For all G+ users looking for a social network in the Fediverse, I wrote a guide for that. Hopefully this helps making a better choice.

Nice article, thanks!
ReplyDelete1) The date is April 2nd, not April 2th.
2) There's an iOS app called Twispora which can log into the socialhome.network node, at least. There are quite a few nodes in its list which also contain the word 'social' but since other federations use that word, it's difficult to tell which other nodes it supports without going through the whole list (which I'm not going to do).
3) This same app can be used to log in to Diaspora*, Hubzilla, and Friendica nodes. (If only there were a similar Android app!)
4) If people are thinking of joining Diaspora*, Hubzilla, or Friendica, I recommend Friendica as being the nearest equivalent to G+ once you learn how to use it, and it federates out to Diaspora* and Hubzilla. Diaspora* is a bit simpler and has fewer features (e.g. no privacy groups, no post editing, no comment editing or liking, etc). Hubzilla is the most feature-packed and can also be used to construct websites, galleries, wikis, fan pages, etc, etc.
Real need is just of generalized endpoints to social data, and not yet another social network...
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to launching the open source social network, Openbook, maybe it's good
ReplyDeleteEric Buijs Nice. NB: some light copy-editing, especially apostrophes. s/photo's/photos/ its/it's
ReplyDeleteNice article Eric. Will likely be useful to a lot of folks still on the fence. :)
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius the apostrophe-s for plurals is likely Dutchism as in Dutch plurals of words ending in vowels, get an apostrophe. :)
Though one could argue that in the case of "photo's" it's actually a contraction of photographs. ;)
Maybe once all this is over, I should see if I can create a tool that's been kicking around in the back of my mind for several years: a way for users to easily suggest typo fixes on any text on their website. Perhaps even offer the option to users to automatically apply the suggested chances on-load via javascript (as long as the chances aren't too significant, to prevent content hijacking and spam).
Edward Morbius Thanks, my oldest son made already made multiple remarks about that but I keep forgetting it.
ReplyDeleteJ P Sousa Paula I believe that's called 'suspensive hyphenation' (or 'hanging hyphen') which is also allowed in English (and according to Wikipedia (1) even encouraged in some style guides, such as the Indiana University Styleguide), though I believe the hyphen should also be included before 'blog' then:
ReplyDeletemicro- or macro-blog
But perhaps let us not further derail this topic with grammar discussions, even though I'm partly to blame for it as I love those discussions. 😏
Feel free to tag me if you want to continue the grammar discussion in a separate topic in your own stream though!

J P Sousa Paula That's a valid English construction.

ReplyDeleteTerrific Post. Best explanation I’ve seen yet. Please keep publishing this til the bitter end for those in denial.
Bedankt voor het article!
ReplyDeleteDiaspora might be an alternative, too. I like also Hubzilla
Since, I think, you're more experienced than me, could add to your nice article HOW to make a connection among diaspora, friendica, mastodon, etc. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteL. Alexe If you want to connect with people from Diaspora and Mastodon (and possibly all other networks in the Fediverse) there are only two options Friendica and Hubzilla. They both support OStatus, ActivityPub and Diaspora procotol. Between the two I think that Friendica is easier to use but Hubzilla is much more than a social network. Word of warning Friendica and Hubzilla have more functionality than Diaspora and Mastodon but they also have a more complex UI. Some people are put off by this.
ReplyDeleteG+ has more functionality than Diaspora, but most people seem to have learned to use it. Friendica is less complex than G+.
