Where have all the G+ers gone?

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres

Where have all the G+ers gone? We don't have solid information (empirical data) to answer that question specifically. What we do have is legitimate statistics that imply where 1/3 of G+ers active at the time of the sunset announcement are going: to the Free Social Network comprised of many network types that agree to use federated protocols so users can connect easily.

What are the major network types? Friendica, Hubzilla, Diaspora, Mastodon, but there are many more that are ramping up as Friendica released support for Activity Pub. Friendica currently supports more federated protocols than other network types allowing what is approaching 2.8 million users the possibility to connect directly and an even larger number of users connecting via blogs or Twitter for example.

How did I get 1/3 of G+ users going to the Free Social Network? Simple math. At the time of the sunset announcement, there were approximately 3 million active users (not counting bots) estimated by multiple analysts. We know there were at least 1.8 million users in the free social network at the time. We are approaching 2.8 million users now. Not all nodes in the free social network report statistics so the number may be larger.

Congratulations to the free social network community! Open source decentralized user owned and run social networks. See you there!
