Google+ Alternatives - an interesting case made for the use of Hubzilla Channels to replace Collections
Channels (forums/feeds) on Hubziilla are quite powerful and most people just use a single one as their default feed. But you can create multiple ones with each one being a different theme/topic like G+ Collections.
The link below points to that specific post on Hubzilla. Also, very interesting point mentioned in the comments that another new social network called Osada was created by the developer of Hubzilla and it is a slightly simpler trimmed down version of Hubzilla (why? because Hubzilla is really packed with features, apps and add-ons).
Osada is open source and federated (but apparently excludes Diaspora/Pluspora which si very sad). Osada has native support for the ActivityPub protocol (W3C standard) as well as the more advanced but lesser known Zot6 protocol. It can inter-operate with other social networking applications and projects in either of these spaces, including Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Funkwhale, Zap, Friendica, Hubzilla, and many more. More on Osada at https://zotlabs.com/osada/.

José Pedro Paula yes Osada is very small and actually on Hubzilla you can disable q lot of the extras anyway. Yes MeWe is growing pretty fast and one of my groups passed 400 followers already.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good workaround but still isn't as convenient as Collections. To post to my other channel I'd have to switch to that channel or maybe do some tricks that I haven't learned yet. On G+ I don't even need to leave my timeline to post to Collections.
ReplyDeleteHalfey Halphstein yep even with MeWe you do have to switch to post from the Groups tab as Profile tab only posts to contacts. I'm going to pass that suggestion on as they seem quite responsive.
ReplyDeleteJosé Pedro Paula Yea that's the 'tricks' thing I mentioned in my comment above. It's going to take some time to get used to but I'm afraid it's going to put new users off. It's one of the reasons I never really into IRC back then.
ReplyDeleteHmm. It appears that !!{channel@somehub.com} works like a private message. It means if I want to post something PUBLIC in my other channel I still need to switch to that channel first. Not the best way to emulate Collections but I think I can live with it for now.
ReplyDeleteIMO after using it for almost 2 weeks now Hubzilla gave me the experience closest to using G+ if compared to diaspora and MeWe.
I'm not sure what you mean but what I did was posting from my default channel at start.hubzilla and tagged my second channel (also on start.hubzilla) with the "!!". It worked exactly as I said; it became a private message that only I can see. It's not a big deal but you know going back to the old ways isn't easy after you've get used to how Collections on G+ works.
ReplyDeleteJosé Pedro Paula Thanks I'll try it later.
