To anyone worried about replicating the function of "Circles" on another network -- as I myself was -- the closest thing I've found are MeWe's "Groups." they can function exactly like your cirrcles -- where followers can "view only," with comment privileges, or you can set it up so that followers can also post their own items to it.

Just posting this as an FYI -- as for me, myself, I've been really concerned about how to replicate the way I've become accustomed to sharing here on the Ploos. If you want to compare the two, my MeWe acct is https://mewe.com/i/reverendjesus; you can compare my groups to the communities on this profile.

  1. I just did a friend request for you on mewe. Any friend of the shark is a friend of mine.

  2. Will you try out #Openbook also? https://openbook.social is soon to open for alpha, later for beta testing.
And are you on pluspora or any other of the fediverse?
And what about friggin’t FB? https://www.facebook.com/thomas.rohde.poochakannen

I’d like to keep on reading you but MeWe is currently not an option.

  3. Thomas Rohde My FB is for family and meatspace people, I'm not this guy on there. You can keep seeing me on Reddit (u/ReverundJesus), or twitter (@realRevJesus).

  4. Friendica emulates circles by default plus has community forums and more. You start with two "groups" like you did on G+. One is called Friends the other is called Everybody. You can create new groups and put contacts in groups just like with circles.

  5. See, I for one have no interest in replicating "circles". That was a novel feature of g+ that never made sense to me and I never really got used to. I'll be just as happy to go to these new platforms and see how they do things natively.

  6. John Douglas Porter The people who use circles in G+ perhaps use them to share a post to specific circles rather than a public post to whomever Google decides to show it to. This is easily replicated in Friendica for example.

  7. Pluspora has "aspects" that are identical to circles. With MeWe groups, am I right in thinking the user has to go to the group to see posts there, rather than having them in their stream? (It's a while since I've logged in)

  8. Jesus Christ you can set up a page on FB and be This Guy.

  9. John Douglas Porter Now, OTOH, I got "Circles" from the beginning, although I didn't use them much -- not that many people I knew actually posted on here. I'm going to miss Communities, though.

Just for the record, I'm bookmarking various sites that people are discussing -- yes, including Pluspora, Friendica, the dreaded MeWe, and others -- for possible future examination. At the moment, since I've started the blog and the Instagram supporting it, it's all I can do to keep up with those.

  10. I'm with Steve Vasta - Circles didn't make my socks go up and down. My targeted posts were put in a Community or a Collection ...I turned off the "Auto-follow" in the latter.

I wish one of these platforms would come up with a variant of Collections. MeWe has "Pages" a paid feature that is a troll-magnet.

  11. John Soanes for those into communities and collections, Friendica supports them as well plus news feeds and celebrity account types

  12. Shelenn Ayres Yeah, I haven't been on there much lately. I found the posting UI a little clunky, adding #hashtags in particular. I'm on isurf.ca and I don't see how Communities and Collections are implemented. Maybe I'm in the wrong Pod?

I liked Klaster.Me for it's editing tools, a choice of a Blog-style post was nice. I thought I found my home as you can create "Pages" (like a collection) -- but you can only have one ...meh!

Warts & all MeWe is so far the front runner

  13. John Soanes Pods are what Diaspora folks call their nodes. Friendica just calls them nodes. There are some improvements that were made for usability this month and more coming next month that makes it less clunky.

The posts listed pinned at the top of my G+ profile will show you quick tips on how to use category tags to create collections, how to enable multiple account types so you can have community forums, news feeds, etc in addition to the equivalent of collections and circles.

Finally, the user interface unlike most other social network solutions is entirely customizable by the user. You can change colors and content layout to suit your use case. This is a huge accessibility feature as well.

If you need more help beyond the quick tips, there is built in documentation and multiple community support forums. The quick tips I put together will help you get to those too :)

For integration with other social networks, you can export from Friendica to blogger, WP, dreamwidth, and Tumblr as well as import/export/mirror with Twitter for example.

  14. Shelenn Ayres Thanks, I've shared it ...so I can find it later.

I don't care what they call things, just that the UI is intuitive, as most platforms FAQ and other documentation sucks. I don't have the patience for figuring out mouse-traps.

I am of simple needs. I need a clean looking interface, a way to sort / segregate topics/posts and and limit people's ability to steal content. Engagement would also be nice.

  15. John Soanes Engagement in the Fediverse/Federation is not lacking for sure ;) I remember when I started on G+ many years ago and it had a learning curve to get things setup to work the way I wanted. Then they slowly broke things I liked but I stayed for the engagement. This is my last corporate owned social media home - hopefully the Fediverse will be the forever home I need. The neighborhoods are great!

  16. Shelenn Ayres I have been poking around Friendica, haven't posted yet. I also looked at the links. I can't figure out how to create a Collection -- I have not desire to administrate a group.

  17. John Soanes One way is you add a category tag (collection name) to any post you want (hashtags are not the same but can also be used). Then when someone visits your profile and clicks a category tag they will see all your posts with that tag (your collection).

  18. I have found "circles" in G+ to be a very useful tool; one that I hope to find a functional equivalent for elsewhere. I don't post frequently, but circles have enabled me to fit the post to specific recipients. For example, posts primarily of interest to family members, a limited group of friends, enthusiasts for a variety of hobbies/interests, or other set of posts you don't want everybody to have to slog through. 😀

  19. Shawn Jones Pluspora calls them "aspects" but they're the same. I'm sure other Diaspora pods (and probably Friendica and Hubzilla) also provide

    ReplyDelete
  20. Friendica "groups" are Friends and Everybody by default so this equivalent to circles. You can create new groups like you can create new circles. Then you can share posts to specific groups like you can do with circles.

Friendica community forums are like G+ communities. You can find out how those work in the help document or in the pinned post at the top of my profille.

  21. I initially used circles here, buut found that it relied on known more about the contacts than I did. Are they into Trek, are they Pagan? I had no idea. Rather, I went with Collections, because those reflect my interests and people could unsubscribe from them if they didn't want to read that.
