Its a sealed goldfish bowl. I am there, and starting to be EXTREMELY unhappy with the "all hate speech against the right is allowed and thus not hate speech, anything that disagrees with the progressive zeitgeist is hate speech" ... Not a good solutiin
ReplyDeleteChristof Harper A sealed goldfish bowl? You mean pluspora, which is a diaspora pod that is federated with thousands of other diaspora pods? If you don't like the politics of the podmin of pluspora, choose one that matches your views, or start your own.
ReplyDeleteUnless R<0Ω
ReplyDeleteThen you get some really cool circuits.
Christof Harper Uh, yeah, how do you manage to get sealed on one pod of Diaspora when there are hundreds and they all communicate with one another?
ReplyDelete❨❨❨David C. Frier❩❩❩ you and Brian can point to Federation all you want, culturally pluspora is acting as if it is sealed.
ReplyDeleteI understand the network protocols. That's not what I'm talking about.
This is the kind of intentional not understanding that makes the internet so frustrating
Christof Harper Perhaps if you attempted to explain what you mean, rather than making sweeping comments we might be able to understand what you mean. Let me try to elucidate what I was trying to say.
ReplyDeletePluspora is the private property of its owners. As such, the owners get to set the rules for what behavior and content they will allow to be posted on their pod, and who they invite to stay as members of the pod. If you don't like the rules of the owners of that particular pod, go visit somewhere else or start your own.
This is the essence of diaspora. Each pod is a distinct entity, however, they share content among all of them. If you can find a pod that will allow you to post what you want, or create your own pod where you can set your own rules, then your content will be shared among all diaspora pods. That's why I said it is not sealed.
What I am not understanding is why you think it is a problem that the pluspora pod owners are exercising their own property and free speech rights to control the content associated with their pod.
Brian Holt Hawthorne That sounds awesomely complicated -- one reason I've not been in a hurry to join Pluspora: I'm not a techie of any kind. I've bookmarked a few other sites to check out, once I settle into a groove on some kind with my blog and Instagram. (Check my home page for the links.)
ReplyDeleteSteve Vasta email is pretty difficult complicated too.
ReplyDeleteChristof Harper it seems a lot of people are not seeing what you're seeing about Pluspora specifically, and Diaspora federation in general. I certainly don't. I'll readily admit that *pora feels rather more diverse and liberally slanted than you would be comfortable with, but I've seen a wide range of things on the federation, not just liberalism. I think that comes from *pora being more international, more European in audience than G+.
ReplyDeleteWe've been participating in conversations for a long-ish while now, and it always seems to me like you're actively assuming that people are attacking you or your viewpoint or way of life whether or not that's actually the case. My opinion may not be correct, but that's how it looks. I can see why one would not want to be on a network where one had to be constantly on guard like that, and feeling like everyone was out to get them. Quite frankly, most of the staunch conservatives I know have that same outlook, like the liberals are out to get them and destroy their way of life, when that's just not the case. I think that's actually what separates conservatives from liberals. It doesn't help that media of both slants rush to pronounce apocalypse if something the other side proposes comes to pass.
I don't know what to tell you other than to echo what others have said about trying other pods, or starting your own.
Resistance is natural! It's part of the world we live in.
ReplyDeleteOh!,...
I cannot say I've seen any significant amount of aggressive political discussion on Pluspora, although that quite possibly just tells that my contacts are not particularly politically active.

ReplyDeleteA public discourse forum is a wonderful test tube to attempt advertising techniques. It's under utilized though.
ReplyDeletePaul Hosking Can't say I found that to be true. Of course, like many people who adopted e-mail in the '90s (rather early), I used the AOL software and platform, which simplified everything. Not to mention the fact that I'm now twenty years older....
ReplyDeleteI like #pluspora a lot and have had no problems there. It reminds me more of G+ beta than any of the other alternatives.
ReplyDeleteLove the Borg comment.
ReplyDeleteSteve Vasta same difference. The complexity is really under the hood. It surfaces from time to time to end users in specific situations. But you don't have to dive that rabbit hole unless you want to. Just like email.
ReplyDeleteI am on pluspora and in the main I do find it enjoyable. However, I, too, find there is a pervasive liberalism, that shows knee-jerk reactions against anything that smacks of being "right wing". I find it constrains my freedom of expression.
ReplyDeleteJust saying....
Roy Gardiner It's almost as if a dominant culture can impose a chilling effect....
ReplyDeleteI have an account at PlusPora, but I don't use it because I can't edit posts I've already made. Simple as that. But, la and behold, it seems that because I also have a Friendica folk I knew on Pluspora became contacts for me in Friendica (which does allow me to edit my posts).
ReplyDeleteLaura Ess
