Posting screenshots here so people can see what Friendica looks like - users have the power via themes under display settings to change the way it looks for them and how the content is laid out more than G+ and FB ever allowed.

Feature-wise it replaces G+ and FB out of the box. In addition, I will make this an all in one post with the links for everyone from users to hosts. You can use the browser to access it or an app for mobile devices. Others don't need an account to see your public posts. You have full control over your content and privacy.

First Steps (support and finding a node to create a free account):

Mobile Clients (Android, Sailfish, Windows, Linux):

Advanced Tips from Me:

1) Use Groups to replace Circles so you can post to specific groups of contacts (friends).

2) Use advanced account type Community forum to replace Communities. (The
global support forum is one of these and available for anyone to join.)

3) Use advanced account type News to replace Collections. (This type will only allow followers. If you want interaction you can post on your regular account type and use hashtags so people can search on those.)

4) You can have advanced account types under your main account or as separate logins. This is your choice completely. If you have a separate login for a community forum account type, you can make yourself admin of the community forum.

5) In the global search box (for the entire federated web space), there are four ways to use search:

Type @ followed by a name or identity address to find certain people
Type # followed by a topic to search for posts using a hashtag
Type ! followed by a word to find community forums
Type text to search for posts including that text

6) Fill out your profile first entering keywords you want people to use to find you. You can search on topics or local and global contact directories to find others. Once you have a few contacts, you can look at their profile to find others listed publicly you may have in common. Optionally, one can choose to not show contacts or be listed publicly.

7) Anyone can view the global list of public posts from any Friendica node without an account by choosing global community. Local community is for posts on your local server node.

8) You can change your user interface layout, colors, etc from: profile > settings > display. The node I am on has 4 themes installed with the default theme fully customizable and built on bootstrap so it works well on mobile without the need to download an app for the tablet or phone.

I will be making some video clips and the dev team is going to make better tutorials I believe. They are testing a new release candidate. One can host their own or signup on another node.

There is also a pre-configured Friendica server available in the Amazon Marketplace for those who want to pay for hosting there that is very cheap ($55 USD a year I believe). I have not tried this yet but plan to.

For those wanting to host their own for 100% control over their existence or for friends to have an account on:

  1. J P Sousa Paula I see link previews in Friendica on top posts just fine.

  2. J P Sousa Paula Nerdica.net and social.isurf.ca - iSurf Social (home) are both running the last stable version but yes it depends on what the admin of each has enabled. Worst case, you can run your own node enabling what you need. :)

  3. J P Sousa Paula I plan to use Hubzilla and Friendica both for the different use cases they were designed for. There is no need to have only one point of presence.
