  1. I'm on the waiting list but how about the desktop / laptop usage? I loved G+ because I had full access to it through both mediums. I despise instagram because its mobile only. I hope #Openbook work fine on computers too!

  2. Here we go:

    What about the web version?

We’re still aiming to ship it together with our first mobile version, however… The web version prototype was done in our earliest days, our ideas, thoughts and features for the platform have evolved massively.

Bringing the early prototype up to speed might not be as easy as we currently believe it to be, so… unfortunately, no matter how remote the chance might be, there is still a chance web version might arrive a bit later than the mobile app.

  4. Kerem Go That could be a problem: I don't own a smartphone, and my feature phone cannot use non-proprietary apps.

  5. Kerem Go from what I read today the desktop version will take a little longer, they don't know exactly how much.

  6. Benjamin Russell Same here Benjamin! I also don't own a smartphone and not considering it. I have a tablet but still not comfortable with Instagram's mobile only thing. The thing I like with G+ most that it was working full on both.

  7. Joan Egert Yes that date being unknown gave me some cold feet about it.

  8. Impressive update, though I'll note that the release still isn't hammered down. When I emailed Openbook a few weeks ago, they were trying to beat Google+'s accelerated shutdown date.

I'm also curious about the shade thrown on Ello. I'm aware of the management change there, but not of bigger moves (as with Google, something of a radio silence there). Anyone have the scoop?

  9. Hrm, there's this:

    ello.co - -- hashtag Ello https://ello.co - ddailey | ello

The last of the old-school Ello folks (Mark Gelband) seem to have left, the site is now owned by TalentHouse, a Los Angeles-based affair, and few people are saying much of anything.

    This bodes poorly IMO.

That's even worse news for the Web-based Openbook application: Not only did the Openbook developers need to rush to release the mobile version of their social network service at an accelerated rate (meaning that they are now probably sleep-deprived); now they need to start work on their Web-based version and finish it at an accelerated rate while most likely starting from a sleep-deprived state this time.

In the most likely case, either they won't make it in time, or they will be forced to release a very buggy version. That sounds like a nightmare in either case, both for them and for anyone on Google+ hoping to migrate to their service.

Incidentally, I'm the founder of a Google+ programming language community, "Haskell: The Haskell-Beginners Community" (see https://plus.google.com/communities/101629034466170191725), which currently (as of 10:26 AM, December 25, 2018 JST) has 3,354 members. Initially, I was considering migrating it to MeWe, but according to a comment in one post (for which comments have apparently now been deleted (see my link to the post where the comments have now been removed at https://plus.google.com/118298669883750766972)), MeWe apparently bans atheists; viz.:

    > +John R. Ellis

    > reality.

This means that MeWe apparently does censor unpopular posts, even if they do not violate their Terms of Service.

Now I'm in a bind as to where to migrate the members of my aforementioned community. I am considering Minds, but am concerned that if I migrate to there, I might be labelled as either a right-winger or a Libertarian, neither of which I am. However, it seems that I cannot afford to wait for Openbook, either.

Given that Facebook is not an option (I have already deleted my account there, and would not enjoy being subject to surveillance by their security team), the only other suitable options are Dreamwidth (which probably does not have enough users) and one of the federated social network services (which tend to be lacking in functionality and/or buggy in addition to lacking sufficient users).

If you had to migrate the users to a least undesirable location while minimizing loss of users, what would you do?

  11. Benjamin Russell As an interim solution, an email list, or Groups solution (e.g., Google Groups, Yahoo Groups), may be your best bet.

It's simple, accessible, and can keep your community together. It's also not sufficiently good that it's likely to become your final destination (though that might not be all bad either).

Points on crunchtime and censorship noted.

  12. A cursory glance at Deamwidth shows me they aren't even fully mobile responsive.
    I'm out.

  13. Edward Morbius my stream has not continuity to it as it used to. Your post of 5 days ago shows up as new with the one before being 16 min.

If there a settings change missed or something I can do. I realise this off topic but I can't help but think it has something to do with G+ returning itself.

Fascinating ... in my case, I do not use a smartphone (instead, I use a feature phone), and, hence, cannot open a browser on it. Therefore, I have no need for mobile functionality.

However, I do use a personal computer for all my Internet-related needs. Therefore, to me, Web-based (or, alternatively, application-based) access is essential.

Therefore, I actually have a paid subscription with Dreamwidth; however, I cannot even begin to use Openbook effectively unless Web-based access becomes available.
