Among the more frequently mentioned G+ alternatives at the Google+ Mass Migration community, and others, is MeWe, billing itself as "The Next-Gen Social Network" and the "anti-Facebook": "No Ads, No Political Bias, No Spyware. NO BS. It is headed by professed Libertarian CEO Mark Weinstein.
As the site reveals no public user-generated content to non-members, it's necessary to create an account in order to get a full impression. I thought I'd provide an overview based on recent explorations.

ReplyDeleteHigh five for an excellent report! It helped answer some of my questions about the integrity of the place given that it promises some pretty idealistic individual rights goals. I was thinking it might be some kind of honey pot, but given the background of the owners and associates, maybe it is indeed trustworthy. Now, as far as the predominant user culture and it's technical features go, those might be another matter, but so far it looks promising, with lots of room for healthy growth.

But I found pro-science groups and friends, a minority, but protected in groups.
A Warning!
Some have already been banned, without warning, and some of them reinstated, without notification either.
The only common story seems to have been talking religion with strangers.
It's not a good idea to cite Bible verses to show it's incoherence, the other party complains and you're out...

✌🏻✨So far, I personally found #diaspora to be most comfortable and social among all types of users and interests. So the search continues !!💃
Mostly, I've found that cloned groups that I'm on with G+ are already at MeWe. It's been the platform where I've seen the least batshit crazy stuff on. Of course my groups are focused on Doctor Who, Star Trek and Open Simulator, so perhaps that focus is the reason why.
ReplyDeleteWhereas I have had issues over on Diaspora where instead of only focusing on groups I've received lots of posts for folk that's nothing to do with the groups. It may just be the different paradigm operating here. In Diaspora you add contacts to an "aspect", but often that aspect isn't always reflected in everything they post. It may be that subscribing to hashtags is the way on that.
In MeWe, once I got used to the interface, I found I could easily select group feeds, read them only, mark chats to "read", and not bother with other stuff. In other words, if there's a plethora of nutters and ratbags over there, I generally don't see them (not discounting the possibility that I might be considered a ratbag myself)!

ReplyDeleteNathan Woodford Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, subReddit, Instagram, all the big ones, have recently started to hit harder, particularly on nutjobs, so they searched Breitbart-style, Incel and Milo-minded new fields.

By protecting their NeoNazi Kekist friends from public scorn, they also protect our groups from troll attacks, we can remove them from our lives/groups.

I get RT, Al Jazeera, & others I can't stand, and also Guardian & BBC, where Kekist trolls post Trumpist comments they think are funny, they are on other Diaspora pods, hard to control.
I guess we can block them, but it is still frustrating.
Nathan Woodford The claim made by MeWe is that there is no political agenda at the site. This may be true.
ReplyDeleteWhat's clear is that there is a pronounced political bias to the site. Among others. I haven't gone looking for other social indicators, but would suggest that the site skews young, male, highly conservative if not reactionary, religious (and tending toward fundamentalist Christian, possibly also LDS), poorer, paranoid, and southern US states, generally. That's an impression reached based on the groups presented.
There are few groups indicating non-white, non-Christian, non-American (notable exception: Australia) experiences, viewpoints, or cultures. Contrast the G+ Communities data which has extensive non-Latin charactersets (many in Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, that I can recognise, I plan on doing some further analysis on that).
The third topic in the "Travel" category is "Texas". The colleges and universities section lists not Ivys, or state schools, or even large regional colleges, but the South East Conference (football), and a Christian campus organisation. For several of those categories, as I was compiling them, I'd thought "OK, 2-3 is enough", but as I scrolled down through the listings, the gold just never stopped flowing.
In other cases -- say, Cyclists, a topic you might find at an online discussion site of interest -- there was in fact a community. With, on a site claiming 1 million+ users, 26 members.
The question of active users is another that I can only edge into sideways. The site's been active since 2016, claims 1 million members, but the largest open groups are <20k members. I'm suspecting that even that likely overstates the monthly actives, though I'd have to dig further to get a good sense of it.
I dug to the extent I could into the founders and backers (the chief scientist had previously worked with Weinstein, in the late 1990s / early 2000s), to see if there was some obvious political bent there. I don't generally see that, though there is a strong self-help theme running through most of the major backers. This may explain either the blindness to the dynamic they've created, or even a possible motivation toward it.
I'm leaving open the question of whether or not the site's clear socio-political leanings are deliberate or incidental, though both those questions are interesting. The more salient one for G+ Refugees is whether or not the culture is likely to change. Here my sense is that communities tend to start as either open and generally high-affinity to outsiders, or close and low-affinity to outsiders.
Open/high-affinity groups -- say, Usenet of the 1980s or Facebook of 2005, with strong representation on selective college campuses, youth, and professional classes -- tend to regress toward the mean as others are attracted to the site. Facebook was once Literally Harvard, and is most certainly not that now.
Closed/low-affinity groups -- say, Voat, or Gab, or as it now appears, MeWe, with openly xenophobic, racist, reactionary, outsider-hostile, and typically not particularly compelling-to-typical-outsiders communities -- tend to boil off the more tolerant members they did initially gain, and not acquire others. They regress away from the mean, and become yet further polarised, descending further toward their initial tendencies.
This, and the bias situation, may also explain MeWe's active recruitment of G+ refugees: they see a situation they'd like to nudge, perhaps, and are thinking that fresh blood might shift the site's direction. Having seen such attempts in the past, I'm not optimistic.
Mind, that's Space Alien Cat and Armchair Psycho-Sociologist Dred Morbius talking. Not my fields, little formal study in the area, and I claim no authority by virtue of the fact I am writing pseudonymously. But there's a substantial amount of literature that seems to come to similar conclusions, from both groups and communications perspective, not to mention the fascinating intersection of the two. Of which I've only started becoming aware myself in the past few years. I'd have to do some digging to turn up titles, but suspect the sketch I've given in the last four paragraphs above is reasonably accepted amongst a substantial share of the field.

Reddit has (recent-ish) metrics on its communities through a third-party site. The top 20 are: Announcements, Funny, AskReddit, Today I Learned, Science, WorldNews, Pics, IAmA, Gaming, Videos, Movies, aww, Music, blog, gifs, news, Explain Like I'm Five, Ask Science, EarthPorn, and Books. Memberships range from 14.2 million to 21.4 million in that range.
Large audience in media tends toward fluffy. Reddit actually manages to include a bit of meat in its top-20, bolded above, and you can find substantive material in several others -- the AMAs, TiL, and ELI5 subs aren't consistently meaty, but frequently are.

Yes, there are cesspits on Reddit. They tend not to make it to the top listings, and Reddit have started actively removing them when they do. The premise of MeWe is that the site won't introduce such manipulations, but there seems to be a consequence to that policy.
Or CircleCount's listing of the top 20 G+ communities as of April, 2016. It's not what I'd consider intellectually rigorous, but it is diverse topically and culturally, and what I'd consider relatively healthy:

Which btw might also require rethinking what it means to thrive in cyber space. Mind: the "go totally insular, throw up walls, plug your ears, and sing kumbaya" model also seems to fail, though differently. Mostly: it tends to go insular itself, fall into groupthink, and give rise to petty rivalries and annoyances.
There are few human institutions which have any longevity beyond a few decades or centuries. Amongst those: cities and towns, academic institutions, and religions.
(There are quite probably others, these are the ones that stand out to me.)
There may be either commonalities or distinct survival modes amongst these.
Notably, all three will survive other failures, most especially of businesses and governments or empires.
NB: For those who've not yet worked it out, I intentionally left most judgements out of my Trip Report. I did comment on the onboarding process, and a few of the technical details of the site, which I think are problematic and fairly uncontroversial.

Edward Morbius quick reply, you reminded me of Geoff West's youtube thing on universal time. He goes into the pattern of longevity and where growth is regenerative and crashes or linearity is less than one (forgive esoterica) and system lives long. About to sign off, but noted it just in case it's relevant. Cities live long, corporations live short, etc. Zzz.

Edward Morbius Yes, seeing some of the extremist on MeWe makes one wonder how things will unfold. I always liken things to the wild west in the 1800's. So, if you were to do your report on San Francisco, you would have seen the same slimy seedy sides of the city as the communities on mewe. But life goes on, good prevails, somehow...no? Anyway, yes you have a good point and i'm wondering how all this social influence fervor will go. I'm still tending towards the optimistic side, but after seeing a little data myself, i do shudder at the possibilities. Here's a couple screen shots from mewe illustrating some of your concern:

I'm hopeful that MeWe will grow into a good social site, but the ominous warnings of yours, Edward Morbius, that MeWe is beginning to look like the anarchists and extremists of 4chan and Voat is worth considering. Here's a couple items of nasty stuff i saw on MeWe last night.

I'm hopeful that MeWe will grow into a good social site, but the ominous warnings of yours, Edward Morbius, that MeWe is beginning to look like the anarchists and extremists of 4chan and Voat is worth considering. Here's a couple items of nasty stuff i saw on MeWe last night.

Apparently the site has mechanisms to detect and/or prevent this kind of spammy recruiting activity, which indicates the site does indeed have some free speech limiting management tactics.

Edward Morbius Time will tell, but I see lots of possibility for a healthy MeWe. It partially depends on how well the management and the users cope with things.
ReplyDeleteA lot of what you described really is focused on young males who are easily goaded into angry rebellion.
The current US and European social consciousness is highly skewed towards FUD because trump has encouraged and because there is a lot of disaffected and alienated young men. But whether that is temporary or an enduring movement we don't know. I remain optimistic.

So out of the top 20, 8 are about other social networks, 5 (including the top 2) are about competing social networks all owned by #Facebook, and 2 of the 4 Arabic ones (#4 and #17) are about pinups, if not porn.
That's... not good. I hate to say it, but it really does look like all roads lead to #Facebook. As bad as they are, they're still an established community hub with enough critical mass to prevent people from leaving due to a few bad actors. About the only thing which could make another network viable at this point would be for Facebook to ban enough 'moderate' users to sustain one, because the 'radical' ones will just go off and continue to form smaller and smaller tribes like what happened with the #OSR.
This situation really is starting to look hopeless.

Therefore, recently, I have gone back to my roots (so to speak), and returned to where I started communicating across the Internet in the first place: USENET.
Specifically, prior to using Google+, and prior to becoming dissatisfied with Facebook prior to switching to Google+, I used to read and post messages on USENET newsgroups and mailing lists using a newsreader (such as Forte Agent or GNUS).
In particular, I used to read and submit posts on such newsgroups as comp.lang.scheme and comp.lang.haskell, and on such mailing lists as Haskell-Cafe via gmane.comp.lang.haskell.cafe.
Currently, many of these newsgroups can be used via an ordinary browser via Google Groups (e.g., comp.lang.scheme is available at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/comp.lang.scheme).
The advantage of USENET newsgroups is that most of them (with the exception of those that are marked as "moderated") are unmoderated; this means that there is no censorship. Furthermore, in many cases (at least with academic newsgroups), the intellectual level is much higher than even on Google+. The disadvantage is that, precisely because there is no censorship, there are also many unfiltered posts containing undesirable content--this content is customarily filtered out using settings customizable on a newsreader (such as Forte Agent or GNUS).
So far, the results have been satisfactory. Although the USENET does contain many posts with undesirable content, in most cases, these can simply be ignored; furthermore, many users who reply using USENET tend to write rather lengthy posts containing rather unusual, if occasionally extremely eccentric, viewpoints.
At minimum, I have never been bored on USENET. (Occasionally, there is the random mad scientist or mathematician who writes some extremely condescending remark that makes me want to throw the keyboard full-force at the monitor; however, fortunately, that usually only happens once or twice a year.)
