Guys, so I have a new blog, and Ive been putting it out there on Google+. I recently signed up for Mastodon, but does anybody know any OTHER social networks LIKE Google+?? :/ https://aliceblogland.blogspot.com/2018/11/whhyyy-google-i-was-advertising-my-blog.html
Lot of G+ folks are going to MeWe
ReplyDeleteDreamwidth (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamwidth) supports communities, and unlike MeWe, its profiles are searchable using a search engine. It has apparently been around since 1999, is based on the LiveJournal codebase (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamwidth), and partly because it is not so well-known, its topics seem to be focused on actual discussion, as opposed simply to memes or gathering large numbers of other users.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting aspect of this service that influenced me to decide to choose them is that they were denied service by Paypal and Google Checkout for refusing to censor content that did not violate Dreamwidth's Terms of Service, but which made Paypal and/or Google Checkout uncomfortable (see https://dw-biz.dreamwidth.org/7022.html):
> We've seen a bunch of people questioning why we don't accept
> payment via PayPal. We used to, but PayPal closed our account
> with them, after demanding that we censor our users' content to
> remove material that did not violate our Terms of Service but
> that made them uncomfortable. We refused to place restrictions
> on our users over and above the restrictions placed by US law,
> and so PayPal refused to process payments for us. (The same
> thing then happened with Google Checkout, before we found a
> payment processor that was willing to accept our business
> without placing further restrictions on user-generated content
> other than "is it legal".)

ReplyDeleteThis group has devoted a lot of energy to finding and evaluating alternatives and replacements for Google Plus. We have a spreadsheet of data. I'm not sure if Mondragon is on it, though.
ReplyDeleteIt would probably be worth your time to look at older conversations in this community, too. There has been a lot of good information shared.
Although it does seem that a huge number of G+ers are championing MeWe, you should be aware that currently MeWe content is sealed off from the rest of the web. Posts can't be shared, linked to, or bookmarked. Search engines such as Google cannot include MeWe posts in their results.
The CEO of MeWe has said that version 2 of MeWe will not have those restrictions. He mentioned 2019 as a release year. But in the meantime, MeWe remains a walled garden. For that reason, I would not recommend making it your only social media service.
By the way, what is Mondragon? I looked it up, but couldn't find anything like a social media site.
ReplyDeletePeter Maranci sorry I meant Mastodon I forgot the name
