Turning off "Google Plus" is like a confusing language in Babylon.
No "G+" isn’t only e microblog. No "G+" isn’t only web gallery. No "G+" isn’t only web chat….
We do not need more Twitters. How many people are interested in an open solution when talking about Google?
We do not need more Flickers and other paid galleries. If anyone wants a paid photo gallery, she has long ago.
No additional chat applications. There are many applications here.
People want something that integrates them all together. Something with advanced access to privacy. Something with advanced access to content.
No more "FB like" bad suggestions for friendship and group membership and site and hidden posts…..

but do they want anything?
ReplyDeleteAlex Bodnaru they do not want to pay even the slightest amount for anything. So they get what they payed for ;-0
ReplyDeleteThis post is not particularly helpful.
ReplyDeletewe joined the club for socializing, not for the perfection of the club, but for the people that socialize with us.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius. Another inconclusive whine.
ReplyDeleteJürgen Christoffel Your currency that you pay for is your data and advertising.
ReplyDeleteAlex Bodnaru And why did you chosen G+ and not a largest FB? Lot of people, the biggest club...)
ReplyDeletei came to publish some nice material my uncle is posting me. and i met people interested in this material, then i involved deeper.
ReplyDeletethere was a wonderful place, but they are closing. hopefully not because of me.
please understand, that everything has a price. if you don't pay, you don't live. i'd rather live and pay. your mileage may vary.

ReplyDeleteYes it is not a solution but a warning. Those tons of proposed Diasporas, Mastodonts, openbooks , various IM messengers etc. are also not global solutions. It only takes attention and resources from a real solution to the problem.
people have the luggage ready. they need an existent solution. it may and should modify to accomodate milions of new users and milions of terabytes of new data, but should be quite stable to do that.
ReplyDeleteMartin Prokop How is this post helpful in the immediate future?
ReplyDeleteLinda Tewes How? Do not try unnecessarily bad solutions. G + dies, but the Diasporas or Mastodonts never lived. It is globally unnecessary, it is a terrible FB, Twitter, Reddit is a better solution.
ReplyDeleteSince there really isn't anything like G+, there are only varying degrees of "acceptable substitutes". In my case it's like finding an "acceptable substitute" for my daughter: there is none. When G+ goes dark, so will I
ReplyDeleteMartin Prokop It's not just about quantity, it's about quality. Most people joined G+ because of quality - because they were fed up with the quality on Facebook. Because of that I still consider Diaspora a better replacement for G+ than FB.
ReplyDeleteIt is NOT a bad solution. And it is just as alive as we, the users, make it.
Barbara Gross Martin is just making everyone second guess themselves while pushing reddit.
ReplyDeleteG+ didn’t become what is, good or bad, overnight. I just hope wherever we land the leadership learns from G+’s successes and failures. Nothing that can be learned from is a failure.
Barbara Gross What I wrote to FB and the others was ironic.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is about us. But if the portal does not have a feature. So she does not have it and the community of users does not do anything. So unless they are the developers of that portal.
I did not find any groups, hubs, notice boards that wrote about topics that were interesting to me. So I do not see the difference between FB and Diaporas.
I'm not interested in the license under which it is. I am interested in functionality and community on the topic.
I do not have a profile on Twitter, Flicker, or Reddit. And the end of G + is no reason to create them.
Martin Prokop When G+ started, it did not have communities or groups either. It was all about circles. And still, it did not take me long to find lots of interesting people to talk to.
ReplyDeleteDiaspora is initially more about watching hashtags or the public stream in order to find people to interact with and to put into your aspects (their equivalent of circles).
Of course you won't have as many contacts immediately as you had after years in G+, that is quite normal.
To me, social networking is an interesting part of my life that I do not want to lose, so I am willing to work on building up a new existence somewhere else once G+ closes.
Your mileage may vary.
Btw, Twitter is not as bad as it is often claimed, it depends very much on who you're following. I've created a profile there when the G+ closure was initially announced, which I am using mainly to read, not post, and there is a lot of interesting content there, if you know where to look.
Barbara Gross For me, G + was about technical topics and hobbies.
ReplyDeleteI have FB for my friends and I do not share anything publicly. And friends are really friends for me. People with whom they know outside the virtual space. I am not a collector of virtual friendships.
So wait a couple of years, and maybe the replacement will appear.
Martin Prokop I think that is how Facebook was meant to be in the beginning - something for linking up with people you know offline, friends, family. I do not have such a big social circle and the friends I do have are not really interested in linking up online, so it was never for me. G+ was always more about shared interests, and that is what brought me there and made me stay, and it's what I'm looking for in other places. So far Diaspora seems to be a good start for me - of course it'll be some effort to rebuild my network, but actually quite some of my G+ contacts did make the jump into the Fediverse as well. And I'm sure I'll find new interesting contacts there too over time (I already found some). It's fun linking up with new folks, too!
ReplyDeleteBarbara Gross Yes FB was a network for college students and it worked well.
ReplyDeleteBut now, FB is too much hiding wall posts from friends.
So far, Diaspora is the best for me as far as interested people and good content, but completely unusable on iOS due to lack of a mobile app and tiny unreadable typeface on the mobile web interface. MeWe is the best for me as far as presentation and usability, but the lack of truly public posts (which are eventually coming), and the dearth of interesting folks (some, but far more uninteresting people to wade through) makes it less compelling.
ReplyDeleteHoping that Pluspora will just fix the type size problem and then all will be good!
Brian Holt Hawthorne Accessibility is critical.
ReplyDeleteLinda Tewes Yup. I found a little JavaScript bookmarklet that lets me increase the type size, but I have to run it every time I open a new page. It would all work fine if the diaspora mobile code didn’t break Apple’s accessibility settings by hard-coding type sizes. Of course, I’ve been fighting against websites that hard-code typeface, type size, window size, etc. since the beginning of the web.
ReplyDeleteBrian Holt Hawthorne Contrast between text and background is important too. As I learned from my grandfather as he gradually lost his sight.
ReplyDeleteHe actually did better in low light. Bright light created a glare. Not intuitive at all.

ReplyDeleteHello Sarah,
Google opened a nice club where milions of us enjoyed conversation and collaboration with each other. I am very thankful for this place, and happy to have met so many people and social activities.
now, that google decided to close the club, we can all go away separately, the way we came here in the first time, grumbling at Google: look how you killed our social life!
but we can go together grouped by the communities we have built here, smile at Google and thank them for helping us to build these communities.
we can find another club to sit in. it doesn't matter who runs the place, as long as they help us remain together.
we don't have to replace Google plus. we have to be grateful and keep to ourselves what we found on Google plus.
make a decision, together with your friends, where to go next, and just go there.
the people around me decided mewe, which is not open source nor run in python but it already hosts my friends, so there I go.
if all your community goes offline,
have my humble invitation:
I want you to join me on MeWe, the Next-Gen Social Network. No Ads. No Spyware. No BS: https://mewe.com/i/alexbodnaru
mewe.com - MeWe: The best chat & group app with privacy you trust.
more on Facebook
ReplyDeleteI heard yesterday that FaceBook is planning to integrate Instagram and WhatsApp with FaceBook as one thing.
