It's been mentioned several times before, maybe not in its own thread but surely in comments. I personally have no interest in it. For me it's just another alternative to Twitter, and if I wanted a free and open source alternative to Twitter I'd just go to Mastodon.
The 2 minute video on the main page explains a lot. To be honest I'm pretty impressed. You can do longer form posts, follow others, follower counts aren't displayed, and people can't see what you like, only you. Pretty cool features. Simple and straightforward.
