Augmented/Alternate Reality Game Developer Niantic about Google+ Shutting Down
I was reading an article about one of the leading developers in the field of Augmented/Alternate Reality Games, Niantic, known for games such as Ingress, Ingress Prime, Pokémon GO and the upcoming Harry Poter ARG Wizards Unite, about the development process of Ingress Prime, and they had the following to say about Google+ shutting down:

A challenge for us was that Ingress was originally launched inside Google around the time that Google+ was launched. We launched the game to Google beta testers, which was a pretty tight group of a few tens of thousands of people who were vetted by Google. We launched on Android only. The Ingress community naturally sprung up, originally, on Google+. It’s persisted there. If you think about Google+ as this shopping mall where everybody’s left, there’s one anchor store in the corner that still has a huge amount of activity. It’s the Ingress store.

And now the mall is closing. The realtors have decided to bring in the wrecking ball. [laughs] It’s a challenge for us to figure out how to help Ingress find that new version of–the Silph Road is obviously huge on Pokemon Go. That has to happen. We frankly acknowledge that’s something that we have to help with. It’s a challenge to help that get transplanted to a new home.

As an Ingress player, I'm interested in seeing how Niantic will try to help us find a new home.

  1. Thanks for this. Ingress brought me to G+ and I stayed as well, even though I dropped out of Ingress years ago. I still have a number of Ingress friends as mutual followers.

Ingress served it's purpose: to create community. A fantastic game, and sad G+ is failing that mission and breaking up communities. :..(

  3. Andrew Krug: I've emailing Niantic's partnerships address. Would be interested in cooperating here, if interested.

  4. Edward Morbius for what purpose? As an ingress player myself, I would be extremely disappointed if NIA decided to endorse or join up to pretty much any of the G+ alternatives that have been discussed in this group. None of them are really (IMO) suitable for a public corporate presence.

The one thing that NIA are pretty aware of is that the G+ player base seems to be reasonably unified around them NOT moving to FB as their primary SM presence, so I guess it leaves them with a bit of thinking as to what they do. (the FB domiciled player base probably think differently.. lol)

With the success of Pokemon in particular and probable replication of that with the upcoming Harry Potter game they could probably afford to buy G+ if they so wanted.. - wouldn't that put a cat amongst the pigeons...

  5. Wayne Harris They're a large organisation with a community-oriented communication problem that's not a core business interest but which might help lead to open solutions.

    Or: a potential ally.
