Easy sign-up?

Easy sign-up? Facebook and MeWe have uncomplicated signups. Register & you're in! Are Fediverse platforms Friendica, Hubzilla, etc. more complicated? Will new users face choices ("opportunities" for old hands but "guesses" for newbies) they did not have to make with FB, etc.?

  1. I found Pluspora (part of the Diaspora* Fediverse platform) very easy to sign up to. Much easier than Facebook or Twitter.

  2. All I had to do was sign up. Have accounts on pluspora and hubzilla

  4. For me signing up is a one time thing, it's not a hurdle regardless it's easy or complicated.

  5. Fediverse is extremely straight forward.

  6. Jeff Diver I don't think sign-up is an issue. Now what to do after you log-in is. Connecting to other users on the same server, across servers on the same software, and across the Federation and Fedivese. Then there are communities, tags, etc. that you can follow. Top it off with each software using its own terminology, and people can get frustrated.

  7. Facebook make it easy so you will sign up so they can spy on you and sell your info.

  8. Diaspora has a nice feed appearance. Photos cover most of the screen which is good for displaying artwork and photography.

  10. Mike Noyes Hmm...This is what I thought I might be hearing sort of between the lines in some earlier discussions. Thanks for making the situation clearer for me. While I think I could navigate some of these choices with modest success, I am concerned that frustrated followers may not think the benefits worth the hassle.

Have you been in the Fediverse long enough to see improvements in this regard? Is there a consensus that connecting to other users is something that needs improvement?

  11. Jeff Diver People have a tendency to become familiar with what they use, and forget the difficulty they had when they were new to the platform. How many people did you have to explain Google+ Circles, followers, blocking, etc.? Each new platform used takes some effort to learn.

At the base level connecting to other users in the Fediverse is just user@sever. For bridges the syntax varies a bit. Now directory search of users is more spotty.

  12. Jeff Diver I'm mostly finding locating people to be fairly easy. Many people I know posted info here about their profiles on new systems, and search on those systems isn't difficult.

A bit harder is posting, in some respects. It's more controllable, and that inherently means it's a bit more complex. But all the additional controls are optional, really, and you can get a basic post made quite simply. It's when you want to add a distinct title, or include fancier formatting, that some learning of differences from G+ is going to be required.

Both pluspora and hubzilla offer a preview option, however, so you can see what the end results of your effort will be before clicking the "post" button. Frankly I am not sorry to not dealing with G+ never-worked-properly formatting. It's still crap all these years later.

  13. Scott Gomez You say posting is a bit harder. How is participation? Do your posts inspire not just "likes," but worthwhile dialog as here?

  14. Jeff Diver I haven't either been using it enough not been on either sure long enough to have an opinion yet. I've still been mostly using g+ until it dies.

That said the ability to write one post on either platform, and have it appear on both pluspora and hubzilla is nice. Potentially broader engagement without a lot of extra work.

It also appears to me (bearing in mind this is an early opinion) that there are people from more countries regularly posting, which I consider a definite plus.

  15. Basically the phonbies who scroll ceaselessly on their Facebook feed are the equivalent of a rodent in a hamster wheel.

  16. Shawn Andrew Had to retrieve your comment from Google's confused spam filter. Apologies for the delay in posting! Might have been the hashtag.
