Where are folks planning to migrate their Google+ Collections?

Where are folks planning to migrate their Google+ Collections?

I'm currently planning to self-host a blog, since Collections were mostly about social blogging on a topic. (some of my reasons are in my reshared post)

Well it's no secret that Google+ is shutting down, which means this Collection only has a few months of life left. :(

Because I had fun posting random moments of comic book history here, I've decided to use this sad opportunity to start something again, but with a few changes:

* I'd like to have more control over the delivery mechanism and the data
* I'd like to be more comprehensive (start at the beginning of comic books)
* I'd like to post more regularly

Feel free to check it out at https://codedread.com/comicbooks/ or add the feed to your local feed reader: https://www.codedread.com/comicbooks/feed/. I'm well into the thirties but naturally it will take awhile to get back to the Silver Age.

Obviously by using a self-hosted blog, it's going to require more effort to be social, but I couldn't think of an alternative that met all my requirements :-/. Perhaps if a decentralized social network becomes successful and has a feature like Google+ Collections one day I'll migrate the data there. And I'll continue to look into WordPress plugins. I'm open to ideas though!

  1. I will be preserving three of my collections on my Wordpress blog. The others aren't important enough for me to keep, or were already primarily reshares from my blog.

  2. There's a recently posted survey on general relocations:

There's the ongoing question of where to put Communities (not Collections). As part of that, the #PlexodusWiki has a G+NCDB -- the Google+ Notable Communities Database. I've decided to be generous in defining "community" as also some Collections of note. Those can be added to the list:

(I'm aware the format is funky. Suggestions for improvements welcomed.)

  3. And: my general recommendation would be for blogs. Though there are collections-oriented sites, e.g., Pinterest, etc. I've found those largely underwhelming.

  4. Alan Bland How do you plan to migrate collection posts to WP blog? Through some software or manually posting each post on blog?

  5. Deepak Ravlani Friends+Me Google+ Exporter can export directly to Wordpress, Blogger, and other platforms. That seems the best bet presently.

  6. Deepak Ravlani Yes, I plan to use the Google+ Exporter by Friends+Me.

  7. I am not going to try and keep them. I still have my Blog, website galleries and Flickr. What G+ got me was a far wider reach than any other platform. When it closes it all goes. Then I go back to a rather solitary social media existence.

  8. Alan Bland Thanks wanted to get confirmation whether you're done with it or intend to do later.

Edward Morbius Thanks, yes I do know about it. Just trying to get views of users who have done it, since there is no link preview support for WP import as per sample blog provided by Founder of software.

  9. Deepak Ravlani I've done a trial import of one of my collections into a non-public Wordpress instance. It was mostly good. Captions on photos did not import, so I would have to enter those manually. And a few of the posts did not import correctly, so they would require manual attention. The software is still being developed, so I will wait a few months before I do the import to my public blog.

  10. Alan Bland Yeah, that process makes sense. Do make sure to import in a month or two because as per latest G+ post, they'll deprecate G+ API in 90 days, which will impact this software directly.

Also, as stated in my previous comment, posts with link previews only get imported with those links and not images. Which makes collections that have mostly link previews look boring on WP blog.
