we must be careful what we wish for . . .

Fantastic description of what we're all experiencing today on the net. Things are changing and here are some of the reasons why. I think some of the best reasons.

  1. Sounds like people prefer their social media to be "local", the way things used to be.

  2. Strange omission of YouTube which is a strange kind of social media to kids

  3. Funny: I never thought of YouTube as "social media."

  4. Steve Vasta You should. Different vibe, but still.

  5. Steve Vasta for the kids it seems to be one of the big social media formats now. Video, responses, critiques - yeah it's a real social media format.

Google seem to be trying to push it more that way too.

  6. The fact that by some measures YouTube is larger than FB, and is video-oriented (the new hawtness for adverts) has much to do with this.

Google initially tried using G+ to leverage YT (or vice versa). They've since realised they already have a killer social network, but didn't recognise it as such.

  7. Perhaps I'm unclear about what comprises a "social network" or "social medium." (You don't much see the singular form used.)

When I hear the terms, I think of F******k and its predecessors, MySpace and Friendster (R.I.P.) -- a place for people to keep in touch, and where they can post photos or videos if they want to.

YouTube is a site for posting and viewing videos. Granted, there's the capacity for back-and-forth dialogue about the videos and related topics. On the other hand, I wouldn't, for example, be posting something there about my dinner plans, or about a book I just read. So, to me, it's "just" a video site.

  8. Steve Vasta I understand, but again my point is that the concept is slippery and broad. Maybe a better question is: What do you expect to do (or be able to do) with or on social media.

I've been trying to nail this particular jelly to a wall for a while now.
