Comments

  1. Here forums services are like bbpress, vbulletin ,invision power board ,Tapatalk & many others

    ReplyDelete
  2. NB: The options given here are restrictive in the extreme. "None of the above".

    ReplyDelete
  3. The question is what do you have to offer a community and do you want to build.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Edward Morbius Can you suggest me some more option?

    ReplyDelete
  5. MidnightVisions build or using any open social media platform to build one

    ReplyDelete
  6. keshav If you want more options, I wrote a blog post about some open source options: homehack.nl - FLOSS tools to create a forum or community

  7. It all depends, on what kind of community you want to build and your expected audience. Options (mostly) not yet mentioned are:
MeWe, OpenBook.social (currently in Alpha), youme.social, Hubzilla, Diaspora, Pluspora, Friendica, Mastodon, Minds, Movim, Meetup, Tapatalk, Solid by Tim Berners Lee / MIT, tildes.net, Slack.
Or the more old-style usual suspects: LinkedIn, Xing, Discord, Facebook Groups, Insta (with the latter getting a lot of popularity with the erosion of trust in the Facebook mothership (though ironically still being Facebook)).

Obviously you have no knowledge of how Facebook functions.
On Facebook an "open" community is a contradiction in terms.
    Facebook is all malware.
You don't wanna do that to your clientele.
    Obviously.

I have a G+ collection called Google Plus Migration.
This has a lot of good information.
But you need to learn the basics of Facebook.
Which intelligent and self-respecting people typically avoid. It's pure evil on all levels.
Apparently the same goes for Diaspora / Pluspora, in terms of the claim it is anti-free speech.

I have now done platform migration outreach for sixteen million three hundred fifty thousand.
    It's a good thing I'm here.

Google the Facebook issues, or read about the subject on my stream.
    Bottom line:
If a service is affiliated with Facebook, you Do NOT want it.

I spend a lot of time getting people to square one.
    Including here, obviously.

  26. Ok, have a look at Eric's suggestion. It will take work to get it to your liking, but also you will have to advertise it to get people to join. Advertising is just as important as functionality. User feedback from early adopters is critical to keeping people. What you want from a platform may be different than what others want, so know where to stick your ground on suggestions, but be flexible in adopting new ideas, or things you never considered.

All serious suggestions need to be written up as a business case to see how they can be integrated into the greater package. This will identify their weaknesses, and pitfalls as all ideas are a combination of it sounds good on paper, but implimenting it may break other functionality of your site.

Hire the people with the skills you absolutely need. Properly advertise what you are hiring for, and the tools you are using. Listen to the feedback of the people you hire, and the people you don't. Good suggestions can come from anywhere.

    I would not know.
I am not stupid enough, self-destructive enough, or clueless enough to go on Fascistbook.
Your evaluation is appreciated. Looks like there are always more reasons to despise Fascistbook.

Re: "Options (mostly) not yet mentioned are:
    MeWe, OpenBook.social, . . . Diaspora, Pluspora . . ."

    You are amazingly misinformed.
First, I mentioned MeWe to well over seventeen million [ G+ group memberships ]. [ And also Reddit. ]
In different languages and broadcasting to different regions of the world.
Basically all the outreach for G+ platform migration is by my hand alone.

Further, numerous people and numerous G+ groups are making known they are migrating to MeWe.
And I republish their G+ notices at my really neat G+ collection Google Plus Platform Migration.
There are lots of MeWe url links in the generic home streams over recent weeks.

I spent a lot of time mentioning Openbook and Pluspora / Diaspora.

Re: " What you want from a platform may be different than what others want"

Clearly. But lots of people want and need the following:
    Free speech;
    Broad language support;
Large overall platform use, as in the millions, and growing use.
Just the basics, in other words.
To those we add: Maintaining social connectivity.

MeWe has all those. It's growing very large and doing so very quickly.
I am also making known some other platforms in my collection Google Plus Platform Migration.
Including VK, which is huge. It's from Russia.

Re: "All serious suggestions need to be written up as a business case to see how they can be integrated into the greater package."

Use cases and business use cases are important.
I defined a [ small ] set of business use cases for Amazon EC2 cloud computing in late 2008. And so forth. I am a military / federal class systems analyst. And systems programmer.

Basically however what people need is very generic.
And half the challenge or need is to define the MISuse cases.
Fascistbook is all MISuse cases and spyware.
And totalitarian control, as in "You can say whatever we want you to say."
So we begin by Ruling Out Fascistbook.
Which the original poster clearly does not get in 2019! ! !

    +Keshav

    Right?

What I am hearing is that Pluspora / Diaspora is an anti-Free Speech platform, what they call a No Hate Speech platform.
Well, that excludes Chelsea Clinton, who has been directly attacked, in her face, for writing stuff that caused the Christchurch NZ massacre. Such are the Loony Left.
And of course it excludes Trumpzilla. A really big "hater", as Hillary Clinton emphasized. [ We call these people patriots and civic nationalists. ]
And all real public discourse. In other words, not a REAL public platform, not a REAL public square.

Re MV "you will have to advertise it to get people to join. Advertising is just as important as functionality."

I look forward to joining the brand new Neila Rey platform for physical workouts. Neila is one of the major players on this platform, with tons of followers here.
She went her own way, and I expect hundreds of thousands will go with Neila on her new platform.

You are right in the broader and deeper sense.
There was on G+ effectively no real outreach or teaching for Buddhist culture, practice, books, videos, or teachers when I got here in late 2015.
I have now done massive outreach for Buddhist culture and teaching which reaches over five million on G+.
