Preserving Circle contacts and your G+ social graph

Preserving Circle contacts and your G+ social graph
Signal Boost. Some of the mods at G+Help are looking for detail about people trying to preserve their circles, maintain contacts and use profiles after the shutdown. If these areas are important to you, please dive in.

Rupert Wood says: Do you know of people or posts directly addressing this particular issue: Preserving G+ relationships and circles contacts and disappointed in what the 'Circles' download provides. I'm trying to collect some specific and detailed feedback posted by users regarding this in the last couple of months

This is the main currently active post.

What happens to the current Circle profile data in Google Contacts? Should I import my Takeout of Circles to Contacts? How much and how little information should there be in Takeout.Circles? What other Google products use the Profile About data and do you currently use that link?

What happens to AboutMe?

Will there be a public display of Aboutme on the G+Profile URL?

Do I need to backup Takeout.Profile data?

Do I need to backup Profile Photos?

There's also a number of posts around preserving contact info from friends in communities.

  1. Is it likely that the API of the Aboutme on G+ will be removed on March 7th?
Ideally the takeout of circles would contain a link to the aboutme of people instead of the UI of the Google+ profile in case the aboutme still will be accessible after the shutdown which actually we don't know.

  3. Cristian Motoiu Interesting approach!

Christine Bichler https://developers.google.com/+/web/api/rest/latest/people is definitely going as of 7-Mar

https://developers.google.com/people/ Is staying. But it may not be able to get at all the data after 2-April, if some of it is deleted due to the G+ Shutdown.

  6. Dang! Google Contacts turned off classic display and removed all references to G+Circles on 12 Feb.

People I had previously imported from Circles are showing contact details that are gathered from their AboutMe settings including all the links. The same data but a different display to the G+ Profile. Except this is only true for some of them. I honestly don't know what the hell is going on here or why some imports from G+ show lots of data and others almost none at all.

  7. Heads up!

    Go into Google Contacts.
A G+ Profile URL (plus.google.com/$NumericId profiles.google.com/$NumericId google.com/profiles/$NumericId) in the Website field of Contacts with type Profile gathers the data from the underlying AboutMe and displays it in the UI for that Contact.

But if you import the Takeout VCF all you get is a bare link to the profile ID and no display of the data.

Take that minimal imported entry, edit it and add the profile link into the "Website" field and the AboutMe data magically appears.

This all suggests that a very small change to the Takeout G+Circles VCF files putting the profile link into a different field would make importing them into Contacts hugely more useful.

    Still digging.

  8. I've added a section on Contacts and Followers Migration to the #PlexodusWiki FAQ:

    social.antefriguserat.de - FAQ - PlexodusWiki

Keep in mind that this is my own best effort presently. Additions, subtractions, and corrections are most wholeheartedly welcomed.

  9. There's also https://contacts.google.com

That page includes G+ Circles and Profiles information, though it's not clear what if any of that will survive the demise of Google+.

  10. My Google profile predates the Plus by several years, and appears to persist on other Google services (YouTube, Calendar, Drive, etc.). Since we've been told only G+ is shutting down, I would expect those accounts to remain as is.

  11. Pat Kight The puzzle is if there will be a single display of the profile after the sunset or if each service will have their own display.
