Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ -- version 1.1 Dec 20, 2018

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ -- version 1.1 Dec 20, 2018

Q: When is Google+ shutting down?

A: April of 2019. Four months earlier than originally announced.

March 7, 2019 for Google+ APIs, including Google+ Sign-in and integrations for web & mobile apps.

https://www.blog.google/technology/safety-security/expediting-changes-google-plus/

https://developers.google.com/+/api-shutdown

Q: Where should I go?

A: There is no single answer! This community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most.

Major alternatives are listed here: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Established_G%2B_Exodus_Communities

Q How do I know where people are going?

A: Some have used this form: https://goo.gl/forms/EnkYfrY9HYKkr7iy2

The results are posted here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GYSUTGpmz-2trxhvNyEv_rnNF1GvEf4OW0Lct7KxEiY

Others are using #SignalFlare posts, and #googleplus and #gplusrefugee hashtags on their new sites.

Also check a user's About page or pinned posts on their streams for forwarding information. Create these yourself for others to find.

Q: Can I save my G+ content?

A: YES! https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/plus_pages,circles,stream,plus_one,profile,plus_communities

• Select JSON format where possible for each item.
• Select the archive format, zip file is suggested default.
• Select an archive chunk size. If unsure, leave the default of 2 GB.
• Select your delivery or storage option.
Other tools for archiving exist. Currently https://gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me is the only one we've tested.

Q: Something went wrong creating / downloading my archive!

A: See reporting and troubleshooting tips: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Data_Migration_Process_and_Considerations#If_you_have_problems

Q: What should I be doing as a G+ Community owner / moderator?

A: Communicate and coordinate with your community:
https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Migrating_Google%2B_Communities

Q: Should I delete my Google+ account or Communities?

A: You could, but we don't suggest it. Doing so will remove all content you and others have made, making it much harder for others to save their work.

Q: Can I simply convert to a G Suite / Corporate Google+ account?

A: Short answer: No.

Long answer: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/FAQ#Q:_Is_there_any_way_to_continue_using_Google.2B_after_the_sunset.3F

Q: What if I have more questions?

A: See the full FAQ: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/FAQ

  2. how do you choose a pod/edit your profile for diaspora?

  3. forty winks I wasn't being funny.
There are resources about the pods/instances out there that you can look up. Most of them are interest based to help narrow down ones to focus on. Other factors come into play such as how active the pods are, how many members are already in it. Diaspora even has a wiki addressing your question: https://wiki.diasporafoundation.org/Choosing_a_pod
    wiki.diasporafoundation.org - Choosing a pod - diaspora* project wiki

  4. forty winks Pluspora is a good starting point. I'm on Joindiaspora, since 2011.

  5. Don McCollough Your second answer was more helpful than your first.

  6. forty winks I've been thinking about your question, it's a fair one, and I don't think we're doing a good job of answering that.

For Diaspora, the general options are:

    * Join one of the popular pods.

    * Run your own pod. There's a G+ community that helps with that, Di Cleverly and David Thiery have set up a bunch of stuff on that.

    * Go to where you friends generally are.

Risks of pods include knowing and trusting the administrator, continuity (will the pod remain up / have good availability), performance, moderation.

    Don McCollough: Any thoughts yourself?

  7. i have been trying to find a way to stay in contact with friends after it’s all over

  8. Edward Morbius so far, I've been on Pluspora. I've not yet experienced moderation on it yet, so not sure how that part works. Performance seems good, as it has quick load times and seems light weight.

  9. Don McCollough They have a mod team, listed on the Wiki AFAIR. Di, David, Nate Weaver (I think), and another one or two.. Who take the situation seriously.

  10. forty winks Seek out Di Cleverly if you plan to go Diaspora. She is patient and will help you.

  11. Edward Morbius we have five mods and I'm trying to add one or two more. We don't get too many reports. Most folks are very nice and well behaved. We have an occassional untagged NSFW, or spam report.

  12. Don McCollough You seem to be knowledgeable about diaspora* so i would like to askj you a couple of related questions.

I am a new member of pluspora and this is the first time I have heard the term "pod" in the context of diaspora*. It seems that the only function of a "pod" is to store my personal data. I tried to login to the diaspora* website but it did not recognise my pluspora login data.

    - Do I NEED to choose a pod?
    - Does this mean that I have to create a separate diaspora* account?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Roy Gardiner you don't need to log in to diaspora* if you have a pluspora account. Everybody is linked. Just search a hashtag or for a person you would like to find and you can access any member of diaspora* pod from your pluspora log in. Friendica too. If you add that person, their public postings will appear in your stream henceforth. If they add you back, everything you post public and to the aspect you added them will appear in your stream.

  14. Di Cleverly Better info than I had. I've removed my comment as it was incorrect. Thank you for shining some light on this as I've been a tad confused as well.

  15. Di Cleverly Many thanks for your advice. So, just a final question: is pluspora a "pod" in its own right, where my personal data is stored?
I am just trying to understand the terminology....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Roy Gardiner pluspora is hosted on an end-to-end encrypted private virtual cloud server. The server itself is physically located in Spain. Our host is one-and-one. The data is backed up every night and overwritten. We allow no access to any third-parties, unlike many other social media. We have no investors.
However, if your public post is reshared, that post may end up on someone else's server, so just keep that in mind. Is that helpful?

  17. Di Cleverly Yes, I think that's very helpful!

  18. Di Cleverly Many thanks for your valued information!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Di Cleverly I should also have mentioned how very much I am enjoying pluspora. Thank you for providing it. I can heartily recommend it to others!

  20. Roy Gardiner yay! That is awesome to hear! That was our main reason for starting it, just to have fun! :D
