Btw British Bob you should perhaps also make a SignalFlare post that you can pin to your profile. See my profile for an example. Definitely doesn't need to be as elaborate as mine though. (Although, since you also seem to love to ramble on at times, you might even outdo me 😂)
Julian Bond According to the info that Google published yesterday, it will be. They said the only thing that's going away is g+. See previous post by Morbius.
John Douglas Porter It's very specific though. The main way to view the AboutMe data is via your G+ Profile. And the G+ Profile is currently part of G+ and so presumably will disappear. There are other places where the same data is displayed, each one different and with it's own UI.
On top of that, some profile meta information, such as Circles, seems so tied into just Google+, that it's not likely it would survive the shutdown regardless. plus.google.com - Filip H.F. “FiXato” Slagter
A SignalFlare Post is a great idea and will be gone when G+ closes down. You could also create an account at about.me and/or wheretofind.me.about.me - about.me | your personal homepage
Julian Bond Thank you. Profiles.google.com is the right way to go. Clearly, aboutme.google.com is not meant to be a 'public' interface to your profile.

Good call, one that more people should do :)
ReplyDeleteActually, that's me included, as mine still contains a lot of old links too.

I really hope that AboutMe profile data is still publicly visible when G+ isn't.
ReplyDeleteFilip H.F. Slagter Me? Ramble? Surely not?😂 Actually I might do that if I knew what one was or how to do it.

ReplyDeleteJulian Bond Confused.......? You will be:)
ReplyDeleteJohn Douglas Porter the problem is that https://profiles.google.com/112064652966583500522 currently redirects to https://plus.google.com/112064652966583500522 and that aboutme.google.com only shows your own profile data while you are logged in, and AFAIK doesn't provide links to other people's profiles.
ReplyDeleteSo, if plus.google.com will no longer contain consumer information, then it sounds like that info will still remain affected.
On top of that, some profile meta information, such as Circles, seems so tied into just Google+, that it's not likely it would survive the shutdown regardless.

British Bob here's an example of a SignalFlare post: https://plus.google.com/112064652966583500522/posts/jfnSz1YrxWS
ReplyDeleteHere's another from Edward Morbius : https://plus.google.com/104092656004159577193/posts/MuoLbpNFZ4m
Basically a pinned (so it stays at the top of your profile) post with links to your other social media / site profiles, along with the SignalFlare hashtag so it shows up in searches

John Douglas Porter works for me
ReplyDeleteJohn Douglas Porter it depends on the question you’re asking... it takes me to MY profile.
ReplyDeleteJohn Douglas Porter No it's going to the wrong place. But plus.google.com - John Douglas Porter works as does

There's no unique profiles around https://aboutme.google.com I think they all go to one's own profile.
Afaik, there's no way of going direct to a profile and opening the aboutme data without clicking on the about link.

ReplyDeleteGarry Knight I did both. About.me is slick, but too restrictive, at least at the free tier. wheretofind.me is plenty adequate.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll have all three places (those two, and profiles.google.com) linking to each other.
John Douglas Porter I found you on about me
ReplyDeleteFilip H.F. Slagter Thank you
