Google+ Exodus Endgame

Google+ Exodus Endgame

Endgame: The Beginning is in 20 days

On April 2, 2019, Google+ will be shut down. That's in less than three weeks.

On March 7, the G+ Notifications widget was disabled. Interactions on Google+ are far less convenient.

We need to start moving off this site and ensuring we have ongoing communications capabilities. I strongly recommend joining #PlexodusReddit if you haven't already:

If you don't want to join Reddit, you can follow that forum via RSS:

The Archive Team effort to save all public G+ content to the Internet. Archive Wayback Machine has begun. Additional volunteer Archive Warriors are needed!

A dataset of large and active G+ communities is available for outreach and archival

For now, priorities should be:

• Collecting and providing forwarding contact information.
• Archiving any G+ content you plan to save (but don't worry about porting it, yet).
• Committing to a post-G+ platform. It doesn't have to be final, but it has to exist and work now.
• Helping others do all of the above, especially G+ Communities.

Things you should NOT be doing:

• DO NOT waste time Exploring long-shot new platforms.
• DO NOT waste time Litigating what went wrong with G+ / how Google failed / trying to stop the shutdown. There'll be plenty of time after.
• DO NOT waste time arguing with people over their choices. Though warning others of possible grave errors is warranted.

Make sure you have your own public forwarding information clearly posted to your Google+ Profile. Do so with:

• A pinned profile post hashtagged "Signalflare".
• Update your "About" page with URLs and email (if desired).
• Consider collecting contacts from others with a submission email address or Google Form submission.

If you have one or more backup(s) of your G+ content, you're in good shape. It's nice but not necessary to have a final snapshot of all activity.

If you do NOT have a backup and want one MAKE ONE IMMEDIATELY. Google Data Takeout has improved immensely, though it continues to have limitations. The Friends+Me Google+ Exporter is the ONLY way most users can back up Community content, especially for PRIVATE communities.

Don't worry about importing your content to a new platform immediately. Especially if you don't know how: you can do this after the shutdown. Keep in touch via #PlexodusReddit and we can help guide you through that process.

Google+ Communities Migration has been far less successful than I'd have hoped.

There are about 105,000 communities with 100+ members and activity within the 31 days prior to January 5-6, 2019, based on a dataset provided by Friends+Me. Within that set are many productively active communities, some of which are migrating off G+, many of which, though, have no coherent plans.

And, yes, there's a lot of crud in that set as well -- I'm making yet another attempt at identifying quality vs. drek presently, hopefully we can drill in more specifically on high-interest groups. But:

Making a concerted effort to reach out to active G+ communities which want to continue but don't know how remains a high priority.

It's simply all but impossible for a single user to reach out to G+ Community leaders, messaging options on G+ stink, and Google shut down its own official Community support forums, with no notice early in the Sunset process. There are a huge number of stranded communities out there.

I've been talking with groups, including site and platform reps, who've been trying to figure out how to reach and message G+ Communities. The best I can off is massive word of mouth and constant messaging. I'm all ears for better options but we are rapidly running out of time.

There's #PlexodusWiki documentation that can use love. Most especially pages on:

• Communities Migration
• Contacts preservation
• Sites & Platforms
• Risks

And we should start thinking about a post mortem -- what's gone well, what could have gone better. From the beginning I've intended this as a resource for others who face migration from their own sites. If we can smooth the way, so much the better.

  1. If you are starting from activity in December, won't many have left, or given up in despair. Difficult to reach them now from within G+.

  3. Diana Studer ???

Most communities which have been recently active maintain at least a few posts/month.

Unless you're referring to something else.

  5. Diana Studer I'd cast a wider net as a test, looking out 6 and 12 months didn't include much more.

Think of it this way: those communities have either already moved or died. They don't need (or are beyond) help.

  6. Diana Studer Posting recency by Community, based on Jan 20219 data:

joindiaspora.com - G+ Communities: Most Recent post date by month

A six-month sample might be useful.

  7. Edward Morbius your leading multiposter reminds me of a patch on G+ when everything was real estate ads. And one realtor, a woman whose name I have forgotten - who wrote long thoughtful posts - a vivid contrast to Buy This House Now spam.
