A little test/demo/observation

#1 Activity "here" has suddenly slowed, robots gone, I'm guessing the majority of people with a long sustained presence on G+ have already re-settled & are busy settling into new homes, new communities.

#2 It feels rather nice to see, re-acquaint "old friends" from G+, and know that the mutual desire to stay connected goes far - be it to a pod/instance of Federation (e.g., Pluspora, where many G+ers are heading), or a blog platform or MeWe - which to be fair and honest, is exploding with new users from G+, with many photo and discussion groups, and many bells & whistles people love (e.g., chat and emojis) - but no real public visibility, and no real formatting options. But it is pretty and easy, like Facebook or G+ .
So - this is not about me, except trying to share... I've been focused on salvaging hidden (album) images "here" and Collection photos which I posted only on G+ (and don't want to sift through gazillions of taken-out files to find).

I won't repeat all my long comparisons between the big 3 I've been immersed in - G+, Pluspora, and MeWe, as I've written tomes in all 3 places. Pluspora/pora* spots let you find G+ ers easily via hashtag, like #gplusrefugee - though there are no "groups" per se. MeWe - and Flickr too - do have groups now, specifically welcoming and helping new arrivals, coming in now by the boatload. Friendly, helpful, and many, many smart, creative, interesting people - same as here, but with MUCH more activity now, thriving and growing every day. Many options.

I think many are breathing easier now, having heeded all the ever-shortening deadlines before our collective extermination. With so many thanks to those here - too many to name, but especially the huge effort of the admins, moderators and participants "here" in this community. It has served a terrific purpose. And the quiet now, IMM, reflects how many are already "resettled".

Here's the test. I've been relocating/rescuing images in collections & albums (some deeply hidden now), and experimenting with how they display, sometimes simulating a main photo and side link/thumbnail to an article or links, sometimes an entire mini-album. Now I can't share MeWe things except to MeWeans, while Pluspora has a "public option" I've used, and gotten a surprisingly wonderful response from - old and new photo buddies.

So here, if it works as I think, is just one sample post on Pluspora. Just to give an idea how a one-photo post looks. (Granted, the display may vary, depending on the device & screen size, from phone to HD jumbo.) But WYSIWYG - here is a sample.

Good luck to all who are busy saying goodbyes and hellos, climbing that learning curve, and settling in, either starting new lives, or tending to relocated (digital) lives, or working still on capturing and repurposing G+ data and/or memories. As the clock ticks, and some of us ghosts watch.

Google Countdown Clock says 33 days, 11 hours until G-Day. And the G-Bomb. And we have only a few days until for many G+ is history, as widgets disappear along with easy access.

Speaking of history... the link/photo below leads to a Pluspora post.

"Context and Perspective". Best luck to all, many thanks for all the great times, inspiring discussions, feedback, laughs, and creative offerings.

Goodbye Google+. It was wonderful for a long time. But #googleisevil and things change. :(

  2. Yes, yes, I know all the evils there (and here, and on Facebook too). People need to exercise care where there are risks.
I advise my friends who insist to use MeWe or Facebook (I will not do FB), to "be careful" and slow if you join MeWe, and not join public groups or make contacts you do not know, to avoid robots. You can choose moderated groups (like the photo groups where I have been reposting G+ albums and collections, with many good G+ refugee photographers, and getting wonderful feedback, meeting some fine people, etc.) So YMMV.

That said, I prefer the "aspects" and formatting of Pluspora/diaspora* and I wish I could convince more friends to go there... but it is work for them to access and format and post, and no ability to send a simple +, like, or emoji. Important to some, as on FB and G+ it is so easy to quickly react via emoji. So I am looking to Pluspora more for conversations and postings of articles, and (for now) MeWe is a place I can re-make albums - but only for the gardens, not public. A big limitation.

But, in the end, "different strokes for different folks", YMMV, and "caveat emptor", to trot out the big cliches.

One of the rules of the great Albert Ellis (Father of rational/emotive, cognitive therapy) was that if you want to be miserable, insist that others will be and do what you want, rather than what they want. If your friends &/or work are all in one place, it's not going to be fun trying to argue them away to where you'd prefer. So... (sigh)...

Pick and choose where and with whom you interact online. Good to have choice.
