I've been looking into PASHPost, which is a social media site specifically geared toward "enthusiasts".
Signing up/Logging In
You can sign in with your Google account without having to create a new one. That's a REEEEEEALY convenient feature to have, right off the bat.
When you create an account, you pick at least 3 interests (not hard for me, I've got a lot!). One of them is "Board Games and RPGs". That's HUGE because most sites just throw everything under "games" (which is a separate interest, mainly video games on PP).
Features: Commenting, Liking Posts, etc.
And the features line up with Google+ nicely. From what I can tell, it functions the same as G+. You can post comments and "like" the comments of others. You can also edit and delete comments and write comments with minimal coding (using asterisks makes italics, etc.).
Not sure if you can create categories in your own stream to post to. But I have an email in to the developers on that.
Oh, and they actually RESPOND! I received a response to a different query in a few hours. Google NEVER responded to anything I sent. Best hope was to root around in the G+ Community and hope someone else knew how to troubleshoot my issue.
Communities on PP are called "groups". And you can create sub-categories for discussion (they call their's "topics").
Other cool stuff
The site also lets you publish "magazines" which is essentially like a mega-post with different formats to choose from for including images. Sorta like the image posting features in Tumblr, which is pretty cool.
Here's a list of the main features:
Groups - communities the member belongs to - similar to Google+
Posts - 3-click text, photo & video uploads – similar to Instagram, Google+
Marketplace - all items the member is selling - similar to Craigslist
Discussion - featuring all discussion the member has contributed to - similar to Reddit
Video - for sharing video content they produce - similar to YouTube
Online Publishing – guided story-telling tool designed to create visually & editorially engaging articles
Verdict? So far, I'm liking this a LOT more than WeMe and other alternatives. It's much more intuitive since it apes G+, but it also adds a lot more.

I'm not a tech person, at all. Is it at least stupid resistant?

That's been a huge bugaboo for me, and probably the reason I haven't looked at other places that might be a better option than where I am.

That implies that anyone who isn't "tech savvy" is "stupid," which is false: I used to work as ITD (Information Technology Department) Coordinator at a Berlitz Language Center in Manhattan, and knew at least two coworkers who spoke several different European languages who worked there as a language teacher, and who was reasonably knowledgeable about many different topics, but who was exceptionally weak at technical topics, and who couldn't type. This person was not "tech savvy"; however, this person wasn't "stupid," either.
Perhaps a more appropriate adjective might be "layperson-friendly?" (Other alternatives might include "non-geek-friendly" or perhaps even (albeit in a slightly derogatory Rowling-esque sense) "muggle-friendly.")

Computers on the whole aren't my thing.
Heather Hult Another ambiguity with the term "stupid resistant" is that it also implies that the purpose is to be "resistant" of "stupid" people, which implies that the point is to keep them from signing up. However, this implication actually seems to be the opposite of your indicated intention, which was, apparently, to facilitate their joining PASHpost.
ReplyDeleteBenjamin Russell I'm sorry if I offended your sense of semantics. I was just asking a question and stupid resistant is a phrase I often use. Ask anyone who knows me. It's not meant as a slam or a slight to anyone, not even me.

(Aside from working as ITD Coordinator at Berlitz, I also used to teach both English and Japanese there, and have an unfortunate tendency to be somewhat pedantic, especially about semantics (one of my favorite courses in computer science was actually "Computer Science 430a: Formal Semantics" (albeit of programming languages) (under Professor Paul Hudak in fall of 1993, IIRC)).)

ReplyDeleteThe question unanswered is do you need to sign up to look around ? I'm with Heather Hult in that i don't wish to sign up just to explore the features of a site to see if it is compatible with my style of use. The easiest way to ask about the complexity of use for a user would be 'is this site intuitive to use or complex'

Gary Gregory Hello Gary. To be clear: PashPost is not a walled garden. It is 100% searchable, transparent and open. All Groups are public. We will have an app soon, and PashPost’s name is really unique: Pash short for Passion, because it’s a platform built for Enthusiasts, and Post is both a noun and a verb and reflective of the platform’s focus on shareable content between Enthusiasts. Thanks for the opportunity to clarify those points.

Ron "PASHpost" Gavillet Just a little feedback because the name was raised above - in my country "pash" means to snog or make out. Talking about it with another user as a possible destination, they thought it was a porn site.
ReplyDeleteI'm also not enamored of the idea of being forced to select 3 topics before I could even investigate a Community issue. I would have felt more comfortable being able to just look without content being thrown at me.
Even when I had only half signed up the site was spamming my inbox.
Just some thoughts.
Aakheperure Merytsekhmet I agree with the pash bit but a snog's better than a kick in the goolies anyday. Realistically the name is irrelevant if the site meets your needs, G+ could construe hitting the G spot extra well so really who cares as long as it works.

ReplyDeleteGregory Bagshaw Realistically a name is important, contact with pashpost had been dismissed as porn spam by the person I was discussing it with. How many others to whom we will refer our educational content will think the same thing? Platform names ARE important - to us at least.

Anyway, to keep the discussion on-topic: I share the concern that the name 'PASHpost' might not be as catchy or even have negative connotations to some. However, it's not easy imho these days to pick a name that's catchy, easily searchable, doesn't mean anything rude in another language, is available as a domain name, isn't already trademarked, and triggers your fancy...

ReplyDeleteGary Gregory PASH pretty much do full-service community migrations, and have done so fo a bunch of (selected) communities. Around 40+ candidates that I'm aware.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius do you have less concerns about them than other alternatives such as mewe? I haven’t found much about them online aside from a few reviews and couldn’t find much here. Nothing more than what is noted in the plexodus reddit. It’s probably the main thing holding me back, as I’m trying to get somewhere with pluspora/friendica to see if that might be a better long term home than MeWe.

nonie maylle Hello Nonie. PASH is happy to help set up your group; you can then make a pinned post in your Community inviting members to join your new group. Here's the link to PASHpost's T&C's. You'll note it includes language regarding not harassing, bullying or intimidating others, and that users will not post hate speech, threatening, malicious or discriminating content, as well as content that infringes or violates someone else's rights or otherwise violates the law, etc. Thank you Nonie.
