So the OpenBook alpha launched today.

So the OpenBook alpha launched today. It's a mobile app only at the moment with the website version available when it launches properly hopefully.

The app shows promise, but a little buggy so far. Certainly the Android version anyway, which annoyingly exits the app if you hit your phone's back button. Hey it's still an alpha version after all.

There seem to be a bunch of friendly folks onboard already. I created a community over there for Plus refugees, so I could see how communities work over there. /c/plusrefugees

I'm @MichaelW over there. Come say hello if you're on OpenBook already!

  1. I still have registration issues atm but they are on it :)

  2. They wouldn't need an alpha if it wasn't buggy. That's what alphas are for!

  3. I've seen OpenBook staffers commenting on posts acknowledging issues and feature requests. Hopefully the servers will settle down and they'll iron out the bugs.

  4. I'm in for more than an hour now. Looks very promising!

  5. Still won't sign me in. Oh, well. Early days...

  6. Did you manage to create an account but it just won't sign in?

  7. Sign in works, couldn't comment on your post because of a server error ...

  8. Michael Warburton I signed up for alpha quite a while ago so I assumed I could just log in. When I tried it on my phone it wouldn't let me in. Later, when I got home, I followed the instructions they put out on Slack, entered my details, and I'm now in. On there, as on most places, as garryknight. If I'm not following you yet, I will do soon.

  9. I signed for the early access on Indiegogo in February and for that just an e-mail was required.
Yesterday I got the invite from Openbook for setting up an account with their Android app, but the only thing the app does is asking me to log-in with account credentials which do not yet exist (no way to create an account).
    How weird is that?

  10. Stefan Quandt Now you've got the app installed, go back to the email they sent you (on your Android device) and click the big green button.

  11. Signed up for the beta a while back. Still some waiting for me 😫

  12. Garry Knight Clicking the big green "JOIN OPENBOOK" button in the mail leads me to an OpenBook feature overview with a color-cycling "Sign up for beta" button.
So that means after signing for the alpha (and also going through this Indiegogo procedure) I am now supposed to sign again with my e-mail for a beta?
That is as weird and confusing as can be.
After doing so I just got another number on the waitlist (with no e-mail
    confirmation though).
If this is how it is supposed to work, I'll just wait now for things to come...
    Thanks for your response!

  13. Stefan Quandt Strange! You could try asking on their Slack account. They're very good at getting back to you, but they're getting a lot of activity at the moment.

  14. Stefan Quandt Nope. Just open the link on your mobile phone after installing the app and it jumps through the app to the registration process.

  15. The search for communities doesn't work well yet. Was not easy to find the c/plusrefugees Michael Warburton

  16. Cyrill Kunze Ok, after reading through posts on Slack I found that I have to
    a) follow the link in the e-mail using _a_mobile_device and
    b) select the Openbook app to open the link.
With that I could successfully register for Openbook using the App.

For readers without having the context: This works for users which qualified via Indiegogo for the closed Alpha, a beta version is supposed to start one month later.

  17. Stefan Quandt After installing the app you have to go back on your mobile phone to the mail and push the green button.

  18. It could become stigmatized with BOOK in their name.
People who've left the other book may be booked out.
