What is our alternative?

Comments

  1. Utilize the varied sections/categories of the community to search and find the right alternative for you as there have been multiple discussions about a number of platforms that exist.

  2. You'll find a lot of people saying "MeWe". They have a strong following of dedicated people in the group right now, so don't take that as an indication of a mass agreement but rather a very focused group who are attempting to recruit.

There are a lot of options, including MeWe, and we invite you to ask questions about how you use social media if you want people to try and match you with a specific service.

  3. John Lewis No ones made me follow the crowd but do see MeWe as having potential.

  4. I would encourage people to try several different platforms, large and small, familiar and new. Spend some, get to see who is there, what the culture is like, how the UI works. Take a month, really investigate. I've noticed there are differences in the quality of interaction (Memes v. Real content, one word answers v. Discussion, Emojis v. Real encouragement). Decide which one or maybe two fit your lifestyle and moods best. You're sure to find people from Google Plus on all platforms.

  5. Hah. You see me saying MeWe also. This is because, at present, MeWe works extremely well and is a good place to jump, for now. Since we're being thrown out, we have to go somewhere. MeWe seems like the best homeless shelter, at present.

However, I am no longer going to marry any social networking platform. I'm building a completely different approach, described in the pinned post on my profile here plus.google.com - Phillip Landmeier (ᚠ)

If MeWe disappears tomorrow, I scratch it off and move on to the "next big thing".

  6. Di Cleverly Absolutely. That's what I did and I found a new home on Pluspora, too. Nice place, nice people...:D...!

    ReplyDelete
  7. What Di Cleverly said. Try several if you have the time! I think the days where we rely on one site for everything are over ... and that's a good thing.

  8. Scourge There is an app version which works quite well on Android: Diaspora Native WebApp

  9. MeWe considered harmful, unless you enjoy being a human shield and a cash cow for hate groups invited by its founder.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've yet to see any. then again I'm only in tech groups which are well moderated.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I set up a community there MeWe and I have not seen any of what Greg X. Then again there are people that go looking for trouble. It's a lot better than Facebook

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mewe, youme, friendica - the best thing to do is try different ones.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Forgive me if this is out of line for the community, but are there any fans of MeWe who are not straight and white?

"Since we're being thrown out, we have to go somewhere."

    This is false.

My approach, fwiw, is to wait and see what settles out.

Not to mention the fact that other SNs we use continue to hum along just fine (twit, etc.).

  15. Dave White Actually it's considerably worse than Facebook in this setting, because FB has terms of service that allow hate groups and users of hate speech to be reported and removed. MeWe has no such thing, by design from its founder. They don't even have a built-in reporting option for it.

The worst part of all is that, as mentioned previously, just by being there one acts as a human shield for the hate groups, as well as giving them material support (by boosting MeWe's user numbers). I find it hard to countenance the idea that this apparently doesn't make a difference to so many G+ users. 😞

  16. Pluspora has over 1/6 of all active Plussers already. If you absolutely need communities, Hubzilla supports them, and can be networked to connect with Pluspora/Diaspora users.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I won't try MeWe because it's still someone's private walled garden, subject to their whim; in that regard no different from Facebook. I want federated systems to succeed. I'll be trying Hubzilla first.

  18. Chris S "Forgive me if this is out of line for the community, but are there any fans of MeWe who are not straight and white?"

    There is this group:

    https://mewe.com/join/gayinterracial

Appear to contain 101 members that are not straight and/or not white. This was found casually by searching MeWe groups for the word "gay" and although there are groups that showed up that were clearly anti-gay, there are some that are for gay people to meet up.

    Justin Martin

As I have previously mentioned, I have withheld my support for MeWe (unlike I have for any other site), but not for the more common reason that you find (which appears to be the hate groups which have found a home there and are courted by the management when they are ejected from other social media platforms) but instead I feel MeWe's business model will cause it to fail and therefore I have recommended against joining it blindly.

That doesn't mean you should listen to me. It means you should consider all the options and opinions you hear and decide for yourself, based on the evidence you uncover.

IMHO, the time for trying several different platforms has, imho, past. It is now time to decide on one or two and really start developing them to be ready for April 2nd.

  20. I came to Google+ as part of the Open Beta.
HyperSpace Beta opened Monday - and I think cryptosocial is the best option we have until Holochain (or maybe Inrupt) gets going with regard to the digital sharecropping and losing everything that we're going through now.

  21. Scourge : You actually don't need an app for Pluspora. Open it in your browser and it works like an app.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I just downloaded the Mewe app. It seems ok, but I want to try it for awhile. What will replace Hangouts?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Greg X you're a G+ user and there are Nazis here. Does that mean you're complicit?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Chris S yes. Quite a few. Although I'd say "users" rather than "fans".

    ReplyDelete
  25. Bill Pusztai No, because here, it was possible to report them and sometimes even get them removed. G+ certainly never said anything about retaining the hate groups because of their "free speech."

I reported them whenever I ran across them. Didn't you?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Look at Greg's home page, one would get the idea he is a troll, not followers etc,

    ReplyDelete
  27. Justin Martin
Hangouts isn't going away any time soon and when it does it will be replaced on the consumer side by Hangout Chats and Meet (presently available to only G Suite accounts). This has already been announced.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Greg X I did, and nothing happened. And MeWe does have a report function (although I've never needed to use it yet so I can't speak to its efficacy).

I look at Tumblr. The nazis are getting far more numerous and more cocky since everyone who used the site for porn left - that is to say, people with an actual free speech agenda. My takeaway from that is that the more people you have on a site reporting hate speech, the less hospitable it is for the nazis. Wait n see whether that's true, I guess?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've used the reporting on MeWe on a few porn spam accounts

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dave White I still have over 10,000 circlers, thanks.

Bill Pusztai I must have reported more aggressively or something - I got a couple of communities and quite a few users removed. MeWe doesn't even have a reporting method built in for hate speech - you have to use "Other..."

The problem with "wait n see" is that MeWe's remaining founder made it clear that he will tolerate those groups there. Unless a Gab-shooter-level issue happens there, I don't see him changing that stance - and while you wait, you're joining him in protecting and supporting them, when they really should be de-platformed. When there are alternative social media networks that don't tolerate hate speech, why choose one that explicitly does?

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's interesting what happens to communication when one group isn't allowed to speak anymore ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am looking for a platform that I can share with my family and children. If MeWe is the spot, the haters can go to any of the 100's of places they allow hate speach. Somehow, Google+ was able to stay away from that, for the most part. I am ok with others opinions, but far too often they are just profainly attacking and talking tuff because they...aren't.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Justin Martin You could do worse than to look into Pluspora and Youme.social. Mostly the key is to stay away from Gab and Minds, and I've already said things about MeWe.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Scourge You don't always trust browsers, yet you'll run a pile of code someone tossed together and called an app? 😏

    ReplyDelete
  35. Scourge I don't think you actually know for certain what is in the apps you find so convenient, unless you built them yourself. You do realize that, right? If you "know how to code"? 😏
