The Death of Google+ Is Tearing Its Die Hard Communities Apart | Steven T. Wright

...For these Google+ enthusiasts, the process of digital relocation has become a very serious endeavor. Just ask John Lewis, the software developer who built a 3,500-member group on Google+ that’s dedicated to finding a replacement for these uprooted users, dubbed the “Mass Migration” community. A cursory scroll reveals intense discussions about what social media platform the users will flock to next, with debates that dwell on the relative strengths and weaknesses of individual platforms. Lewis and his raft of dedicated moderators have even organized Reddit-style AMAs for the CEOs of these sites to essentially pitch themselves to the skeptical community....

  1. Good filler. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

  2. Great article.. indeed, will be waiting to see where everyone goes, as I am not yet excited about any of the fediverse or federated sites thus far. 😌

  3. Sadly... this will be the last Chrismas to wish all our friends the very best. Not to mention., we will lose all the people we have had for friends for years. For me. 7 years of friends because there is no site to import our friends to. It makes me weary to start over for the fear of the same thing happening on some new site. Even though G+ is a social media platform, the friends we made over time became family. The loss is very sad. We are humans and not computers and our feelings are real. That is a fact. So to everyone. A Merry Christmas for the last time.

  4. As written in the article, the Circles are the killer feature for me. These two look very tidy and serious.

  6. I didn't realize just how much he quoted me. I mean I feel like it's just about me. Really I think the article was about him losing his pet community here. As reporters go, he was mostly accurate, had to keep it short (the interview was over an hour) and missed points I would have loved for him to give. In any case, nice exposure to the cause. Give him a clap... he needs the money.

  7. It is so easy to get caught up on the doom and gloom train complain and point fingers repeat repeat repeat

I guess there is little interest thought or energy left to brainstorm possible viable alternatives

I know because I have some and I am ready to participate and it’s like the great hinderance

are blinders that those that actually have the abilities to put an option package together are preoccupied with survival

  8. And it's a v-e-r-y skeptical community at that. If Google ditches a social network with all it's resources, what can be said of smaller startups?

There's a lot of investment of time and energy keeping your collections up and talking about interests all around G+.

Google didn't even address the G+ users until AFTER the news reports, too. We only learned about the shutdown via the news. That's HORRIBLE customer service -- especially from a data mining business.

  9. Kevyne Kicklighter Google's responsiveness through all of this has been abysmal and unforgivable IMO.

  10. Agreed. Google is very poor at customer relations. Even on the corporate side where I dealt with them on Chromebook orders for schools. Sometimes they seem completely lacking in business sense.

  11. Peter Vogel When in your main revenue generating activity the money pours in without any particular heed to encouraging it, this becomes more understandable.
