Sold on one of the Federated Social Networks?

Sold on one of the Federated Social Networks? How did you choose? Mastodon has by far the most subscribers, but it is a "microblog." Friendica has fewer subscribers, but I think has been referred to as a "macroblog," perhaps more similar to G+. It looks as though "AGPLv.3" is the emerging standard. Should I steer clear of the others? Image from [ https://the-federation.info/#projects ] Click to enlarge.

  1. The advantage of federation, of course, is that if you can find a place to join, you are able to connect with many other instances in the federation. I run Pluspora, a Diaspora instance, but we talk with a number of GPlus folks on Friendica and Hubzilla. We would run a Friendica instance, but the software for the number of GPlus refugees we are hosting (>10,000) would make it cost prohibitive. This is something I don't see factored in in the chart. These instances and pods aren't being funded by multi-million dollar corporations. So choice can sometimes be limited to what is available from what you have.

  2. Jeff Diver Frendica (groups) and Hubzilla (forums) support communities. They both talk to the Federation and Fediverse. Hubzilla has nomadic identities to boot.

  3. I installed a Hubzilla Hub, connects fine to Diaspora, Friendica, Mastodon. But the Fediverse still has it's problems with protocol interoperability, aupdate times of posts and comments on instances other than the posters, and, and and. Anyway I think it is the best solution we have at the moment , as it is not controlled by any company, it is not a walled garden and it's open source.

Groups and forums are not yet really compatible between the platforms, that is still a major drawback.

  8. Despite having read some stuff about the federation side of these tools, I'm yet to understand in what way they talk to each other. In practical means, what does it translate to?
Can I mention someone by its handle name even if it belongs to another tool on another node? In what way do posts and comments get from one node to another? (actually, do they?). Can I follow a bunch of people independently of where they belong to in the fediverse?

  15. Mike Noyes "nomadic identities"? I'm unfamiliar with the concept. How does that give Hubzilla an advantage over Friendica? I don't know what an "S2S bridge" is either. (Sorry to bug you with all this! All I really want to do is get my info out there. Before the G+ termination I never questioned what was going on behind the scenes. I hope to return to my regular posts on Victorian trade cards asap.)

I thank you for your shared article but, despite making it clear that currently this is all quite a mess :-), it doesn't explain how the interoperation translates to the way we'll use these platforms. I'm still quite confused. Can I have a username somewhere and use these platforms with it as long as they support that interconnectivity? Is that it or there's more to it? Can I subscribe content from multiple sources and watch all the posts flow in my personal feed?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jeff Diver From the Hubzilla project page...
Nomadic identity means true ownership of online identity. With Hubzilla, you don't have an account on a server, you own an identity that you can take with you across the grid. You can clone a channel across multiple hubs for resilience against network failures or censorship, or you can completely move a channel from one hub to another, taking your data and connections with you.

One thing to note is this ability depends on Zot.

  18. Chose Friendica: replaces all G+ activities out of the box, integrated event calendar, customizable user interface for accessibility, easily integrates with blogs and Twitter, actively developed, strong support community, mature code base, federates with most of the Fediverse, Federation, and Activity Pub network types (greatest reach to 2.7 million existing users), posts can be fully visible to the Internet without an account.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Francisco Nogueira The underlying server to server and server to client protocol will handle this for you. Now each UI will differ.

Note that the Wikipedia table, in my previous comment, shows near universal development around ActivityPub.

I have saved my stuff (and will again), but my decision on where to move it (if I ever decide to) will come later. The problem is that when G+ disappears, all the good advice about this will disappear with it.

I am going to enjoy G+ until it dies. After that, I don't see any point in uploading it to a place that my followers and those that I follow will never cross paths again. 😐

  49. Mike Noyes Friendica groups can be used like circles. Community forums exist on Friendica as well. Finally, Friendica category tags can be used to emulate collections. Alternatively, the advanced news or celebrity account types can be used for news feed or collections that are follow style only (no interactive comments). Hubzilla has similar capabilities but the UI is for a different use case.

  60. Mike Noyes I tested the new release but I am not reporting to the riot matrix folks about an issue with the jitsi widget. It goes nowhere because they are not responsible for that code. I could not find the specific jitsi project used so I did not report the issue.

Because I have found so much of the open source community not responsive on accessibility issues (for many different reasons), I am going to do some testing of a different solution where we would have control over the code so we can fix the volume in the future - other projects have priority at the moment.

In a nutshell, unless a project 1) has a disabled person on the dev team; 2) has someone on the dev team with a disabled person's needs in mind; or 3) is funded with accessibility as a requirement for universal design; the needs of disabled users are generally an afterthought. Having spent the past 20 years attempting to get people to use inclusive universal design with little success in open source, I am not going to waste time doing the same thing expecting different results. What I am willing to do is fork projects to make universal design part of the roadmap.
