files in your preferred format!)

"On the other hand, Google Takeout is not documented at all, terribly structured, hard to transform to any reasonable import for other services and with no support from Google at all."

Use the latest version. If you have paid for a license, it will update without any additional charges. You are charged only once for the software. Free versions are, well, free no matter what iteration you install, but they have limited capacity.

When saving files, it is best to rename them with the Community/Collection name. Otherwise, they download with a long meaningless number with the name at the very end of the label.

Allow plenty of time for large downloads, particularly for Communities. If you are a Community member (not an owner or a moderator) you can use this software to download Community posts.

Archives for the Google+ Mass Migration Community are at [ https://gplusmigration.blogspot.com/ ] For the Vintage Life Community, archives have just been established at [ https://vintagelifearchives.blogspot.com/ ]

Best wishes for a smooth transition, everybody!

  1. Will the free version tell you if you’ve missed stuff because there’s more than the 800 limit there?

  2. Alistair Langsford Yes. You get a big red box warning you if you hit the 800 post limit.

  3. I am unable to download anything, even though this software seems to have everything ready to. No matter what format I select in the download options, when I start a download the archive manager (Engrampa) instantly opens with an error message that it cannot open the invalid data (or something like that). I see some files in /tmp/ but nothing that is usable

I'm using Linux Mint MATE 18.3. I sent them a message through their app earlier today and hopefully I'll hear from them soon. (I paid for a license, FWIW.)

    Any suggestions?

  4. Mike Waters Sorry to hear of this! I hope Alois Bělaška can come up with a solution. I have been using the Windows version.

I don't know whether Alois Bělaška is listening on G+, but his Exporter page lists his email as support@friendsplus.me Hope he will get back to you with a solution quickly!

  5. Jeff Diver +Alois Bělaška and I are corresponding via email. I just sent him two screenshots of the error message, etc.

Someone said (somewhere) to click the gear icon to select to download location. But the only thing that it does in the latest Linux version is either disable or enable tor.

  6. Okay, I now see that there are two gear menus. Clicking the SHOW EXPORTS button tries to open the archive manager with the same error message, however clicking on the gear to the right shows where they were saved (to a hidden directory). Seems that everything is working, though! :-)

  7. Mike Waters That would be a question for Alois Bělaška. I am "out of my depth" here, as I have been using the Windows "save as Blogger" pathway as opposed to JSON. (Partly because I do not understand how to use JSON and haven't had time to learn.)

  8. Alois Bělaška It's working okay! Thank you, it was well worth the price. :-)

  11. Cheers Jeff Diver , bought it and exported it myself. Just wish I knew destination! So I've gone with all 3 toes but will probably go to some self hosted solution.

  12. Garry van Diggele Great! Best of luck finding a new home for those results!

  14. Kathrin Pohl I think I read that Exporter does not work or work well on phones. I'm not sure why, but it may be a memory or length of connection issue. Downloads to my laptop have been successful, but time consuming. Perhaps Alois Bělaška would be able to help if Google+ doesn't collapse in the meantime.

  15. Jeff Diver Exporter does not work on phones at all. Also, unless you have a G Suite account, it is too late, as Exporter won't be able to authenticate.
