Updates thru 20 March to [ https://gplusmigration.blogspot.com/ ] include addition of tabs. Some tabs lead off site. The auto labeling software results will have to be heavily edited. Several folks, for instance, have not always tagged their relocations with #SignalFlare. (Me, too.) Labels for Community divisions were not picked up. Some of the tabbed resources are incomplete or not current. As always, suggestions welcome!

Comments

  1. Might want to check if GoogleTakeout label has more results than GoogleDataTakeout, or rather if both can be merged, as they sometimes are used interchangeably.
Not sure if there's an often used label for the Friends+Me Exporter, but if there is, that might make a useful tab too.
The SignalFlare tab is definitely a useful one.

Thanks for your continued efforts on this. :)

  2. Lots of hard work there Jeff Diver Good learning curve, and very much appreciated.

  3. Filip H.F. Slagter Still exploring what can be done with labels. I've added numbers to them and am confounded by the fact that the most popular labels do not display when clicked. Puzzling. These correspond to the original G+ Collection divisions.

I'm also trying to keep the number of tabs displaying down so that we don't generate the annoying tab "More." Advice welcome! I'm torn between useful outside links to the internet and links to posts within gplusmigration. For the time being, it's a mix.

As you know, Friends+Me Exporter is my favorite exporting software. It easily converts to Blogger. Google Takeout just confuses me with all sorts of technical choices I do not understand. (I'm a dummy when it comes to tech stuff.) I've taken out the "HOME" tab to fit it in. Hmm...Still too many tabs...To be continued!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'd put the useful external links on a separate page, and link to that from a single tab 'external', or 'resources', or just in a side-bar list widget.

  5. Jeff Diver Home tab is useful, as it's clunky to go home otherwise. You can rearrange the order of the tabs, choosing what comes first, and what is ... More.

  6. Diana Studer Following a procedure I no longer remember, I configured the blog banner image to point to the home page. I just added a "home" to the banner and underlined it to make it look like a link, but in reality the user can click the banner image anywhere and go home.

  7. Filip H.F. Slagter Good idea. Just linked to a somewhat revised Origins and Resources post. Any idea why those popular label links won't work when clicked?

  8. gplusmigration.blogspot.com - G+ Migration posts via Exporter
Perhaps this one doesn't display because the posts are not 'Public' only visible to members. Or Not??

  9. Could be it doesn't like the special characters in some labels, even URLencoded.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Or perhaps there is a limit to the length of a single label, just like the labels field per post has a limit of 200 characters iirc.

  11. I use this label - which works
    South African / mediterranean plants

    ReplyDelete
  12. gplusmigration.blogspot.com - G+ Migration posts via Exporter

This label for instance - doesn't need Google+ Mass Migration
ALL the posts are that. It would be more useful alphabetised simply under
    Discussion General and Technical.

Would / does that work Jeff Diver ?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Diana Studer I don't seem to be able to change or edit the individual labels in any way other than post by post. I can, however, chose which to display. For the moment, I have chosen not to display the huge "Google+ Mass Migration" labels, since they don't work anyway.

Gradually, I shall see if I can resolve matters by inserting new labels on the original post or adding labels in Blogger. I suspect I can edit the labels in Blogger, too, so that's another option.

Meanwhile, I am distracted by the fact Google can no longer "find" my arnoldtradecards.com blog, though it still exists. This will be my first priority. Don't want to lose 4 years work! The further I get into Google domains, the less I seem to understand! All this happening all at once is very frustrating!

  14. Editing Blogger labels
    You can select all 'Plants'
and add a new label 'flowers' to those posts
    Then delete 'Plants'

  15. Diana Studer Thanks for your patience! I started out with https://arnoldtradecards.blogspot.com/2019/01/arnold-trade-cards-index-welcome.html being short segments of the main index page which used to come up whenever one searched for arnoldtradecards.com.

Why one now has to put the https and www in front of the address to come up with the main index page and avoid a 404 error is beyond me. I have posted a question with the Google Domain Help folks.

Meanwhile, when I go to the domains page, I come up with an unfixable error as per below. Clicking "repair this record" repairs nothing. I don't want to delete the record because I don't know exactly what I'm deleting & fear losing the blog itself. I'm very confused by domains, sub-domains, synthetic domains, etc.!

  29. Diana Studer Mine, too! In any case, I was able to follow up on your lead for bulk editing of Blogger labels here on YouTube [ *youtube.com - Changing Labels in Blogger ]* I'm not sure whether new Exporter uploads will undo all my relabeling, but there's only one way to find out....Here goes!

  30. Jeff Diver you should be able to configure your domain so that the naked domain redirects to the www subdomain. The Google Domains support folk should be able to help you if the settings aren't obvious.

  32. Jeff Diver go to your Blogger > Settings > Basic > Publishing and Edit your custom domain - there is an option to redirect from the root domain to the www subdomain. I don't have that enabled in my Blogger settings, as I'm doing that in domain settings.

  33. Peggy K That clears things up a bit! I have been using both Blogger settings and Domain settings to try to resolve these matters.

In Blogger settings, I clicked the box for arnoldtradecards.com to redirect to https://www.arnoldtradecards.com. Something I did somewhere worked, as that seems to be happening now. The last time I checked, the box was no longer checked, but the redirection (or some other process) was still working. Cause and effect puzzles me here.

I have changes in Domains that I find strange. Some of the blogs that used to post with addresses ending in arnoldtradecards.com are now 404s. They used to appear on the screen below, but now the area where they formerly appeared is filled with "website not available" notifications. The link to "edit" website not available just leads to a 404.

Round and round I go, it seems! Insanity is sometimes defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I seem to be doing the same thing over and over and getting those different results.

By comparison, gplusmigration updates via Exporter are going swimmingly!

  46. Jeff Diver you shouldn't be able to edit the website from Domains the way you have it set up now, as the domain just points to your Blogger blog. As long as your blog is working, you should be good .

  47. Peggy K Thanks! I shall try not to mess anything up!

Thought you might be interested in what Google Domains Help had to say. One of my problems was that, while there was much talk of "subdomains" extant, scant mention was made of the subject in the headings on the Google site.

I do not know to what extent these directions are tailored to my peculiar circumstances. They might or might not be good general guidelines for others in similar situations.

Even though my websites are "old," not "new," I shall attempt to follow their suggestions. They didn't tell me what to do with "old" websites.

"Thank you for contacting Google Domains.

"I understand that you have a subdomain that you want to add and point it to your website with Blogger. Is this a new website you have with Blogger?

"If so, please follow these steps on how to connect your subdomain to your website with Blogger.

    Log in to Blogger.
Click on the blog that you created. At the left side, click on Settings.
Under Publishing and Blog Address, click on + Setup a Google Domains URL for your blog.
Enter your preferred subdomain and click on Save.
Go to your Google Domains page.
Click Manage across your domain name.
Click DNS tab on the left corner of the page.
Scroll down and go to Custom Resource Records

"Under Custom Resource Records, please follow these steps

    Name: Your preferred subdomain.
    Type: CNAME
    TTL: 1H
    Data: ghs.googlehosted.com

    9. Click Add button.

"Please note that any changes in the DNS may take up to 24-48 hours to take effect across the internet."
