R.I.P. Google+ community...
But do rest in other new homes.
"It's been a good run", a bad stewardship by an evil Google, and an era ending...

Enjoy this last weekend of (partial) notifications and working widgets.
:(
U can c all notification on Gmail if u hv a Google acct for all yr apps...
ReplyDeleteIt's just that widget (under the bell) that's going away next week. You can still get notifications via the mobile apps, or from the Notifications page in G+, or using Browser notifications.
ReplyDeleteTrue. Although it is a bit like getting the last spoonful from an empty jar - very few people are posting new things (what is the point?). But for those of us "here until the very end", yes, maybe we can squeeze the last toothpaste still from the tube, a few more days, maybe a few weeks. :(
ReplyDeleteIn that perspective (this IS the end!) I would again thank Edward Morbius et al for staying here with us, as the bulldozers and bombers approach to eradicate our lives "here".
I'd just like to add a comment (respectfully) regarding "why only 5K people here?" Here, being this community. Not to argue or minimize people's individual perspectives, but empirically/factually:
This community and various spinoffs and mirrors for the past several months has provided monolithic resources for the nitty-gritty of "migration" (tools, platforms, data takeout and export, etc.) as well as discussions of the positives & negatives of possible new destinations and new platforms for our individual wants and needs. A true service and a lot of work!
But the flames are visible now, and some are already "locked out" or about to be, and hopefully many, many more are already busy going about settling in or setting up new homes, safe from the imminent disaster approaching - tick tick tick. So to say it's a surprise to see "only 5000 people" active in this forum NOW... well,
(1) there have now been months of very good information, as well as a place to discuss options and also feelings, with ever-shortening deadlines coming faster than new tools are able to keep up with. Plus, as John Lennon said, "life is what happens while you're busy making other plans." Many people's lives have been disrupted, significantly.
(2) Most have done what we've needed to do as best as could be done with the amount of time given - for import/export, for signal flares to leave breadcrumbs to be found in a new world, public goodbyes, and saving important contact info, posts, images, etc. POINT: If there are 5000 people in a theater being encircled by fire, and the fire doors are open to allow safe and orderly exit.... why on earth would people be paying more attention NOW to posts on this forum - which indeed served its purpose nobly - than to the fact that the building is on fire and we need to be busy getting and being elsewhere? Maybe it's time to think about survival and the future more than posting more blog pieces to G+? (Priorities!)
Just saying...
"Context and Perspective"
Peace... Best luck with the grieving, and may all the good stuff out there beyond provide some comfort and new smiles on the road ahead.
Michael Fenichel Well, I take your point and will not argue with your (1) & (2). But still.....
ReplyDeleteIn as much as I was never able to get satisfactory raw data about how many people actually used their G+ accounts on a regular basis (I do expect that it was significantly more than 5,000) and to this day I have no actual facts about the user base or activity levels of G+ subscribers, I do find it a bit disheartening that less than 5,000 found the time or impetus to sign up here.
No big deal; I am sure that there are plentiful reasons. It just strikes me as odd that this group, a valuable resource for G+ refugees, has not attracted more followers. TNQ
Todd Q keep in mind that far from all of those users actually speak English, or feel comfortable typing it.
ReplyDeleteYou'd also have to be aware of this community. While it's been in some US offline media, the shutdown has had far less exposure in other countries.
Michael Fenichel - I can hear the Vogon Constructor Fleet on approach! I'll be down at the pub myself, not lying in the ditch to save G+. No matter how many people were ever active, I've read many, many great discussions here over the past few months, on the merits and perils of staying connected online, on how to chose a successor, and the amount of energy to invest in any tech solution, that if anything checking G+ has been more rewarding than it was over the previous 18 months. All poignant, like tears in rain.

Good to smile at the good things, the ridiculousness of it all, and the resilience and nature of people. Onward...
