  1. Pluspora is just one node (server) in the diaspora* network. You can use any diaspora* client to connect to it. The most prominent one at the moment is probably dandelion, which is available on F-Droid here: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.dfa.diaspora_android/

  2. Any Diaspora app that lets you specify the pod will work. The top one (DNW) works for reading. Has a bug that crashes it if you try to share to it on Android. You can also search for dandelion* on the F-droid app store.

But to be honest I prefer just using the mobile browser. I use Chrome. Again, this is all based on my Android experience.

  3. You really dont need any app. Web browser works fine.. uses less battery energy and doesn't hog up space on your phone.. "cleaner" experience. Just mho

  4. ... speaking as someone who does this sort of development, a browser really is your best client for diaspora, the way it's put together. Which isn't to say these apps are bad , I haven't looked at too many of them - and there are some things which could use some fixing - I intend to fire up a Fedora -> Ruby development stack and contribute where I can - but honestly, of all the replacements for G+ I've looked at, I like Pluspora the best.

But it's kinda strange. I put a post up on diaspora, saying I wasn't really feeling the sense of community I do over here on G+ . Stirred up the mud over there. Some people weren't happy with me saying that. But honestly, I still don't feel that sense of community, even after a month or two on Pluspora.

Maybe it's kinda like blogs, "social media" the way it's organised today is just a mess. Facebook is a sewer, I'd never go there. Twitter is a bunch of yellers, the world's Freudian Id on display. That'why Trump does so well there, he's a friggin' Man-Child, right?

I loved G+ and I'm losing it and I'm already grieving for it. I lost someone to a bad stroke some while back. He never spoke again. Almost wish he'd died right there, what followed that stroke was cruel. I'll try to make Pluspora / Diaspora a home, but it doesn't feel like that, yet. It's nobody's fault but that's the way it is.

  5. Dan Weese I can only agree with you, I've tried a lots of sites, pluspora included and I don't find my new Google plus.

  6. "That sense of community" on G+ took years to form. I'd been on since July 2011. It wasn't until 2013 that things started to gell. Then Google torpedoed themselves in the foot with the G+ / YouTube #Anschluss.

    Time, Geeps.

  7. Edward Morbius I haven’t been able to figure out how one is supposed to find people to follow on diaspora. In fact, I can’t even figure out how to follow people (or rather how to unfollow them. I think you follow people by adding them as contacts). I keep getting random posts in my pluspora stream from people who aren’t in my contacts. In a month, I’ve managed to find two interesting people from those random posts. Meanwhile, I’m up to 97 [edit: “mostly”] interesting people in MeWe. Very easy to find, follow, and unfollow people on MeWe. I don’t have a feeling of community yet in either place, but I can see how to develop one on MeWe. No clue how that is supposed to happen on diaspora. There seems to be no emphasis whatsoever on features allowing one to find other interesting folks.

  8. Brian Holt Hawthorne Hashtags. Discussions.

Somewhere on G+ I landed on the notion of search + threads, with the critical piece being that you don't follow people on account of interesting comments but on interesting threads. That is, hosts, not guests.

(There may be some overlap, but threads is the critical element.)

I'm still circulating on Diaspora myself, but this is my basic strategy.

My Aspects strategy is similar to G+ and Mastodon: hi/med/lo + provisional. Also a "plussers" Aspect for G+ migrants. A few special-purpose ones (pod admins), mostly for organisation.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Dan Weese ill look for you Dan!!! I find a lot of comments against gplus over there but we'll likely outnumber the pretentious snobs when gplus ends so they can all hang at hubzilla or mastodon where they will feel more at home

  10. Not sure about Diaspora options in contacts but in Friendica, you can do a search on interests which will peruse other Friendica profiles for common interests. Other than that, I find people by going to global search and entering @ then their name to see a menu of choices or full identity address if I know it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Shelenn Ayres I’m not looking for specific people or even people who share specific interests. I’m looking for interesting people.

With Google+, I found interesting people either by having someone suggest them (back in the circle sharing days) or by seeing them post an interesting comment on the post of someone I follow. Then I would check out their profile, read their public posts, and if I was interested, follow them.

With MeWe, there is a feature for someone to suggest people for me to follow, I can add people who make interesting comments, and I can see my contacts’ contacts and add them. I can’t look at their posts prior to adding, so I find myself adding people, waiting to see what they post, and if I don’t find it interesting, I can just uncheck the box so their posts don’t show in my stream.

Diaspora is basically an empty room, unless the pod owner turns on community spotlight posts, in which case I see those and add the people if they are interesting, but can’t seem to turn off community spotlight posts from people who aren’t interesting.

I haven’t tried Friendica yet. Time to add another one.

  13. Ouch. Friendica has no mobile app. The default theme was basically unreadable on mobile (light gray text on white, too small) so I tried to change themes. The next one I tried was worse, and now I can’t change the theme since the drop down is behind the logo for the server.

Sorry. Friendica is clearly not ready for prime time. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/1RHHaxPoTiCSUoFL3sZIFlFyq6xefQR_GnhrArcci9EZOdeBYLDF-oBW03reBk_S1rHtNMAnhE4zOk53CTIy4YwatjLshQ10u7Mu=s0

  35. Edward Morbius We used to have Follow Fridays on G+ after circle sharing went away. Definitely a good idea for networks which don’t offer any mechanism for people to find one another. Of course, I’m not sure how it is a “social” network if it doesn’t have features for meeting people.

I think that’s what is bugging me the most about Mastodon, Diaspora, and now Friendica. They all seem like “social” networks created by geeks with no social skills and no concept of how real people relate to one another.

  37. Brian Holt Hawthorne not true... there are mobile clients for Friendica

    ReplyDelete
  38. Shelenn Ayres No mention of any iOS apps anywhere. Searching for Friendica on the App Store yields no results. Accessing friendi.ca on my phone shows a mobile friendly website with a download button, but it is for downloading the server code. The other button says “Try it” and takes me to the public server list. The search bar at the top of that list apparently searches something else, as it doesn’t show servers if I search.

So, either there is no iOS app, or someone is doing a really bad job. As I said, not ready for prime time.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Brian Holt Hawthorne actually what you said was 'Friendica has no mobile app.' chuckle iOS is not the only mobile OS

That said, I am not a mobile user and would not ever own an Apple device. There are enough client apps out there that are open source someone will surely write one. Maybe even you!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Shelenn Ayres And that’s the problem with open source projects. “Someone will surely write one. Maybe even you!”

I did a lengthy stint writing software, but moved on to other things back in the 1990s. Now, I want systems that just work. Despite all of the promises of open source, most projects either have between zero and one active developers, or have numerous developers, all of whom are interested in making the software meet their idiosyncratic needs. The beauty of software written by businesses is that it is someone’s job to figure out what their customers want. This is why I prefer subscription or premium-based services rather than ad-based. I would rather be the customer than the product. And, I would rather be the customer than the developer, too.

I’m not saying that in theory open source projects can’t create wildly successful software. It is just that more often than not, they don’t. I have nothing against what we used to call the hobbyist model (oh, back during the days of single-board computers you had to build yourself). It just doesn’t often meet my needs.
