Google+ Backchannel announcement

Google+ Backchannel announcement This is a project that's been in development over the past few days, and we can finally announce it. It represents a very positive and tangible step forward in working with Google. I'm part of the group, though I don't have direct contact with the Google and other individuals working on issues. Please note that comments should go to the original thread so that Gideon can compile them readily. Comments closed. Thank you. Originally shared by Gideon Rosenblatt Request for Clarifications from Google on the Google+ Shutdown I have developed a backchannel for getting feedback to the Google+ development team and am working with an informal team of volunteers to improve the flow of communications on Google+ shutdown priorities. This is the first public post regarding that process. Our first priority -- and the focus of this post -- is getting clarification on a number of open issues having to do with the shutdown. Next up will be a focus on spec...

An excellent writeup and detailing of what's affected by the API shutdown

An excellent writeup and detailing of what's affected by the API shutdown For those not clear on what this is: An API (application programming interface) is how software talks to Web services. This announcement is not directly related to the availability or shutdown of the Google+ website itself, and Google's own Google+ Apps for iOS and Android are likely not affected, though its probably other Google services (say, Blogger integration, as a possiblity ) may be. The key impact is on third-party applications, and some website integration. If you don't use or make these, you're mostly not affected. The exception is that some G+ archival tools make use of the APIs. These may begin facing challenges by 28 January 2019. Notably, the Friends+Me Google+ Exporter does NOT use APIs and should be unaffected . Originally shared by Peggy K Update on the Google+ API for developers and webmasters: shut down March 7, "intermittent failures" as early as J...

Google+ API Shutdown

Google+ API Shutdown On March 7, 2019, all Google+ APIs will be shut down. This will be a progressive shutdown beginning in late January, with calls to these APIs starting to intermittently fail as early as January 28, 2019. On or around December 20, 2018, developers should receive an email listing recently used Google+ API methods in their projects. Whether or not an email was received, we strongly encourage developers to search for and remove any dependencies on Google+ APIs from their applications... https://developers.google.com/+/api-shutdown https://developers.google.com/+/api-shutdown

Not that I am a big fan of Diaspora* so far - it certainly feels like a few steps backwards in terms of user-experience and polish, in particular for photo presentation and convenient photo upload directly from a mobile device. But then I always had a soft spot for the underdog and I am looking forward to moving from the ghost-town to a ghost-village and hopefully some more interesting people will end up moving there too. A Teleconference on Teleconferencing (1974) (PDF)

A Teleconference on Teleconferencing (1974) (PDF) A largely historical document, though with some interesting observations especially on taxonomies of "conferencing systems" (think: anything that lets 3+ people not in the same location communicate interactively). I'm unable to track down who posted this, though I believe it was one of the contributors to the original paper itself. Thank you very much, you who have been forgotten but not forgotten. ... actually I'm pretty sure now it was Larry press http://som.csudh.edu/fac/lpress/presentations/teleconference.pdf

Administrivia: My Very Extensive Blocklist & re-share reach

Administrivia: My Very Extensive Blocklist & re-share reach An issue as I'm attempting outreach on G+MM stuff: I have blocked a lot of G+ profiles. (And been blocked by quite a few.) I'm willing to reconsider any of those on a case-by-case basis in light of the present shutdown situation, though I'm also still highly aggressive in blocking spammers and other nuisances. I've unblocked a few people on request or reconsideration over the past two months on this basis. This also means that my own posts on G+ may not be visible to a fair share of active profiles. For some materials, such as the G+MM Short FAQ, this means that reach is limited. You're strongly encouraged to link to off-G+ content or re-post items rather than share my posts. Even those I've found hard to stomach may need new online homes. One of G+'s more attractive properties was that it wasn't a particularly good mass-audience platform. That's becoming a bit of a headache n...

I have come to the point that I am seriously looking at alternatives to all my Google services.

I have come to the point that I am seriously looking at alternatives to all my Google services. This link may have already been posted here, I am not sure. It contains several options worth looking into. One thing it does not mention is that the most complete alternative is likely to be a self-hosted NextCloud. It is going to cover Calendar, Contacts, Drive, Apps (with LibreOffice integration) and I understand they are adding a social component too. https://restoreprivacy.com/google-alternatives/

Where are folks planning to migrate their Google+ Collections?

Where are folks planning to migrate their Google+ Collections? I'm currently planning to self-host a blog, since Collections were mostly about social blogging on a topic. (some of my reasons are in my reshared post) Originally shared by Jeff Schiller Well it's no secret that Google+ is shutting down, which means this Collection only has a few months of life left. :( Because I had fun posting random moments of comic book history here, I've decided to use this sad opportunity to start something again, but with a few changes: * I'd like to have more control over the delivery mechanism and the data * I'd like to be more comprehensive (start at the beginning of comic books) * I'd like to post more regularly Feel free to check it out at https://codedread.com/comicbooks/ or add the feed to your local feed reader: https://www.codedread.com/comicbooks/feed/ . I'm well into the thirties but naturally it will take awhile to get back to the Silver Age. Obvious...

Just something to think about: If you're the kind of person who bookmarks things in your browser (like me), you might want to do a search in your bookmark manager for ' plus.google.com ', since all those links will more than likely go dead in April. I've moved all mine to their own folder for review.

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ Q: When is Google+ shutting down? A: April of 2019. Four months earlier than originally announced. https://www.blog.google/technology/safety-security/expediting-changes-google-plus/ Q: Where should I go? A: There is no single answer! This community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most. Major alternatives are listed here: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Established_G%2B_Exodus_Communities Q How do I know where people are going? A: Some have used this form: https://goo.gl/forms/EnkYfrY9HYKkr7iy2 The results are posted here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GYSUTGpmz-2trxhvNyEv_rnNF1GvEf4OW0Lct7KxEiY Others are using #SignalFlare posts, and #googleplus and #gplusrefugee hashtags on their new sites. Funny the biggest costs in business.... building interest through marketing.... acquire and retention of consumers We are here on the front row an...

Points to Keep in Mind Before Migrating Your Online Community

I had this site recently advertise in The Google Plus Meetup on Facebook. I'm told they are out of the Beta Phase and are now accepting membership. Although I'm encouraged by another alternative, I'm hesitant to supply credit card info during signup...especially for a site that claims the fist 6 months are free and will only charge after this expires. Friends+Me / Loysoft Limited -- about the firm, data and credential use, technology, etc.

Friends+Me / Loysoft Limited -- about the firm, data and credential use, technology, etc. Answering a question I'd asked about the firm, its Google+ Exporter application, and credential and data use: 1. The Google+ Exporter application is owned and created by Loysoft Limited a UK based company. 2. We do not store or use or gather any personal info or password. Everything is stored locally on a user computer. The application is using Electron framework, meaning Chromium web browser is a core of the application and provides visualization engine for user and node.js for the app execution. A user of the app is signing in to Google account just so the app can get access to Google+ feed to export. Nothing more, nothing less. 3. No information is sent from the application. We just use sentry.io error reporting, so in case the application crashes an anonymized error report is sent. 4. No, there's no 3rd-party audit of the application. We have a good reputation around here and we do not...

Migrating G+ Communities: Community Portability

Migrating G+ Communities: Community Portability G+MM have been expanding the Community Migration guide at #PlexodusWiki to provide direct, useful, and actionable information. It focuses on: Organising and Timing. Note that timing has been accelerated tremendously. We have 135 days remaining. Preserving content and data. There is now an available Community export tool. The Friends+Me Google+ Exporter can handle both public and private communities. You'll have to pay ($20) for more than 3,000 posts capacity,. There are multiple examples of ported profiles. The developer is active and responsive on G+. Preserving the Group. Section still under development, though Google Forms and/or a mailing list are probably your simplest and most effective tools. Keeping tools simple and effective should be a priority. G+ Community Stats. We've been reviewing old and researching current statistics on G+ communities. I used Google+ with closed communities to collaborate with teams around the world.

I used Google+ with closed communities to collaborate with teams around the world. I have a few paid Google Suite accounts for one domain that I and a few others share, but mostly people communicate via their own Gmail account. If I recreate my communities under my Google Suite Account and share the communities to users outside my local domain accounts, will users with their private accounts still be able to access my company's communities after the shutdown?

Predictions for social media in 2019

Predictions for social media in 2019 Let’s look at some of your best suggestions, with a few of my own sprinkled in: SOCIAL NETWORKS: Monte Thigpen predicts more paid social networks. The conventional wisdom holds that social networks only function if as many people as possible are on them. But it seems just as likely that the conventional wisdom is wrong.... Nik Sharma is among those who think 2019 will see a return to the group chat as our social network of choice. I said this myself on a recent episode of Recode Decode.... Dave Smith says “Apple or Google will try some sort of social network again.” We know former Facebook wunderkind Michael Sayman is cooking up some sort of social app at Google, so consider this prediction endorsed.... POLICY: Will Oremus says “Heads of state with autocratic leanings will use this year’s valid concerns about Facebook as an excuse to block access, nationalize it, or ban it from their country altogether.”... Bret Carmichael predicts we’ll see steps t...

Anyone who has been looking at using the G+API.People.get functions, have you also looked at https://developers.google.com/people/api/rest/v1/people ? This is the non-Google-Plus API for accessing Google accounts. It retrieves all the same data from the aboutme page. It references the same account IDs. It refers to Google profiles as:- Google profile. You can view the profile at https://profiles.google.com/id where id is the source id. Google contact. You can view the contact at https://contact.google.com/id where id is the source id. Where id is the same old account id number. So hang on a minute, what's going on here? I haven't dug into this fully but it appears that authentication and access is via a more restrictive process than the G+API version. But the data is exactly the same. Failures in the G+API privacy controls were given as the reason for killing G+ but here we have what appears to be a more or less identical API to the same data. It's not definitive but it ...

Per Edward Morbius request, this thread is a discussion on what users would like to see for event calendars. Discussions of how they work, issues, and desired features are welcome! Comments from the original thread: Edward Morbius Moderator +Shelenn Ayres: If you could expand on the types of calendar integration you have in mind? Say: Event scheduling. Alarms. Adding to/checking others' calendars. Launching actions (chats, videos, etc.) Anything else you're thinking of. Shelenn Ayres +Edward Morbius example: Friendica has an event calendar available in the default UI. Any event any of my contacts create will show up on my calendar. It is also optionally exportable so that others can download my calendar. Reminders are available and time zones adjustable. There are only two things lacking so far: image button for event posters and recurring event capability. The former is handled via theme so that is not an issue. We have to see if the latter is in the next release or still...

Outreach Work For G+ Migration: Time Is Of The Essence

Outreach Work For G+ Migration: Time Is Of The Essence Summary: I have now reached somewhere up to seven million members of G+ specifically concerning G+ migration. This is in formal terms. In actual terms the number is of course a small fraction of that. However - and this is important - the signal propagates broadly and sometimes very actively so much is actually accomplished in real terms. By me. And also by myself. There is a partial connection and very small win for a very major group G+ Beautiful Pictures . I give that communication below. It is an example for outreach where the communication is extremely constrained by formal group rules. This major group has no migration strategy. So I have contacted the owner on their group pinned thread. Of course I will always direct people here where possible. However sometimes communication is severely restricted and therefore incomplete. Discussion: I spend much of my waking hours working on communication and social issues. Like ...

I thought what is the best for G+ users.

I thought what is the best for G+ users. But I couldn't find it. MeWe has to open user profiles. But they will not open it. Minds has to make filters for communities. But they will not make it. It's simple but they will not do it cause it's their DNA. Tumblr also has to support automatic submit for communities. This is a good chance to social media companies. But I think they are missing it. So, I can't suggest the answer to G+ users. G+ point is community. But I can't know where will they go to. If someone has got the answer, he has to suggest the best place for G+ communities. And has to ask to social media companies. I guess MeWe and Facebook is the best for G+ community owners. And people will follow it. But they are not enough. So, I guess G+ users have to be a multiple social media user. I guess some private profiles will go to Minds and tumblr. But communities will go to Facebook and MeWe. Anyway, community is the problem.

I just created a MeWe account and haven't done anything with it just yet but already have a problem with the privacy options. I don't mind allowing contacts to share posts and chats but it'd be nice if the site understood the difference between sharing text and sharing/downloading photographs. Not everyone will agree but I'd prefer to keep as tight a lock on my photos as possible.

Recommended Practices: What you should be doing NOW, mid-December 2018 edition

Recommended Practices: What you should be doing NOW, mid-December 2018 edition In light of both the elapsed two months of the G+ sunset and Google's "expedited* April 2019 shutdown, we've updated our recommended practices. The outline's the same, urgency is greater , and we've added a few contact resources. These are recommended practices you should be doing NOW. As of December, 2018, given the announced shutdown of Google+ effective April 2019, time is rapidly running out. If you have not already begun the steps below, start them now. You, your Circles, and your Communities should: Exchange permanent contact information with contacts and groups. Make a pinned Profile post, it is easiest to find. Update your profile "About" page with forwarding addresses. Any addresses you don't want public can be shared in private Circles or Communities, or directly. Let me start this by saying that I'm not a programmer.

Let me start this by saying that I'm not a programmer. I have done the Google Takeout as html and find that it just offered links to posts - not what I had actually written. To access that, I would have to log in and go to the community. Once Google + shuts down, I won't have access to those communities or those posts. What are my options? I'm sure this has been covered, and I apologize of I've overlooked it, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good news for Federation fans.

Good news for Federation fans. Matrix (or more specifically, Synapse) servers are now visible on the The Federation info website at https://the-federation.info/matrix%7Csynapse . The website collects lists of servers for various federation protocols (like Matrix, ActivityPub, Diaspora, etc). If a server outputs usage information, it also shows some historical information for servers and projects. I have been worrying about servers melting the polar ice caps and global weirding since I landed on social media fluff. Infinitely more so when, in a time of minimalism and decluttering, people are determined to move every last little scrap of dead G+ to a new home. Time for a digital detox. For me certainly. Cape Town's electricity is mostly from polluting coal-fired power stations up north. We have been tipped back into loadshedding, and hugely grateful that pumped storage hydroelectricity can usually scrape us thru. https://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/23/technology/data-centers-waste-vast-amounts-of-energy-belying-industry-image.html https://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/23/technology/data-centers-waste-vast-amounts-of-energy-belying-industry-image.html

Pitfalls and Opportunities in Google Data Takeout

Pitfalls and Opportunities in Google Data Takeout I've just linked my "Streamlining Google Data Takeout for Google+" guide. This still leaves much of the process manual. My recommendation to Google is that any manual processing be reduced to the bare minimum possible. This means that either Sane Defaults or URL-based parameters for specification (or both) would help tremendously. I've made three Google data takeouts so far. * The first failed entirely. * The second failed to complete and I didn't download it. * The third I'm still downloading (it's taken >24h, given failures), and it turns out I'd not specified all relevant components. * I'm going to have to make a fourth. Streamlining the process will reduce total load on Google's provisioning systems. Google could also improve documentation though this is secondary to improving the process itself . Where at all possible, make processes that don't require documentation . (But don...

Streamlining Google Data Takeout for Google+

Streamlining Google Data Takeout for Google+ Just posted at #PlexodusReddit , based on the discovery (and some further experimentation) that it's possible to specify Google products on the Data Takeout request URL itself. Generating and using Google Data Takeout is complicated. We've simplified one part of the process by specifying the products you need to take out to create a complete Google+ archive on the URL. And that would be: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/circles,plus_communities,plus_one,plus_pages,profile,stream As always, when following third-party links to Google account services, verify that the link is what it appears and does what it says. We're providing the bare, rather than a formatted link, to make this clearer. What this link does is go to the standard https://takeout.google.com site, and then specifies a custom request, with the following sources ("products") selected: * circles: Your Google+ Circles. Essentially contact in...

Following Tags in Friendica

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Following Tags in Friendica Tonight I made a new contact who shares a love of mine: modeling in 3D. I saw they tagged a post with the hashtag #Blender so I want to follow that hashtag. In the image, you will see what I entered in the global search box and the result. There are actually many other posts underneath their post with the #Blender hashtag in them. I like this result so I click the plus icon under my profile pic to follow that hashtag! #Friendica #tips #tutorials

Categories vs Hashtags in Friendica

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Categories vs Hashtags in Friendica I mentioned using hashtags in another post using the tag cloud. Friendica also has categories you can use as well. This is quite useful in community forum posts to categorize types of posts. How do you find them and what do they look like? The image on the left shows them just above the tag cloud in my status page or wall (found when I click the home icon). Notice the ones without the # in front of the words? Those were created when I gave at least one post a category when it was created. The image on the right shows the different colors for a hashtag versus a category. I will illustrate the usage with a community forum on another post. :) #Friendica #tips #tutorials

One week into MeWe and all I can say is it has its pros and cons.

One week into MeWe and all I can say is it has its pros and cons. The pros seem to outweigh the cons so far, so that is good. But the cons are nasty. Literally, nasty people and racists that seem to have congregated there because they were banned from Facebook. So beware. I have already used the block feature a lot. I do like MeWe's ability to blend groups and chat, which does not exist here. Also the app is fast and performant on Android.

Google's Datacenters on Punch Cards

Google's Datacenters on Punch Cards There are several discussions going on about Google Data Takeout, and of the total demand this puts on Google. Data are not readily available, though we've got a few broad outlines. xkcd's Randall Munroe tried to pin down Google's total data archive about six years ago, in 2013, and came up with about 10 exabytes of disk-equivalent storage, and likely another 5 EB of tape. The doubling rate is roughly every 2 years, so that's probably somewhere in the ballpark of 80 EB and 40 EB now, using very rough numbers. In ballparking total Google+ data storage, I'm relying again on Stone Temple Consulting's March 2015 public user activity estimates (based on my own earlier estimates, and methodology), which suggest a core of about 50,000 highly active users, and another 1-30 million or so who are occasionally active. If the average of 50 million users has 100 MB of G+ data, that's about 5 petabytes of data, and I suspect t...

Uploading Photos and Videos into Friendica

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Uploading Photos and Videos into Friendica By clicking the triangle beside my profile photo in the upper right, I am able to see what photos or videos I have uploaded. When I mouseover the + I see the tooltip that tells me that is how I upload a photo. Friendica has tooltips for everything to make it intuitive! In this case, the photos you see were automatically imported from my G+ mirror post. I will likely want to create a folder for them. Oh that is a hint! You can optionally also create folders of posts you want to save too ;)

Sorting Friendica Network Posts

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Sorting Friendica Network Posts Your network page is your default page that loads. What is it? Your network page is a list of posts made by your list of contacts like your home stream in G+. In this image you can see the links at the top give you options on how to sort the posts by commented last, posted last, and so on. This selection will also be remembered next time you load your network page. Quite handy!

Adding You Blogs and other Social Networks to Friendica

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Adding You Blogs and other Social Networks to Friendica You can integrate your Friendica account with G+, Blogger, Twitter, and more! This image shows settings for social networks where I've added my G+ account. Every public G+ post I make shows up in Friendica after a short time. Our admin has been tweaking the time (last I remember it was 10 minutes).

Administrivia: Updated Google Data Takeout link to pre-select for Google+ products

Administrivia: Updated Google Data Takeout link to pre-select for Google+ products The Google+ Mass Migration Sidebar has numerous links, one is to "Google Data Takeout". I've just edited this to pre-select all products potentially associated with a G+ account, to the best of present knowledge: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/plus_pages,circles,stream,plus_one,profile,plus_communities,plus_photos That is, the link includes: * plus_pages: Any "Pages" associated with your G+ profile. * circles: Your G+ Circles. * stream: All G+ Stream activity: posts, comments, polls, etc. * plus_one: Your "+1"s on external Web pages. * profile: Your G+ Profile * plus_communities: A listing of G+ communities. * plus_photos: Your G+ photos, organised by album. There may be more information in this selection than you need or want to keep But there should not be any G+ content that can be archived that is excluded . In other words: this...

Moving a Friendica Account to Another Server

Originally shared by Shelenn Ayres Moving a Friendica Account to Another Server One feature I love is you can sign up on any public server now to learn to use Friendica then move to your preferred server anytime! You control your existence. :) I look forward to trying it! Here's how: This is an experimental feature Go to "Settings" -> "Export personal data" Click on "Export account" to save your account data. Save the file in a secure place! It contains your details, your contacts, groups, and personal settings. It also contains your secret keys to authenticate yourself to your contacts. Go to your new server, and open http://newserver.com/uimport (there is not a direct link to this page at the moment). Please consider that this is only possible on servers with open registration. On other systems only the administrator can add accounts with an uploaded file. Do NOT create a new account prior to importing your old settings - uimport should be used i...
