Archived in Blogger Posts prior to 26 February 2019 in G+ Mass Migration have been downloaded via Google+ Exporter and archived at [ https://gplusmigration.blogspot.com/ ] No attempt has been made to index or organize, but you can get easy access to the information using "Search this Blog" and the labels.

I have not resized images to fit or done any of the "finishing touches" I would do for one of my other blogs. I think there are over 1,000 posts going back to the beginning of the community, but I have not confirmed that figure. At least some comments have been included. You can comment further on each post if you wish. Comments will be moderated through Blogger. Post anonymously or identify yourself in the text of the comment. (Not as slick as G+!)

This is offered to you as a learning resource and should give you a good idea of the Exporter results you might have to refine for yourself if you use G+Exporter [ http://bit.ly/GooglePlusExporter ] to retrieve your data. All I did was add "Search this Blog" and "Labels" to the standard basic sidebar. Hope you will find it useful!

    Looks good!
    I've used it to download 15 communities/collections totaling 3,190 public and 7,008 private posts and 12,672 pictures that total 5GB.

  2. Phwoar, those labels!!!
    Thank you for doing that!

  3. Andrew Hatchett Glad you found it useful! I like the fact that you don't have to be the owner or a moderator to download community posts in G+ Exporter. All you have to be is a member of the community.

  4. Aakheperure Merytsekhmet You're welcome! Telling Blogger to display labels is especially helpful when doing large transfers from G+ with G+ Exporter. I have yet to sample them to see if they are picking up some of the related topics we have pursued here among our comments. (Not that we ever wander off topic! ;-)

  5. P.S. I have purchased a license key for Google+ Exporter. The free edition is adequate for most, but if you're going to go hog wild with your downloads, you'll appreciate the increased capacity of the paid version. Plus, it rewards Alois Bělaška for taking the time to keep improving the product. Thanks, Alois!

  6. Jeff Diver I manually added labels to my Collection export because the tool I used only picked up hashtags >_<

  7. Your Archive (blog archive bottom left on your sidebar) there are
    1185 posts in 2018
    and 511 in 2019

    ReplyDelete
  8. Aakheperure Merytsekhmet but I prefer a short well curated list of labels, myself.
    If the label is only attached to a few posts, which can so easily be found either by 'search this blog' or even more simply writing the wanted word / s straight into the search box next to the URL.

    Congrats, neatly done
    Have you also done for Profile Posts ?
    Thanks

  10. Diana Studer In my particular case, (which is probably somewhat unusual) my manually created labels illustrate the subject, era, find spot, institution where applicable and other useful labels (for myself at least) but also in particular my prefered spellings(Egyptian transliteration is a beast unto itself) A scroll through the labels would save people having to manually type the many variants of Egyptian names into the search box themselves if they use the labelling as I had intended, and also perhaps show them other search terms they might like to investigate.
    (I did note this in my Using this blog page).
    So while it was a pest, for me at least, the manual creation was probably the only way to do it.
    I also had to get a friend to import the information I have on Blogger using one of the tools discussed in this Community as the process was well beyond my technical scope - something I think is sometimes forgotten in some discussions and something that Google has singularly failed to address in any meaningful way.
    My thanks, again, therefore, to the people in this Community for the helpful advice and discussion!

  11. Ifinder Ifindi No, I hadn't thought of that. I don't believe that is an option in G+ Exporter.

  12. Thanks Jeff Diver
    You mean G+ Exporter only for Community Posts, not for G+ Posts (Stream or Collections)
    So, we have to relay only on Google official Takeout, is it ?
    Thanks, Please

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ifinder Ifindi My good experience has been with G+ Exporter, which does both Community Posts and Collections. For other G+ products, you may want to use Takeout. I invite others to weigh in here with their experiences.

  14. Aakheperure Merytsekhmet your manually applied labels have deliberate and academic value.

    (I am thinking of a pretty picture with a few words blog post - which has a string of labels applied for each of which, there is almost no content. I try to imagine a reader looking for That Label - and wonder if I would then be satisfied with the attached content) For the writer, the reader, and the search engine.

  15. Jeff Diver if you add the following CSS snippet, it should prevent too wide images from overflowing over the sidebar:

    .post-body img {
    max-width: 100%;
    }

  16. Very useful code. Where to add it ? at template html ?
    Filip H.F. Slagter

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jeff would have to add it to his Blogger template, or you could apply it as a #userstyle through a browser extension such as Stylus.

  18. Jeff Diver I had completely missed what you'd done here when I first saw this post. This is awesome, thank you.

    We've been having occasional moderator discussions about how to continue G+MM post-shutdown, and this looks like a strong contender, if you're up for it.

    1. How easy is it for you to run updates of the data extract / import to Blogger?

    2. Are you interested in having this as an official continuation archive?

    3. Is / can you enable login via Google userID? That should allow users to pretty much continue using the site as is.

    4. Can you / are you interested in adding more moderators / editors to the blog, and/or is that even possible? I've only very abortively looked at Blogger, so I'm not familiar at all with its capabilities or interfaces as an admin/author. Though I suspect I could sort that out as needed.

    Also: I don't know where you buy your labels, but you're going to need a whole lot more of them for that blog ;-)

  19. Filip H.F. Slagter Excellent suggestion! I wish I understood more about coding. I shall investigate how to introduce that CSS code into Blogger (which, as one who has only basic knowledge of html and none of CSS, will be interesting).

    I hope folks will be patient as I learn. Reaction from the relatively few remaining Community members has been positive. My intention is to review every post. Eventually. No deadline.

  20. .post-body img {
    max-width: 100%;
    height:auto;
    }

    Works better, because it maintains aspect ratio.

  21. Edward Morbius Great questions!

    1. Running updates of the data extract / import to Blogger is something I have ruled out. G+ Exporter can run updates easily, but sadly participation this month before we part company on G+ has dropped off to the point I am having trouble contacting even the Mods of the Dilettante Community. People who ask how they can help are requested to spread the word on the social media platform of their choice.

    2. Official continuation archive? I would say that isn't up to me, but to Community members. If they approve of what I'm doing, perhaps that is what this will become. If somebody comes along with a better idea, that's fine, too. Reaction so far has been positive.

    3. I don't believe Blogger was set up to function very well as a Community, but I'm no expert on Blogger, so there may be a way for us to "surprise" it into doing something it was not designed to do. Enabling login via Google userID? I'm going to have to think about that. Folks can comment on individual posts using their Google identity. People who have no Google affiliation can comment anonymously (I'm moderating those comments, thanks to a tip from Diana Studer.) One of the reasons I liked G+ was the degree of participation I experienced here. So far, my blogs draw few comments by comparison. Maybe this one will be different.

    4. Adding more moderators/editors is helpful in large G+ Communities. Since I don't know what I'm doing, I can't be certain that would be helpful at this point. Other than those I create, no new posts will be added. I am maintaining the Blog as I did my Collections, as an archive which I hope others will find useful.

    5. Egad! Some of the labels assigned by the photographers sure were creative! Certain ones, such as "photography" and "photos" and "art" will be eliminated as I edit. Others, indicating the photographer, the title and the category assigned by the Community will remain. I may add locations if known and other categories while eliminating mumbojumbo made up of wordsallsmashedtogether.

    What I need now is more good advice such as that given in these comments. Thanks so much, Filip H.F. Slagter Ifinder Ifindi Andrew Hatchett Aakheperure Merytsekhmet, Meraj al Maksud Alistair Langsford Alois Bělaška Meraj al Maksud, all those who have commented here and those who are just listening on the side!

    It would also be helpful to have assistance reaching Dilettante Community members who are now on other social media platforms.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Edward Morbius Review or archive? It will be an edited archive, particularly when it comes to some of those creative, but unhelpful labels. My new banner calls it a "retrospective" which is defined as "an exhibition or compilation showing the development of the work of a particular [group of] artist[s] over a period of time." (See how I wiggled out of that one! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. You can add more contributors - editors to Blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Diana Studer Thanks! I will look into this. I don't think I have ever seen this done. Have you any examples I can look at? (I never hosted a Community on G+, so this would be new territory for me.)

    I never thought of the Retrospective as being a new community. If we started a new photography community on Blogger, we might gather many contributors. How could we manage things if it became popular? Some photographers think nothing of posting multiple images per day once they find a place to display their work.

    Is there a way to distinguish between editors and contributors on Blogger, replicating the division between posters and moderators in G+ Communities?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Meraj al Maksud how to use? Every post should have a "search this blog" and a "Labels" section in the sidebar. . Search for your favorite photographer or type of image. Both should produce results.

    If you are viewing on a mobile device, I suspect from the image I see on my Blogger theme page, this may not be so easy. The sidebar apparently is not displayed. In fact, the mobile image of this Blog looks horrible.

    Can anybody help me with this? I use a laptop, so I'm pretty much "blind" when it comes to seeing how this blog works (or in this case evidently doesn't) in the mobile environment. Can I rearrange blog elements to make the mobile version work better?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Filip H.F. Slagter Thanks so much! This is just the kind of hand holding I need to find my way around! The image was very helpful!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jeff Diver my only experience of this was being added to a Chicago blog which has since gone dormant. My blog is mine.
    Multiple authors is not common.

    Maybe Peggy K could help?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jeff Diver when Blogger first enabled mobile friendly I changed mine. Can't find the setting now. I think it has become the default and only option?

    For mobile users the sidebar is hidden behind the hamburger icon (as it is on my blog for my zoomed in laptop view) It is there, but your reader 'knows' that the hamburger is a menu, I have dutifully learnt.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jeff Diver I recommend using one of the latest themes (Soho, Emporio, Notable, Contempo), because the design is responsive. That means there isn't a separate mobile template and on smaller screens the sidebar is hidden by default but can be viewed. (My blog uses Notable, which I customized)

    It looks to me like you are using one of the non-responsive themes which has a pretty limited mobile template.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah, a different, more recent, template should solve a lot of issues.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Diana Studer Thanks for the link! I hope changing the theme is a relatively painless process.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Peggy K Sounds like a theme change is in order. I'll see what I can do.

    Do you have any experience with multiple blog authors? Is anyone using a blog as a Community?

    I get few comments on my blogs, but good stats on visitors. I wonder if that is because comments are way down there at the bottom of the page.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Peggy K , is there a way still to add Brand Accounts to Blogger blogs, now that you can no longer assign a password to a Brand Account? It's a bit of a shame that to assign contributors you need to send a link to an email address, rather than that you can directly invite an account.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jeff Diver changing the theme is painless.

    But you can if you choose spend ages tweaking and adjusting every little detail. Without having to do the actual coding. If you want to change That, you need to track down where That is, and can make it precisely as you want it.
    (I still need to follow Peggy's instructions to customise the Page Not Found)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Is there an option to order the labels by size (i.e., how often they are used)?
    If not, I could write some JavaScript that could do that if you want. Maybe even also hide those with less than 5 or so uses, to trim the list down a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Filip H.F. Slagter People seem to be using labels as an index, so alphabetical arrangement is preferred.

    Thanks for the suggestion, but for the moment I'm using the labels to find things myself and want to hold up on hiding anything. May I take you up on your offer later maybe? Some of those one-time specials should be disappearing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Filip H.F. Slagter no there is not. You can only use a Brand Account identity for Blogger if you enabled a password for it back when that was an option.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Peggy K that's a shame. I guess I'll be submitting some Feedback, though that'll probably be after G+ shuts down.

    Jeff Diver fair enough:) Just poke me if you need some CSS or JS advice :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jeff Diver multiple blog authors is pretty easy to enable. You do need to invite authors with their Google Account email address. You can share your blog with up to 100 accounts, which includes private readers, authors, and administrators. See the access options here: https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/42673

    support.google.com - Control access to your blog - Blogger Help

    ReplyDelete
  40. Also remember your Blogger profile can be different than your Google Account identity, so you don't need to have a separate account to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Peggy K Thanks for the link! The Dilettante Photography Community had thousands of followers, but probably not more than 100 active posters. In terms of a possible Community, the wheels are churning here.

    I've posted a warning across the top of the Dilettante Retrospective blog indicating I intend to change the theme tomorrow. You make some convincing arguments in that regard, Diana Studer! Hopefully I won't screw things up too badly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. G+ Mass Migration gplusmigration.blogspot.com - G+ Migration posts via Exporter would be a good candidate for multiple authors/administrators. Send your email address to jeff(at)arnoltradecards(dot)com if you're interested, either as author or administrator.

    I wouldn't mind sharing or even handing over administrative duties on gplusmigration. Administrators can:

    Add or remove other administrators (me included!) and authors
    Change the blog's settings or template
    Edit or delete any posts

    Meanwhile, I'm thinking I should change the theme for gplusmigration to a more modern interface, perhaps "Notable." Also, while there is no case for updating Dilettante, there would be a case for keeping gplusmigration current until the end. (What I need is a longer "to do" list!)
