UPDATE: New "Search" Live Next Week on MeWe's iOS App

I know there are still questions going around about MeWe's iOS App - which is back in the Apple Store as of 3 days ago after a brief hiatus. Previously I wrote to you all that we were harassed by Apple two weeks ago for protecting our members by blurring NSFW pics - giving our members a warning and letting you click through the warning only if you chose to. Well strangely that "click" option violated Apple's rules and they took us out of the store.
They kept us out of the store for more than a week while they gave us bizarre BS reason after reason every time we resubmitted. So we finally wrote to Tim Cook about Apple's unfair aggressive tactics against MeWe. After all, we do exactly what Tim says the world needs - a social network that protects people's privacy and never targets them or sells their data. In a curious twist, you could also say that we're now a big player, since at the same time Apple was harassing MeWe they were also giving Facebook and Google a hard time too - albeit for different reasons.
So then a few more reviews later and we're back in the Apple Store, but if you are an iOS user you may notice that MeWe's excellent "Search" feature is temporarily missing. We removed it because the Apple Store reviewers used it relentlessly for hours and hours to uncover any content on MeWe that gave them an excuse to keep us out - they rejected us for content that would at most have been rated PG in a movie theatre, and we're listed as 17+ in their Store! So returning the favor, we shared with them some truly unsavory photos that we found on Facebook's iOS App as proof we were being unfairly targeted.
No worries, we're the good guys, doing the right thing, in this case protecting our members from unsavory content if you don't want to see it. And our TOS is clear about what is and is not permissible on MeWe! So we've taken the opportunity to make MeWe's "Smart Search" feature much better and also cleaned up our Open Group Directory, removing any TOS violators. The updated Search feature is in final testing and we expect it to be back in the Store next week - better than ever.
Right now, MeWe's awesome "Search" feature is currently available on the Android app and on Desktop as always - so please enjoy it there - and by midweek it should be back everywhere.
By the way, being out of the Apple Store for a few days didn't slow our growth down at all - earlier this week we were the #5 Trending Social Network in the Play Store - with Facebook and SNAP barely in front of us. Pretty darned impressive considering we are a team of just 30 people and millions of members changing the world!

ReplyDeleteI have now mentioned this G+ group, MeWe, and other such resources to fifteen point four million people [ G+ memberships, simple aggregate ].
Yesterday I posted to G+ Star Wars, N ~ 400K, and today I posted to G+ Jesus Christ Daily, N ~ 800K.
MeWe now supports ten languages and is therefore a global platform.
MeWe claims to be growing at a very high rate in late 2018 and early 2019.
They have now achieved critical mass.
Large numbers of G+ members and a fair number of larger G+ groups are moving to MeWe.
The group *G+ Meditation said weeks ago they were moving to Facebook, but in recent days changed course and will now migrate to MeWe.
I am no doubt a major reason why.
Apple CEO Tim Cook was of course completely humiliated in November 2016.
Looks like there is still some future for free speech, Apple, Facebook and Twitter notwithstanding.
Weakening Facebook and building an alternative social commons is critically important work.
I now see my social work as strong and strategic opposition to Facebook and techno-Sharia.

ReplyDeleteAre people not understanding what they're reading, here? Basically MeWe is gaming its search so that "objectionable" content can't be found by Apple. I've already noticed that they're also doing this for at least some terms that might be used to find content from hate groups - the same hate groups that their founder considers and protects as "free speech" as long as they're not actually doing things that are illegal.

ReplyDeleteGreg X the bizarre part is that the "objectionable" content in question is already against their terms of service. Their response, by their own standards, should be to just delete the content.

ReplyDeleteAny explanation that feels the need to remind their users "no worries, we're the good guys" generally doesn't live up to that claim. Or does no one here remember "do no evil?"
ReplyDeleteThis CEO is the biggest reason I really don't like MeWe but I sadly also don't have any valid alternative yet. This is pure spin and I am amazed so many of you fall for it. As if anyone of the like of Apple or Facebook would actually feel threatened by MeWe. Similar bull a bit earlier when the spam bots attacked alleging facebook would be the one paying the bots for the attacks. Nonsensical conspiracy theory level of spin going on.
ReplyDeleteMarcus Burggraf I would question Facebook only after Facebook offered to buy MeWe. It hasn't and won't. It's very small in comparison. Like "fly versus Goliath." It's nice to have goals, though.

ReplyDeleteAs for viable alternatives, what, exactly, are you looking for? I'm finding that Hubzilla seems to be the closest thing to a drop-in replacement for G+, but no option is a perfect solution.
In my opinion, there isn't going to be an acceptable replacement for G+ before it closes, at least, not a G+ clone that will satisfy OG plussers. I made sure my followers can find me on the major sites like FB and Twitter, I figure once G+ does shut down, a natural successor will eventually show up.

ReplyDeleteI agree and I think that was established about a month or so into investigating the options after opening this community. Sadly, there does seem to be a major split where people go. The easy route is MeWe, because it's similar and they want money so they cater to the user needs in ways that open source can't.
The harder route is to avoid private enterprises and use community software (Diaspora is the other front runner) and that requires concessions on usability. No one there is going to make money off you, so there's less incentive to cater to the usability desires... unless someone is into doing that. They are all volunteers and that's how it works (...unless someone started a fund to pay for specific improvements. Lost opportunity, I guess.)

ReplyDeleteMarcus Burggraf If you enable the Diaspora app, it should give you access to the 10k users on Pluspora. That's about 10-20% of active G+ users.

ReplyDeleteNathan V I am also on Pluspora but my specific niche seems to be rather unproductive. And people from other federated networks can't participate in Hubzilla features like groups. I keep an eye on them and Crosspost but so far it's just not a lot of action.
ReplyDeleteMarcus Burggraf in your experience does hubzilla provide more of a g+ like feel than pluspora? Most of the people i follow (table top rpgers) are active on mewe. I’ve found some on pluspora but they’re not active there.

ReplyDeletewcangel Unfortunately, joining MeWe goes directly against the concept of "don't be evil". As it apparently makes their (remaining) founder and CEO very uncomfortable to have pointed out, MeWe is according hate groups "free speech" protected status. The more people go there, the more human shields these hate groups have - and now MeWe is gaming its own search to make the hate groups harder to locate. What's "don't be evil" about that?
ReplyDeleteAlistair Langsford Hubzilla is definitely more like G+ than Pluspora. It's a lot more feature-rich.
ReplyDeleteWe moved 2 of our communities to Tapatalk, seems to be a decent alternative so far. I like that it's an established app that many of our users were already familiar with. They were very helpful in getting everything moved over.
